Just seen this on the BBC news website.
www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-56647128
It’s the first time I’ve ever seen anyone in motoring speak out publicly against suvs. I pray this is the start of a major backlash and rightly so! Before anyone says..”you’re jealous” as I usually see on these threads, I would just like to say-I could afford one myself but I wouldn’t be seen dead in one!
Also I am only talking about city suvs. In the countryside/farming it’s of course a different matter.

OP posts:
DamsonTrousers · 07/04/2021 16:08

I could afford one but wouldn’t buy one. Impractical to park, more expensive to run. Prefer something more compact and “nippy”.

NobodyPuttsBabyinCorner · 07/04/2021 16:11

You haven't seen abuse for men driving big or sporty cars?..... Never heard of small dick syndrome or his car's a penis extension? It's the oldest put down going.

EdwardTeach · 07/04/2021 16:15

In the UK most "SUV"s are just tall hatchbacks. A real SUV, e.g. the Ford Explorer, is a much bigger and heavier vehicle built around a light truck chassis.

howrudeforme · 07/04/2021 16:16

I wouldn’t afford one.

But I’m a single parent to one child.

Loads in my posh 🤣🤣 working class part of southend and the owners struggle to manoeuvre / park them. It’s a status symbol here.

Annoy · 07/04/2021 16:25

I have an unfashionable berlingo and it seems to tick all the practical boxes that people are giving for reasons to own an SUV

Yes. I am always at awe at the US SUVs. Like do they nee driving license for abus to drive that?😂

Many SUVs in UK are very much the width and lenghts of sedan. Just taller, yes.

Annoy · 07/04/2021 16:27

@RickiTarr

Just thinking maybe hatred of SUVs linked to a bit of internalised misogyny, which we may all be guilty of at some stage? There's intense dislike for those selfish, polluting "yummy mummies" driving SUVs at school pickup - but haven't seen any for men driving sports cars,. A man picking up their kids in a porsche, taking up room would most likely just get admiring glances

You’re joking? Not the case in my circles. Not by a long chalk.

Flashy car = over compensating for being shit in bed/having a tiny dick. I am never impressed by a flashy car.
WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 07/04/2021 16:53

We have a Sharan (basically a big taxi)

That's what we've got our eye on - seems to tick all the boxes for carrying lots of people, lots of stuff or a mixture (or a small van if only two seats in use) and solid for towing.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 07/04/2021 16:58

Considering apparently the size of SUVs is a problem.

The Berlingo mentioned above (no wonder it ticks the boxes 😁)
4,403-4,753 mm L x 2,107 mm W x 1,844-1,849 mm H
Qashqai
4,394 mm L x 1,806 mm W x 1,590-1,595 mm H

And it doesn't make big difference on emissions either.

WhipperSnapperSteve · 07/04/2021 17:01

I had to get an SUV due to the reduced amount of estate cars available and an SUV (Renault Kadjar) was the only vehicle to comfortably fit a mobility wheelchair and normal wheelchair.

Tossblanket · 07/04/2021 17:03

Due to the utter shit general standard of driving on the roads. I'm not surprised people want as much metal around them as possible.

EvilPea · 07/04/2021 17:22
@evilpea think think last time I looked I quite liked the yeti, plus it has a humorous name.

We all tune out the reversing horror but it's quite funny if you have someone new in the car.

Somehow it had never occurred to me to have it mended or switched off.
It might be a fairly simple fix. They work in a circuit so one slight knock will cause them all to appear to fail. You might be lucky get a replacement off eBay and work your way down them swapping it with the new one until you find the offending one.

Or it’s a wiring problem and they are all fucked.

Or just sell it and get a new car

tf23 · 07/04/2021 17:22

I have a Range Rover Sport. It's a beautiful car but spends much of its time in the garage as it has endless things that go wrong. It is embarrassingly wide - I try to be considerate by slowing down on narrow roads so my wheels are pretty much touching the kerb - I still get lots of angry gesticulations from other drivers to move over (I am, I promise!). Where possible, I park it at the far end of car parks so I'm not squashing the car next to me. It does make me slightly paranoid due to the wrath of other drivers (appreciate they may have a point due to its size).

My next car will be a SUV as I find it easier to get in and out (minor mobility problems). But it will be smaller and electric. And definitely not anything made by Land Rover, never again.

wonkylegs · 07/04/2021 17:30

@ConnieCaterpillar70

It's not SUV's that are the problem.

It's that a large majority of the driving population can't park to save their lives. It needs to be a much bigger part of the driving test IMO.

Doesn't matter if they're driving a Q8 or a Smartcar if they can't park the bloody thing.

Yes yes to this also so many people don't know the size of their car and either try to squeeze through too small spaces or in my village not realise that they could easily pass each other without holding up all the traffic. Small car drivers just as bad as big car drivers.
coogee · 07/04/2021 17:31

Yes. I am always at awe at the US SUV

I drive a US SUV.

It is more akin to a small lorry than a scaled up car.

I really wnat to sit in it once🙈 Is it also big from inside? Some "suvs" here have small car space inside. Also. Is gas in the US free😂😂😂 So many questions

Oh right then! That makes it the best decision for everyone else. OP doesn't like it, no one else should. It's an order!

mygenericusername · 07/04/2021 17:44

Exactly @Tossblanket. We live on a track that is sometimes used as a shortcut by lazy knobs. When they come hurtling towards me at 50 miles an hour on the barely double lane gravel, down the middle of the road because they don’t want to scratch their PCP Yaris, I take great comfort in knowing that they’ll get more hurt than me if they don’t pay attention.

It wasn’t the case for one poor sole who was looking at his phone rather than paying attention to the road. He didn’t know we had stopped to let horses turn and went straight into my tow bar. Not a scratch on my car, his was written off and the police were very interested in what he was doing to be so oblivious.

Why on earth would you endanger your life in a small car where there are so many twats on the road.

FatCatThinCat · 07/04/2021 17:45

I hate the things. DH brought one home for me to test drive when we were looking for a new car last year. Awful thing to drive as I felt like a five year old, barely managing to peer over the steering wheel/dashboard. I was like a walrus on a beach trying to get in and out of it. DH is 6ft4, he loved getting into it, but I needed a safety rope and climbing gear. Thankfully he saw sense and we got a regular old estate car instead.

Osirus · 07/04/2021 17:46

@peak2021

Sadly I don't think it will be other than a one or two day story.

If it were me I would call an SUV a large vehicle for driving licence purposes and if you want to drive one, take your driving test in one. The thought of having to take your driving test again or have a normal sized car I expect would reduce the number of SUVs on the road.

I DID take my driving test in my SUV (Land Rover) and passed it. I did think the examiner might think I was a bit nuts, but he didn’t even mention it.

He probably enjoyed the drive; it’s a lovely car!

emmylousings · 07/04/2021 17:46

They are terrible in terms of environmental impact, and that makes it everyone's business. Also, rarely mentioned, but people drive them partly because they know they would come off better in an accident with a normal car, so there is an underlying "fuck you, me and my family are more important than you and yours"element to them. And they take up a disproportionate amount of road / parking space. Other than all that, I'm sure SUV drivers are lovely, thoughtful, self-aware people.

Keepithidden · 07/04/2021 17:49

It's an arms race, cars get bigger so people can see better/feel safer as well as being a status symbol. The problem is, as everyone else gets bigger cars, so yours ends up smaller and less safe, so you need to get a bigger car ... all good news for our consumer based society!

poppycat10 · 07/04/2021 17:52

only from other men.

And when a car goes past in the street with a moronic noisy exhaust, women look disgusted, only men look impressed.

TristantheTyrannosaurus · 07/04/2021 17:53

@mygenericusername

This again. I’m sure there are millions of things you do that I would disagree with. You have to accept that people have varying levels of guilt about these types of things. Additionally, They are necessary here in the countryside. Where do you stop the condemnation of people that own them? Must they live on a steep slope where it snows 6 months of the year?

Companies like Land Rover are never going to go away so the emphasis needs to be put on developing vehicles with less emissions rather than stopping people from driving them in the first place. I wouldn’t be seen dead in a city car. I would however gladly spend the money to buy a high end vehicle that had taken significant steps to reducing emissions.

I agree. Sick of other people who can't mind their own business.

My small car got 5 stars in the NCAP tests.

Anyway I would not have to worry so much about safety if the SUV and Audi drivers remembered that having £££ for cars (or car loans) doesn't mean they are more entitled to be on the roads than the rest of us.
