AIBU to be worried about flying post pandemic?

Not sure if I am being ott, but surely there will be pilots and cabin crew who haven't flown in over a year being put back in the saddle which might cause issues?

I am sure some airlines will be diligent in making sure pilots have kept up their flight hours during lockdown as best they can, but many I assume won't have and this could be a recipe for disaster. (would be interesting to hear from those in this industry maybe what measures are in place for this)

My fears may somewhat coincide with binging aircrash investigation during lockdown but still... Hmm

I'm sure they'll make sure their training is up to date before they fly

Are there many commercial pilots who haven’t flown in over a year? I know that there have been less flights, but flights have never been fully stopped during the pandemic.

I’d fly the bloody plane myself if it meant escaping from this godforsaken place. I’ll certainly take my chances with a trained pilot.

ThePlacesYouWillGo123 · 06/04/2021 10:25

My husband is an airline pilot (long haul). Yes there have been less flights, but all pilots have been able to fly to stay within recency or offered a simulator session to stay within recency, and keep training up to date. The cost for a pilot to go out of recency is too high for airlines.

AWamBamBoom · 06/04/2021 10:28

Id heard they had to keep flying to keep their air space open and to keep up their hours
I'm taking the chance either way

I wouldn't have any concerns about the pilot being rusty or the plane not being maintained properly.

I do have serious concerns about being stuck in close proximity for several hours with a bunch of strangers from different countries with recycled air circulating around the cabin.

If you are more concerned about a crash than Covid, your worries are focusing on the wrong thing.

Air filtration systems are much better than anywhere else. Pilots have been flying in simulators or planes still.

Propagandalf · 06/04/2021 10:48

You're more likely to die getting to the airport than dying onboard a plane.

YABU ffs lol

Perhaps you shouldn’t fly until you’ve been vaccinated or feel more comfortable then.

I’m not remotely concerned either way, although I am vastly more likely to survive Covid than a plane crash!
