Has anyone got any information about current travel to and from Australia?

I am living in Oz but from UK. A relative in UK is very unwell. I'm wondering how realistic it might be to go over to the UK if the worst should happen. :( I have googled and it's very confusing. I have heard about Aussies being stuck in UK for months due to lack of flights and caps on arrivals in Oz. I live in South Australia and when I just tried an experiment to book an imaginary flight back to Oz from Manchester it was all "No flights" on whatever date I picked.

Then there's quarantine...14 days I believe? At both ends? Anyone got any insights please....I'm feeling very worried and a bit upset.
@PomPomtheGreat that’s so sad, I’m so sorry for your loss. There are so many awfully sad stories of loss for us stuck here. When I moved here 14 years ago I always consoled myself that if someone got sick we could be back basically the next day. Now the thought of never seeing someone again is just so terrible.
Thank you. That's very kind. She knew the diagnosis was coming just over a year ago but refused to attend the appointment after her scan to hear it as she was coming to us for the whole of last November and didn't want to spoil her holiday. I admired her guts to be able to do that, and thankfully we had a wonderful month.

She was 86 and in a wheelchair but we got to the Blue Mountains (her lifelong dream) and down the coast. She left the day the smoke first arrived in the ACT and a couple of months before Covid, so we all counted ourselves as very lucky. It was difficult when the restrictions hit, knowing they might not be lifted in time, but I suppose that's what you face when you live abroad for whatever reason.

My mother died ten years ago in the UK and we were able to borrow enough for the airfare for me to go and say goodbye or attend the funeral, but not both. I'm not sure I'll ever quite come to terms with saying that final goodbye and then having to get on a plane and fly around the world away from her, but I had a three year old and several older children, and you do what you need to.

Many people all around the world have had it far worse, and at least we haven't had any kind of lockdown where I live, after the first four weeks while schools and shops and cafes etc were assessing the situation.
