Is this normal for a job interview?

This happened pre-covid. A local woman advertised for someone to do admin for her lettings inventory business. I called her and she said she'd only had one other reply who was unsuitable. She came round to my house for more than two hours showing me what to do. She said she'd send me a sample at 5pm that night so I could give it a go, and that I'd start properly on Monday. I kept giving her lots of room to give me the slip if she didn't like me but she said 5+ times that I had the job and that I'd start on Monday. She asked me tons of personal questions, including what my mother died of Hmm She randomly mentioned that her stepdaughter was a compulsive liar, which struck me as odd. She boasted a fair bit saying she'd made enough to buy her house by herself, that her brother worked for Capita; she had a Range Rover, flash clothes and all that shite. She made fun of my small business saying, "I don't actually know what you do all day for your business" and laughed. Last thing she said as she (finally) left was, "I'll email you at five and then we'll get you started on Monday." She kept saying throughout, "Please just be completely honest with me and say if it's not for you." I found her a little weird but was up for the challenge (and money...).

The email never came at five which did worry me but I'm not the pushy type so I left it. Next morning I had an email in a totally different, cold tone saying, "I just wanted to let you know that when I got home, I had a couple more enquiries with regards the typist vacancy, so what I have decided to do is go and speak to those people too. I will then make a final decision as to who I feel would be the best person to work with me. I will keep you posted."

Surprise, surprise, I never heard from her again!

Within the same week I saw her business was listed on Companies House as 'Application to strike the company off the register', dated one week before she placed the job ad. Two months later the business was dissolved. I now know she never owned her house as I can see from her FB she lives elsewhere now yet her house has never been sold as per Zoopla!

Anyway, is it normal nowadays for someone to promise you a job, then ghost you? I still wonder what the whole thing was about sometimes, why she wasted 2hours+ of my time and why she wouldn't even let me have a go at that sample? Gah.

How weird op!
Sounds like she might be a bit of a con woman ? All very strange.
I would thank my lucky stars I didn't get the job I think ! She sounds a bit unhinged.

You’re quite the detective! Grin I hope your own business is as a Miss Marple-type PI.

It sounds like she was either in denial or a raging fantasist, and she was rude to you to make herself feel better.

Dear Lord, I think you've really dodged a bullet there!

Thank you, yes I did feel she had a bit of the air of a conwoman about her! You're right, it was a lucky escape...imagine doing a month's work for her and then she ghosted me without paying Blush

Haha I just googled her name and the info was right there!

Phew I'm glad you think that as I blamed myself for messing it up for ages.
