Just burgers isn’t enough

Anyone else almost feel they’ve forgotten how to host?

Planning bbq this weekend for friends with a toddler (we have one too)
Am planning nice burgers (bit special ones from the butcher) with salad and homemade wedges I’m thinking? What else would you include at a bbq? Starters/chips and dips, cake for dessert? I feel like it’s been sooo long and need ideas to make it special

We had a bbq at Easter with our neighbours. I did: burgers (in brioche buns, with cheese if wanted), sausages (a couple of types), beef satay kebabs, corn on the cob, cous cous and roasted veg, coleslaw (shop bought though). My neighbour brought salad, flatbreads, crisps with dip, strawberries and ice cream. We had leftovers!

It's not even a Bbq without Sausages!

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 07/04/2021 11:56

Hot dogs and some kind of marinated chicken.

Barney60 · 07/04/2021 11:57

Allgirlskidsanddogs · 07/04/2021 11:59

Dips with breadsticks and crudités, coleslaw, corn on the cob, sausages and then bananas baked with chocolate and ice cream for pud.

Barbecued pineapple rings for Hawaiian burgers.
Because it's still freezing.

MasterBeth · 07/04/2021 12:04

Pasta salad can get to fuck.

Laggartha · 07/04/2021 12:05

caramelised onion with sumac and pomegranate molasses is awesome

Pictures a year old, half bottle of tomato sauce in the fridge

Do you find life a bit tough?

dreamingbohemian · 07/04/2021 12:08

Great ideas but some seem a little OTT for having 1 couple over! I don't think you need 3 kinds of meat and 6 sides for 4 adults.

OP for a small BBQ I would just add to your plan: a few sausages; another cold side like coleslaw; dessert; and some nibbles for beforehand.

PleaseCanWePutAGrownUpInCharge · 07/04/2021 12:08

We had a BBQ on the weekend.
Crisps, crudites and dips while we were cooking.
Burgers, sausages, coleslaw, potato salad, rainbow salad - mixture of cooked/uncooked burger toppings - mushrooms, onions, cheese, bacon, avocado, tomato, lettuce, cucumber etc. Wedges would have been a good addition!
Home made (warm) brownies and vanilla ice cream for dessert.

FortunesFave · 07/04/2021 12:09

I do think you need another meat in there....sausages or chicken wings.

denverRegina · 07/04/2021 12:10

S'mores

Pasta salad and pomegranate? 😆 I agree, GTF

dreamingbohemian · 07/04/2021 12:15

I'm really curious what's wrong with pasta salad!

I do one that I think is really nice but now I'm afraid to make it when we have people over : )

We’d have 4 types of meat just for us, no guests. It’s not worth the effort of a BBQ to me otherwise.
Laytwir024 · 07/04/2021 12:18

A couple of salads and hot dogs too

Caspianberg · 07/04/2021 12:20

I think that’s fine. I would be perfectly happy to attend with just burgers and wedges as you suggested. Add a simple desert and your sorted.

stablefeet · 07/04/2021 12:20

Korkers sausages. Brilliant and cook from frozen.

Rice Corn on the cob Coleslaw Pitta's (and dips, humus & tzatziki) Definitely a cake or eton mess etc for dessert

Does anyone remember a thread for a few years ago where the op was hosting a bbq for about 8 people and thought that 4 burgers and 4 sausages were enough Grin

There were some amazing bbq suggestions in there if anyone can find it

BarbaraofSeville · 07/04/2021 12:25

We always have marinaded chicken skewers with peppers, onions and chorizo.

Then lamb ribs or chops and burgers and sausages if we have guests.

Get more food than you expect to use and freeze what you don't use or eat over next few days. We always have a selection of BBQ food in the freezer then you can have it at short notice without having to take pot luck at the supermarket/butchers with everyone else who's had the same idea.

Wedges are good because you can prep in advance, cook in the oven and leave on low to keep warm.

TheTurn0fTheScrew · 07/04/2021 12:28

kebabs, preferably seekh or something else lamby
DH and the kids usually want orzo and pesto salad and homemade coleslaw.

justasking111 · 07/04/2021 12:29

If it is four adults and toddlers. Do not go too mad. Toddlers may not like posh burgers so I would do some sausages as we did at easter. Nice crisps to munch on then burgers with coleslaw, salad. Toddlers, sausages which need to be chopped up with some pasta and a lorra ketchup. Pudding, frozen fruits defrosted and soaked in booze with posh icecream for adults. Jelly and icecream for toddlers. I have a rabbit mould for jellies just for the little ones.

Tip if you are buying coleslaw, then lob in some horseradish to beef it up, food of the gods.

Oh yeah. I forgot we can't have lots of people. D'oh!

Next year.......

I have made skewers with chicken, chorizo, onion and peppers. I have also cooked salmon in foil. Very large mushrooms that have cheese and chilli on the flat side.

I really like bananas cooked in foil in their skins and then have them with ice cream.
