to convert the en-suite to a walk-in wardrobe?

I've grown to hate our en-suite and would much prefer to have some extra storage and a lovely walk-in wardrobe instead. It's windowless, right by our bed and I really don't like or want or need it! But these days everyone seems to want bathrooms in their bedrooms and I don't particularly want to do something that will make the house harder to sell when it comes to it.

For info, the house has 4 beds (officially 5 but it's a tiny box room), a loo on the ground floor, a family bathroom with bath and over-bath shower serving two bedrooms on the first floor and another bathroom with a large walk-in shower on the second floor, plus our en-suite.

Most of the time it's only dh and I. DD uses the 1st floor bathroom when she's back from uni, as do guests when they stay overnight. I really can't see what would be lost from converting it but I've got a nagging doubt that an en-suite is just 'expected' in a master bedroom these days!

Hmm, I wouldn't worry too much about an ensuite as such and think conversion to walk in wardrobe sounds great, but wonder how this would affect the sale price if you were to leave. Is it possible to convert the small box bedroom into a second bathroom?

Overdueanamechange · 01/04/2021 20:35

Ignore me, just reread and seen you already have a second bathroom. Convert away. Its your home and its first purpose is to work for you.

CovidCorvid · 01/04/2021 20:36

I hate en suites. We don’t have one and if I did I wouldn’t want to use it. So definitely change it into a wardrobe. I’m a big believer you should make changes to your home which suit you.

The plumbing could be left there I guess so easily converted back if you sold it and the next people wanted an en suite?

Coulddowithanap · 01/04/2021 20:37

Absolutely agree, if you don't need the ensuite then convert it to a walk in wardrobe, makes your home better for you.

AmandaHoldensLips · 01/04/2021 20:38

Turn the box room (5th bedroom) into the walk-in wardrobe. Mirror the back of the door. Your en-suite won't be big enough for a walk-in, but the box room will work a treat.

Oly4 · 01/04/2021 20:39

I’d only buy a master with an en suite.
But are you even planning to sell? If you have that many rooms and nobody there can’t you put your wall in wardrobe in a smaller room? But your choice

OwlBasket · 01/04/2021 20:39

Yes, convert it but have the essential plumbing left and boxed in. Best of both worlds.

MzHz · 01/04/2021 20:40

We did this, we took a bedroom off the main bedroom and made it into a bathroom for us and a separate shower room for the next room

The dingy tiny windowless en-suite is now our wardrobe! It looks amazing and our bathroom is a real sanctuary

greatauntfanny · 01/04/2021 20:41

I know someone who did this and her partner came in drunk one night and weed all over her handbags

Oinkypig · 01/04/2021 20:42

I would never buy a house with an en suite (or any bathroom) that was windowless

Oinkypig · 01/04/2021 20:42

So I would say convert!

thebillyotea · 01/04/2021 20:42

How long are you planning on living there?

I would, I hate en-suite and more storage sounds ideal.

As far as I am concerned, en-suite only have their place in guests rooms/ You might as well enjoy the house you live in!

Meme69 · 01/04/2021 20:44

I'd never buy a house without an ensuite. I have bladder issues though, so it is a necessity for me. My old house had a bathroom on the different floor to the bedroom and I hated it, I swore never to buy anywhere without an ensuite.

That said, it's your house and it should suit you. No idea why you don't use the box room as a wardrobe though

Maroon85 · 01/04/2021 20:45

We are looking to move and the amount of 4 bed houses that have 3 full bathrooms but nowhere to put your clothes is ridiculous!

Definitely do it. I can't see that the price difference between 2.5 and 3.5 bathrooms would be much, but a walk in wardrobe would I think make it more saleable.

binthebathroom · 01/04/2021 20:48

The box room is on the first floor and our bedroom is on the 2nd, so converting that wouldn't work, and anyway I wfh so it makes a great little office space for me which I don't want to lose.

As long as there was 2 bathrooms it wouldn't bother me. I'd happily convert our en suite to a walk in wardrobe!!

Iremembertheelderlykoreanlady · 01/04/2021 20:53

Our ensuite is basically a dark cupboard with plumbing. So I would happily get rid. Not for a walk in wardrobe though, just knock through to make a bigger bedroom.

However it would reduce the house value by quite a bit so it's staying.

If I was 100% sure I was never going to move and didn't care about equity left for children I'd knock through and think fuck it

Womencanlift · 01/04/2021 20:55

To me en suite’s are pretty disgusting and would never buy a house with one. A walk in wardrobe is much more appealing and I would love to find that if I was looking for a house

Iremembertheelderlykoreanlady · 01/04/2021 20:55

Just a random quote but from the first few results on Google seems to be a theme...

Ensuite bathrooms are becoming more sought after by homeowners and home searchers alike, and rumour has it they can now increase the value of your house by up to 5%.

burritofan · 01/04/2021 20:56

I’m team anti-en suite and factor the price of knocking one out and making good to get rid of the horrible things into house buying.

SaveWaterDrinkGin · 01/04/2021 20:59

I vote convert. I think en suites are grim, especially a windowless one. Sounds like you have plenty of bathroom set up already. It’s your home, you’re not talking about doing anything wild so set it up how you want to live.

FrankWelker · 01/04/2021 21:00

We had exactly your situation with additional bathrooms elsewhere. I can’t stand bathrooms with no windows so we got rid of the en-suite bathroom and got a walk in wardrobe. Best decision!

Dontforgetyourbrolly · 01/04/2021 21:02

Definitely make it your wardrobe
You have more toilets than you need already! How exciting it will be great!

Why do you hate them and why wouldn't you use one if you had one. That's super weird. They are just bathrooms. Mines fabulous. Enormous and luxurious. Why would anyone not 'like' it? It's like not liking a wardrobe or a door
Disfordarkchocolate · 01/04/2021 21:07

I'm not a fan, especially so close to the bedroom. I'd love a walk in wardrobe.
