Hi all,

I just want to know what people's opinions are, or if any of you have had similar experiences before, and if I have a leg to stand on.
So when I moved in to the flat I rent, there was a huge 9kg machine here, I was surprised but glad too, that even though it wouldn't be needed for many large items that it would be handy at times, the problem was it was in a state, the drum was wrecked, not surprised going by previous tenants etc. Anyway the agent had sent an engineer to take a look, he said he couldn't do anything and would tell them to order me a new one, I didn't think when the agent called to tell me he was ordering one, to ask what size he would be getting. Anyway it turns up and it was a 6kg 🤦‍♀️ it is compact like slim line, which is not an issue as it probably made more sense to the agent to get that because of where it sits. But I can not fit double bedding in it, this is wrong, I've never seen anything less than a 7kg at least in all the years I rented. A 6kg is too small for double sized things, and he knew full well they supplied a double bed!
I have asked about changing it, agent said they don't usually supply washing machines 🤦‍♀️ that's bull sorry.
So I'm now left having to take things down the launderette.
Do you think I have a right to argue that it is unfair to go from there being a 9kg to a 6kg, and that I can't fit things in it which you would usually wash at home? Thanks.

I think you can argue it's not a like for like and it's an impractical exchange, compared to what was on your inventory. Be firm but fair.

We private rent and when our oven blew last Christmas our landlord let us pick out our own replacement via their preferred local supplier, but I realise that we are very lucky in that aspect.

I don't have an inventory. Yes I think it's bad to have done that. And now I can't wash so many of my things, making it very impractical to live here. I don't see why I should now be forced to suffer it or buy my own.

Are you trying to fit a duvet in there? The covers should fit?

PurpleFlower1983 · 02/04/2021 07:27

It depends what it says in your inventory/contract. It sounds like you don’t have an inventory so I don’t think you will get anywhere to be honest.

HollyBollyBooBoo · 02/04/2021 07:30

You can absolutely fit a double duvet cover in a 6kg washing machine! My king size cover fits fine.

BikeRunSki · 02/04/2021 07:32

Eh? We had a 6kg washing machine for about 15 years until last year, and king size bedclothes fitted fine! The actual duvet doesn’t need washing very often. I’ve literally never had an issue with a 6kg machine. What do you need to wash?

sanfranfibber · 02/04/2021 07:34

Double bedding absolutely fits in a machine that size!

But if you don't have an inventory you've got much bigger issues!

MrsKipling16 · 02/04/2021 07:38

I think what some PP are missing here is the description that it is compact like slimline - I had this exact issue and it didn’t fit a double duvet cover (note cover, not duvet!!)

OP, I do think you should mention it and like RedRuby’s suggestion of arguing it’s not like for like.

Actually, it goes in her favour if there is no inventory as there is no record of what is and isn't there nor what the condition of the property. This is not good for the landlord.
sanfranfibber · 02/04/2021 07:45

True but it sort of suggests her tenancy isn't going to be well run.

purplemunkey · 02/04/2021 07:45

When a fridge broke in a rental we had years ago, our landlord replaced it with the cheapest she could get. It was tiny in comparison.

We told her it wasn’t ok, that she had to replace like for like - same size, similar brand quality. She wasn’t happy but she did it.

She was cheap about everything so we were used to having to follow her up on stuff like this.

Jarstastic · 02/04/2021 07:52

Which washing machine brand/model is it?

I have a shallow depth Indesit 6kg in a flat and I wash a double duvet set in it fine.
(The king bed I have to split into two washes: duvet cover in one, sheet and pillowcases in the other).

Double mattress protector had to squeeze it in, it did not fit properly, so not washed it well and couldn't get the water to spin out enough, lack of space, it's plastic backed too. Throw from bed could not fit in either. I used to wash the previous one I had in my old house and that went in very tight and that was a 7kg drum!

Yeah one item or two at a time, if you've got thick sheets etc, you can't fill it up to the brim you know lol, it does not wash properly and could damage the machine.

Why without sounding stupid, because I know what you mean, is there bigger problems if I don't have an inventory? The agents work with the council, they don't take a deposit etc, it's just the way the set up is.

Thankyou! I knew someone would read and get what I was saying, it is a slimline machine, you could fill up the drum with one duvet cover! Who wants to do loads of washing costing more and more too. I have brought it up with the agent and he said we don't usually supply washing machines 🤔 so why was there one here when I moved in, and why did the agent send an engineer to repair it, who told him he couldn't repair it and they would need to replace it, why did he go and replace it if they don't supply machines?! I have pictures of what was there at the start. I was thinking of suggesting I give him what he paid for this which is in perfect condition as only a few months old, and he can give it to another home, and they pay the difference for one of the ones I have seen, which is the same make, bigger drum and better functions etc, and not much more than he will of paid for this ridiculous machine 🤦‍♀️

In what way? I ask out of actual interest to be aware of things that I might be missing.

I'm surprised you can't fit your bedding in. My king size duvet, bedsheet and pillow cases fit in a 6KG machine.

And a mattress protector by itself should fit in a 6KG machine?

Cocomarine · 02/04/2021 16:21

I don’t think there’s anything wrong with asking... but I agree with him that rentals very often don’t come with white goods. As you don’t have an inventory, he may just have sorted that out more as an off-contract favour. Is it in your contract about white goods?

If not, you could ask him to take it away, and buy/rent your own - if you think the housing is secure for long term? (might be as he works with the council and you give the impression he has other tenants?)

Otherwise, I’d use the laundrette once a fortnight for big items. The 6kg is big enough for regular washing.

Ditch the throw so you’re not paying to wash that - unless it goes in the same laundrette load so no extra cost. If you need it for warmth, tuck it inside the duvet so it stays cleaner. Though if it’s on top of a duvet anyway, you don’t need to wash it weekly.

ChangedName4TheSakeOfIt · 02/04/2021 16:31

Get on FB and pick up a cheap second hand one. Depending on area you can get a fully working one for £25! (Or free if you're quick) then ask the agents to remove the useless one they supplied. Either that or buy a nice shiny new one and take it to your next home when you go

Redruby2020 · 02/04/2021 21:20

Right lol, as another poster kindly helped me by pointing out, this is not a normal sized 6kg it is a slim line compact one, i can't see how you could think that a king size duvet could fit 🤦‍♀️ I wouldn't get it in this drum, I've had to do one item at a time otherwise it fills it up, because of the drum being so narrow, you are filling it upwards, where as when I have used a nice generous sized 8kg machine, you are filling it and it's literally just filling the base of the drum, even generous amounts.

It states online even, that a 6kg is for a single duvet, and a 7kg upwards for a double. I have no issue with not washing a duvet in the machine at home, even in my last rental we always took it to the launderette or for a service wash.

OP posts:
HollyBollyBooBoo · 03/04/2021 08:25

6kg is 6kg in a regular or compact/slimline washing machine. The drum is the same, the space saving comes from taking off depth at the back of the casing of the drum.

Doesn't help your problem but might help you in an argument with your LL. sounds like you need a bigger drum that 6kg.

RizzleRazzle · 03/04/2021 08:32

My bad,I meant to say duvet cover, not duvet 😁 don't think I'd try and fit the actual duvet in there!

I was thinking wow what do they have in their 6kg drum that I don't ha ha.
