To ask how much your 'proper' hot tub cost?

huttubhun · 04/04/2021 14:56

We're thinking about getting a hot tub as were unlikely to go on holiday this year. Not a lazy spa inflatable type- a 'proper' one.

We have a con crest based but would need an outdoor power supply, the hot tub etc. We're not sure if we should go wood fired instead...

If you have one what was the initial cost and how much does it cost to run?

TIA

(Named changed as my neighbour is a MN'er and would not be impressed with our 'sex pond' Grin)

I'm not sure what constitutes a proper sex pond, but you can pay an absolute fortune for them, apparently.

I think it's the pumps and filters (to remove the floating scum of filth) that costs the most, ergo if you want one that doesn't have you bathing in a murky soup of bodily secretions and general dirt, it will cost many thousands.

silentlight · 04/04/2021 15:08

We have a proper one, it was 8k (but that was 8 years ago) and a bit cheaper than normal due to being a model that was being discontinued. It’s a jacuzzi one, we tried lots of brands but the jets were best on the jacuzzi. It’s not that expensive to run, about £10 a month on electricity and prob £250 a year on chemicals, filters and a new UV bulb.

I know they are not popular here on mumsnet, but we have the best family chats in the hot tub.

Wood fired means you need to plan ahead, electric means it’s always ready.

Sitting in it on a snowy day, a warm starry evening or a crisp morning are all lovely ways to relax.

Kenworthington · 04/04/2021 15:14

We are about to have a swimspa delivered- it’s an elongated hot tub (19 ft) you can also swim in and it’s £32k BlushShock it’s a monumental frivolity. I can’t wait!

CheerfulBunny · 04/04/2021 15:26

My ex was a landscape gardener so got one from a job he was doing for next to nothing as they were getting rid. We loved it, it was lovely to relax in of an evening with a drink. I don't think it costs loads as long as you have a really decent cover for insulation. If I understand correctly it works a bit like a kettle with an element etc. Maintenance can be a bit of a pain with all the chemicals to keep the water clear and clean but not leave you stinking of chlorine. Make sure you get clean as if you go in with deodorant and things on it can make the water cloudy and bubbly!

A sex pool! Our neighbour definitely wouldn't approve but sounds amazing!

I think this would be us. I would use it at least three evenings a week and most weekends.

Our budget is around £7k all in which sounds feasible I think.

We spent 3.5k on an 8 seater from a supplier on eBay and had it delivered and fitted for £150 we've had it 5 years and use it all the time.

I'd say approx 50 a month on electric and chemicals if you keep it up-to temperature, we need to buy a new lid and have replaced the controller once the fuse box blew, that was about £350.

But there is literally zero difference between a 3k Or a 6k hot tub other than the margins the "hot tub" companies mark up.

So look at what you like and buy online would be my advice you'll save about 2-3k

wandawombat · 04/04/2021 15:54

I would love a swim spa. 🙂

BJHair · 04/04/2021 16:03

I’ve had 3 😂 part exchange and upgrade them like cars from the same company
First one was 4K
Second 6k
3rd 9k
We did this over a period of 4 -5 years
Factor in cost for a crane if you have no access - won’t get in the garden that will cost around a min of £500
Couple of hundred for new electrics if necessary .

We have an outside plug and we needed a new fuse box - hot tub has it's own fuse in the fuse box and this is advisable .
Monthly cost is around £10 -£20 a month for electric and chemicals .
The one we have now has it’s own little bar and tv and we have that rigged up with a converter so whatever is on in the house we can watch in the tub - it’s also got speakers and USB ports so we can play music off our phones
It’s an 8 seater with two loungers
Personally though the 6 seater that we had was much more powerful
My dog hates it 😂
It’s actually not that loud and none of our neighbours have ever moaned about any noise
If you get it from a shop they will come and do a site survey to see if your ground is suitable to take the weight and be able to advise you about electrics and stuff

CoffeeBeansGalore · 04/04/2021 16:11

Costco sells them if you or someone you know is a member. They start at £6k which includes delivery & installation but apparently you have to supply the electric cable & plug.

£10?!?!? So cheap, how?

£50?!?!? Why does the other poster pay £10 lol
WhatsTheEffingPoint · 30/10/2021 21:55

£6k ours is a Catalina Spa
They aren't too much bother to look after, we check ours with the dip strips a couple of times a week and then add the necessary chemicals. You can bulk buy the Chlorine and PH Balancers and they last quite a while.
There is something quite nice about sitting in it in cold weather, plus having back and knee problems the jets soothe it nicely.

houseonthehill · 30/10/2021 22:37

What will it cost? Your dignity.

jgjgjgjgjg · 30/10/2021 22:40

Ours (Serenity 5000) cost £6k a couple of years ago. Plus crane cost. No maintenance issues yet but a yearly service costing about £400 is recommended. Plus obviously chemical costs and electricity costs.

Cherrysoup · 30/10/2021 22:55

£5k years ago. The wiring is buried and goes to the conservatory so no outdoor electrical needed, just a decent wire. It’s very clean, the water is regularly changed. I wouldn’t dream of having sex in there, no bodily fluids!

solvendie · 30/10/2021 22:55

We got ours 4 years ago. £4K and £30 per month to run. It’s a 6 seater. It’s got a balboa system. Filters changed every 2 month (approx £20) chlorine is cheap. Just make sure you don go in it with swim suits washed in detergent , body cream, make up etc.

PeoplePleaserBe · 30/10/2021 22:58

We went for a Capitolo by Caldera which is ergonomic due to my spinal issues as it has a sligjtly higher step inside the tub so isn’t as steep a drop inside. Cost about £9k. We purposely went for one that gives warm water when the jets are on so it’s not a shock - to get this you need a 32 amp, not a 16.

Service pack was £400 on top which included the installation company coming out at 3months to drain, refill & get the level of chemicals right plus provide everything else needed for the initial 12 mths.

Landscaping needed which cost about £2k.

Electricity is now slightly more at £2 a day.

Steps are extra & I plan to buy some waterproof playing cards soon!
