To think that this merits an exclusion

A student in my child's class today (Y8 in a comprehensive, if that's important) called the teacher a c*nt and swore at them because they'd used the behaviour policy.

Apparently the student has been given a day's isolation in school. I'm surprised - would you think this would merit an exclusion?

Just a day, should be a week

When I was at school in the 90s it was the teachers who chucked "fuck" and "cunt" around the place with abandon. (Well, the kids did too of course.) So I don't think it merits exclusion unless it is part of a pattern of abusive behaviour.

Why exclusion as a punishment? Misbehave and get time off school?
Would it not be better to have detention instead? Misbehave and stay at school even longer. A Saturday morning detention cleaning blackboards, litter picking and washing windows would be a real punishment
