Car seats ( not just a booster) for tall 7 year old?
Frickssake · 31/03/2021 21:33
My DC is too big for their Recaro car seat. However, ideally I'd like them to still have more protection than a booster seat. Can anyone tell me if there's anything besides just a booster seat I can get? ( Posted here for traffic )

My son is still comfortable in his Cybex Pallas aged nearly nine. However, since he's been using it as a group 3 seat, without the impact cushion, it is a high-backed booster seat (it's essentially identical to the Cybex Solution X).
I think the Britax Romer is a high backed booster, and the Kiddy Pro Guardian works in the same way as the Cybex. I'm not sure about the Diono.
So the question is, what did you mean by needing more than "just a booster seat"? I didn't think booster cushions (as opposed to the high-backed booster seats) were even allowed to be sold any more!

You need to be careful if your child is tall for their age that a car seat booster doesn’t have the seatbelt sitting up too high. It is why the regulations say: Children must normally use a child car seat until they're 12 years old or 135 centimetres tall, whichever comes first.

135 cm is a minimum and most children in most cars will be better off staying in a booster seat for a while after that..you can get them that go up to 160 cm. There is a 5 step test to check if a child still needs a booster.
Booster cushions are legal as long as the child is 120 cm and 22 kg.

.
Did you mean a high backed booster as opposed to "just a booster"
The car seat we have is supposed to be "up to age 12". Seat has-been/ is fab and offers great protection - read some horror stories about booster seats and concerned they have no protection at all in eg. A side impact collision

I think what you're describing as booster seats are the booster cushions, OP, which offer less protection as you know. The ones with side protection for this age group are also known as (high-backed) booster seats afaik. They do have side impact protection and look like carseats, but use the car seatbelts as opposed to having their own belts to fasten in the baby/child. They're still called boosters though (high-backed boosters), or at least they were when I last bought them, a few years ago now.

Just to add, the booster cushions are also known as backless booster seats. So basically there are two types of booster seat, but it's the high-backed ones you're interested in, I think.
Sorry if you know this all this already, I just got the feeling people were talking at cross- purposes upthread.

I'm 46 and can't pass the 5 stage test. I'm not sure it's legal to drive sitting in a booster seat.
It actually makes buying a car tricky because I sit so far forward the B piller obscures a lot of visibility.

I think sometimes there's a bit of an obsession with keeping tall kids in car seats beyond when they actually fit. Maybe go to a car seat centre and check some as you don't want the seatbelt too low or the head protection to be in the wrong position around the neck.
Some children are too tall to fit any car seat well before they are 12 and that's fine - cars themselves are tested for safety in crashes for people tall enough to wear just a seat belt.
