To ask if you can freeze Tilda rice?

Advic3Pl3as3 · 06/04/2021 19:33

I use the Tilda rice pouches but a pouch is two portions and I end up eating the whole pouch instead of the correct portion size. I am trying to be better with portion size but don’t really want to waste food so can I cook the pouch and then freeze half for the week after? Or is that going to kill me?

I only eat rice once a week with chilli so I wouldn’t have it the next day.

Uncle bens do smaller pouches. Don't take risks with rice.

Bramblebutter · 06/04/2021 19:35

Rice is a funny one, easy to spoil. just buy a bag of rice a cook one portion. Save you money, save the environment plastic

LooseThreads · 06/04/2021 19:36

This is not what you asked but we have naan bread or chapatti with chilli.

Nohomemadecandles · 06/04/2021 19:37

I wouldn't have thought so. It's already booked when you buy it so you're reheating it. Freezing it would mean you're on the second reheat when you want it again. Especially with rice. I would cook normal rice and save a lot of money!

LooseThreads · 06/04/2021 19:37

Then you could just defrost one.

idontlikealdi · 06/04/2021 19:45

You can buy frozen rice in single serve portions

BarbaraofSeville · 06/04/2021 19:57

Or buy a microwave rice steamer and cook one portion.

Or make egg fried rice the next day.

Or freeze the rice. Despite what the rice police say, the risk is so low it's not worth worrying about. I've eaten reheated rice on average twice a week for about 30 years and it's never caused an issue.

I think if it was freshly cook rice I would agree, but when it's already cooked, cooked and packaged, then heated it's a bit risky to then freeze it and reheat.

MasterBeth · 06/04/2021 19:59

Just cook some rice. It’s easy and takes about 15 minutes in total. You can cook it in a pan or the microwave.

bookworm1632 · 06/04/2021 20:01

I used to have the same issue.

Now I'll batch cook rice - 10 portions at a time in my steamer - after cooking straight in freezer spread out on a tray. If you've an old freezer you can put it in the fridge first so you don't heat up your freezer, but a modern one should handle it fine.

After it hardens, about 1h, remove tray, divide the rice into portions and bag them, squeeze the air out the bags and freeze.

When you want it, 2 mins in the microwave and it's as fluffy as freshly cooked.

NB there is NO health risk whatsoever to doing this - refrigerated rice shouldn't be eaten after a couple of days, but freezing completely stops the harmful bacteria from growing.

Twickerhun · 06/04/2021 20:01

It’s not going to kill you but rice badly treated can make you feel really crap. Buy a big bag and cook a small portion.

dementedpixie · 06/04/2021 20:05

You get rice trays that are split into 2 sections that you can heat separately

CMOTDibbler · 06/04/2021 20:07

I batch cook rice and freeze it. As long as you cool it quickly (spread it out on a baking tray and fan until its not super hot, then bag, seal and flatten then put in the fridge spread out, then freeze as soon as its cold) its perfectly safe

dementedpixie · 06/04/2021 20:09

These

SchrodingersImmigrant · 06/04/2021 20:11

Is it the microwave one? I wouldn't.

I do freeze freshly cooked one though. If you hadle it right (meaning fast ha) it's safe.

SchrodingersImmigrant · 06/04/2021 20:13

This took longer to post than to cook a microwave rice ffs.

If you wnat portion control you can cook rice, quickly chill it, QUICKLY, and then portion it into freezer. I do that because it is physically impossible for me to cook less than 4 portions😂 Hence the fat

Nohomemadecandles · 06/04/2021 20:13

But she'd be reheating it twice because it comes pre-cooked in the packet. It's not about reheating rice in general. I'd listen to the rice police on this occasion. Any food reheated twice has risks.
FOJN · 06/04/2021 20:18

If you're looking for convenience without waste or worry about food poisoning then cous cous with your chilli might be worth considering. Pour boiling water on it, stir, cover, ready to eat in 5 minutes.

Nohomemadecandles · 06/04/2021 20:33

Thats a good shout!

Or buy the supermarket own brand. You can chuck half and still save the money (but not the planet.)

Royalbloo · 06/04/2021 20:43

Or you could, erm....buy rice you can weigh??? Sorry if that's unhelpful but it's true!

Palavah · 06/04/2021 20:48

Cooking 1 portion can be fiddly.

Open the packet, put half into a bowl to meekrowahvay, and put the rest in a ziplock bag or airtight container and store in fridge till you are ready to nuke it.

BambooWhoosh · 06/04/2021 20:56

I often use just half a pouch of Tilda rice. I tip half out into a dish ready to microwave and put the open bag in the freezer (I fold the top over and hold with a clip).
