To be really worried about DS 13 height

Laughingstock91 · 01/04/2021 21:29

DS 13 hasn’t really grown in over a year. All his mates are now considerably taller than him and he’s getting really upset about it especially as they are all constantly telling him how short he is.

I am assuming he is due a spurt- he’s only just 13 and hasn’t hit puberty yet so still looks like a little kid. I looked at the WHO growth chart & his predicted height is about 5’10/ 5’11 ish but at the moment he’s still tiny.

Aibu to worry? I think it’s the constant comments that are getting to him. He just doesn’t seem to be growing at all.

DS is also just 13 & a relative shrimp. Not quite hit 5' yet. How tall is your lad? We ran into his best buddy from primary school the other day. About 5'6" and DEEP voice. Was funny moment.

I'm not worried for many reasons. This a very diverse age physicially.

yeOldeTrout · 01/04/2021 21:34

ps: middle DS was smaller than most his friends at about age 14-14.5; now taller than most of them (age nearly 17). His feet are huge (11 or 12?). I don't think he's done growing at all.

Laughingstock91 · 01/04/2021 21:35

Don’t think DS has hit 5’ yet actually - he’s really small. I keep reassuring him and I don’t think it would bother him so much if his mates weren’t going on and on about it

My DS had a tough time at secondary because of late puberty.I was really worried and even sought medical advice -there was nothing wrong, thankfully.

During sixth form, he caught up and is now taller than many who once towered above him. He is now 19 and I think he has stopped growing, but only v recently.

WorraLiberty · 01/04/2021 21:35

I left school at 16 and a lot of the boys who were the same height as me then, were towering above me 2 years later.

legalseagull · 01/04/2021 21:35

I wouldn't worry at all. I know year 9's that are 13 and tiny and others that are tall. By year 11 they've usually evened out

Champagneandmonstermunch · 01/04/2021 21:36

How tall is he? I think this is an age where some of them have shot up, and others aren't there yet. I have a small 13 year old too, I'm hoping he will grow eventually.

Foxglovesandprimroses · 01/04/2021 21:36

And the lad who gave my DS a lot of grief and was 5 foot 5 at age 11 is still the same height as a young adult.

Ohdoleavemealone · 01/04/2021 21:36

I remember a kid in year 8/9 being tiny. His bag was half his size. By yr 12/13 he was huge!

Give him time!

AuntyMabelandPippin · 01/04/2021 21:36

One of my DS was small when he was 15. He went away (to sea) when he was 16 and came back a foot taller.

He grew till he was 20 and ended up being 6' tall.

Laughingstock91 · 01/04/2021 21:39

I had to plot the Height graph parent predictor thing earlier to try and reassure him! He’s so upset bless him!

All your messages are reassuring me though xx

Boys have a growth spurt when they hit puberty, girls have theirs before.

I shouldn't worry, he'll have his spurt soon.

Honestly, the difference between boys at school is amazing. You can have yr8's who look like young men, whilst others are dinky and are definitely still boys.

He'll soon shoot up once he hits puberty.

GiveIrelandBackToTheIrish · 01/04/2021 21:41

It's completely normal tell the lad not to worry bless his heart won't be long only a couple of years xx

Notabs · 01/04/2021 21:44

Year 8 is the craziest year for heights, I was 5’7 and seemed like a giant compared to all the boys who were basically up to my chin 🤣🤣 completely normal OP! X

catmumandhumanmum · 01/04/2021 21:44

I remember being at school and a lot of boys that age still looked short and boyish, they are only just beginning puberty, by 15/16 they look more manly and tall.

UthredofBattenberg · 01/04/2021 21:46

My understanding is that through puberty boys have a major growth spurt sometime in their teenage years, after this they stop growing. Some have it early teens, others have it late teens.

Obviously a lot of it is genetics, but all the taller blokes I know had their major growth spurt late on. They grow bit by bit through their teenage years and have that big burst late, so they have a bit more height overall.

yeOldeTrout · 01/04/2021 21:46

You can't control other people but can find strategies to deflect what they say. Like "I am plotting what revenge to wreak upon you when I'm bigger than you" or other jokes.

SpongeCakeAddict · 01/04/2021 21:47

My brother was exceptionally short until he turned 17 and he's now six foot. I don't knowing it's because as a child he took asthma inhalers and steroids. But he hit 17 and suddenly was tall.

Crockof · 01/04/2021 21:48

Agree ,this is a weird age. Some who were giants at year 6 now fade into the background, the kid who is tiny in year 9 is the tallest in year 10. I really feel for boys in this age group, some are boys and some are men but it all evens out as planned.

LookAChicken · 01/04/2021 21:49

Look into your own family history on this as it may reassure you.

Mummaofboys93 · 01/04/2021 21:51

I wouldn't worry too much about this. My brother was one of the last out of his friends to go through puberty.. I come from a relatively tall family, everyone is above 5'10 & my mum & dad just cutting 6ft.. We thought me & my brother broke the trend as I ended up just under 5'3 & my brother was probably about 5ft until he was maybe 16? Then out of nowhere shot up & is now one if the tallest. They all now laugh at me for my height compared to theirs, especially my brother as he spent so many years shorter than his big sister & now he is giant next to me 😂

Ericaequites · 01/04/2021 21:51

Give him some time. My brother was under 5’ at that age, and 5’9” at 19. At 13, I looked 10 ; at 18, I looked 14 at just 5’. Tallness is not an important quality in life.

SillyBub · 01/04/2021 21:53

My DS is 13. He's the eldest of his friends (October birthday) and he's tiny compared to them. Some are almost, if not, 6' already.

He's not quite 5' and whilst it does bother him (especially as his sister, just turned 11, is taller then him) he does understand that for boys their growth can happen over years.

He's got tall parents and tall grandparents so he's likely to be around the 6ft mark, he's just not got going yet.

He's still sweet and angelic looking and sounding, no hair and no smell. I can still ruffle his hair when he comes in for a cuddle and I'm going to enjoy every moment whilst I still can.

LakieLady · 01/04/2021 21:55

Boys grow at really random rates imo. I knew someone who was only 5'3" at 18, but grew another 4" between 21 and 25. My mate's son was the opposite, a bloody giant at 13 but stopped growing at 17.

I'm sure he'll catch up OP. You'll look round one day and there'll be an enormous teen looming over you.

Inthemuckheap · 01/04/2021 21:56

DH was the smallest in his class at the age of 13. He grew loads around 16 and by the age of 17 he reached 6'4"!
