to think Aldi would sell more if their trollies were bigger?

I have just had to miss out on some garage shelving and a rug because I couldn’t get them in the trolley alongside my weekly shop. If they had bigger trollies the nation would have better access to really useful things.

Eh?

Totallyworthit · 06/04/2021 11:33

I would just put the stuff in the car then go back in, even freezer stuff would be ok for the time that would take.

HollysBush · 06/04/2021 11:34

I agree!

Tankflybosswalkjam · 06/04/2021 11:34

@Totallyworthit then you’d have to do the checkout again, which is always pretty stressful!

Aloethere · 06/04/2021 11:35

I think most people would go back if they really wanted them? Besides there is only so much room to navigate around the shop, massive trolleys taking up space when you are just trying to grab a few things would be a pain in the arse.

Tankflybosswalkjam · 06/04/2021 11:36

Well yes and there’s the flaw. By the time you get back to the car and then go back in, the need for a welding mask and an anvil might have faded.

OP posts:
NurseButtercup · 06/04/2021 11:36

Erm no, if you really wanted the rug & shelves you could have bought them first, put them in the car and then gone back in to do your weekly shop.

ghostyslovesheets · 06/04/2021 11:36

yes just go back - our Aldi has self checkouts for small purchases

Tankflybosswalkjam · 06/04/2021 11:39

What they need (and I’ve given this some thought) are the bigger ones you get in Homebase and similar. A wide flat basket on the top and a kind of heavy duty flat bed bit underneath.

OP posts:
Same4Walls · 06/04/2021 11:39

Doesn't that logic apply to trollies at all shops?? I mean I also couldn't fit a 40 inch tv in my trolley at Tesco's alongside my weekly shop or a water butt in with my weekly Morrisons shop but that doesn't mean their trollies need to be bigger. Confused

Tankflybosswalkjam · 06/04/2021 11:42

@Same4Walls I don’t think it does, because Aldi’s middle aisle is unpredictable. With Tesco and others if you want a telly then you’ve gone there for a telly. But Aldi has stuff you didn’t know you needed.

OP posts:
Emeraldshamrock · 06/04/2021 11:45

I have never took notice of the size of the trolley. I would imagine most grocery trolleys wouldn't fit heavy extras with food.

Longdistance · 06/04/2021 11:51

Well, it’s not a bigger trolley that’s required, a redesign would be better. The bottom part of the trolley could hold bulkier items. Lidl has a pull down bit on their larger trolleys.

littlepattilou · 06/04/2021 11:52

@Tankflybosswalkjam

Eh? Confused

This thread is as weird as the one where the poster was complaining that she couldn't get any Easter eggs, on the afternoon of the day before GOOD FRIDAY.

Batshit. As has been said, just get your (small-ish) trolley full of food/groceries, back to your car, and take the trolley back in to the store for the other stuff. Yeah, so you have to go back through the checkouts, but so what? If you want the item(s) enough, then surely you'd just go back in.

FWIW, even a bigger trolley probably wouldn't have fit a set of garage shelving in it anyway, (and especially not along with all of the other shopping.)

Tankflybosswalkjam · 06/04/2021 11:54

@Longdistance and others, maybe you’re right, it needs reconsidering. Personally I like Costco trollies. Or the ones they used to have in Makro. They are trollies of intention.

OP posts:
DiptyqueandDiamonds · 06/04/2021 11:56

No.
I already find a full trolley of groceries in Aldi almost fills the length of the conveyor belt already. I’m usually still loading up the conveyor when they’ve started scanning - and then the running and sweating and panicking starts whilst I split myself in two trying to stop my purple sprouting broccoli hitting the floor...
Bigger trolleys = higher risk of bruised veg

rainbowthoughts · 06/04/2021 11:56

They don't have a rule that you can only buy what you can for in a trolley though, so you could have gone back or asked for help.

Tankflybosswalkjam · 06/04/2021 11:59

@DiptyqueandDiamonds hmm I know what you mean. The tills are stressful. I have a method though, which one day I will patent and market to the nation, for how to pack efficiently and with speed but at the moment it needs some tweaking.

OP posts:
Erictheavocado · 06/04/2021 11:59

Order online. The Aldi app notifies you of the upcoming specialbuys and most can be ordered online. They are usually dispatched the day they go on sale in-store. They also often have online only items.
It's bad enough getting rammed by the flatbed trolleys in Costco which has huge aisles, let alone in Aldi with it's much narrower ones with no space to avoid them.

saffire · 06/04/2021 12:01

Aldi's have small trolleys and big trolleys. The small ones are the most popular as they never have any left.

Ooh I look forward to hearing it when perfected @Tankflybosswalkjam !

I very nearly have it - a combination of open bags in trolley, stacking multiple items on top of one another on the belt to slow down the scanner and hanging an extra bag off the back of the trolley.

I find if I start to panic before 2/3 items are scanned, then I’m sunk, and those tins of tuna are landing in the bag allocated for baked goods.

YouJustDoYou · 06/04/2021 12:03

I do the food shop, take the food to the car....then pop back for the large item.

dingit · 06/04/2021 12:05

There's a space/ shelf under the trolley. It's where I put my kayak Grin
Although I agree, I pack into my trolley and it's tight fitting 4 bags inside, and we are a small family.

This is true. And it's the same in all of the other supermarkets. All the small trollies go first.

Not sure why, but for us, it's because we 'split' our stores. We do around 40% in Morrisons, 20% in Aldi, 20% in Asda, 10% in Iceland, and 10% in Lidl. So we never, ever need a big trolley.

All the stores are within 1.5 miles of one another by the way! We don't drive around miles and miles to 5 different stores. They are all fairly close to one another.
