I want to whinge about it anyway.

My lovely neighbours moved out a few weeks ago and whoever has bought their flat has employed a very loud team of builders who have blocked half the parking in the street with their vans, have spent most of the day yelling at each other with all the doors and windows open so the noise is echoing up into my flat and obviously the noise of the actual work. They've got "site safety" signage blocking the landing and funnily enough there's no sign at all of the people who actually own the flat.

If it needs done, it needs done, I know but I'm mentally and physically knackered atm with work, and it looks like it'll be going on for a good while, just in time for my long-anticipated week of annual leave.

This always fucking happens - the last lot on the other side used to have bloody band practice twice a week - both fell on my days off.

You're right in that YABU because you can't stop the work but I totally get the frustration. We've had quite a few extensions around our area and although I've never complained to the neighbours, the noise, dust and blocked roads really bugged me. Thankfully they all tend to start in spring so it's several months of hell followed by several months of peace. Our immediate next door neighbours offered to pay for our windows to be washed when theirs was finished which was fab and made me glad I didn't moan at them.

I’m totally ignoring the point of the thread, but when did “needs gone” and “needs done”, become a thing?

Sorry OP.

FuckyouCovid21 · 31/03/2021 15:21

But you now what she means right?

Sorry my arse

Language develops and moves on. HTH.

I didn't say "needs gone". Needs done just means that the work the builders are doing has to be completed. I hope that helps.

FYI there is a whole section on mumsnet dedicated to picking faults in language and grammar - it's called 'Pedants Corner' if you want to check it out.

Sorry OP Yes, you bloody well should be.

Maybe do a search for the terms and you will see that you are being extremely rude.

Whereabouts do you come from? Can we pick apart your dialect too?

Argh can we get this deleted for lack of bloody relevance to the AIBU?!

So sick of SPAG pedants. They need gone.

stackemhigh · 31/03/2021 15:41

OP, are they following rules (i.e. no noise before 8am etc, cleaning up etc)?

emilyfrost · 31/03/2021 16:14

It doesn’t really matter whether or not the work needs doing, the fact of the matter is that they want it doing and they’re perfectly entitled to have it done.

2bazookas · 31/03/2021 16:29

IME, reputable builders have strict rules about employees behaviour, to limit disruption and mess to neighbouring properties. Record some evidence on your phone and contact the company manager to complain.

Snorlaxx · 31/03/2021 18:15

I really don't think they are breaking any rules or being unprofessional - it's certainly not anything bad enough to warrant an official complaint, I'm just fucked off that my peace is being disturbed and wanted a whinge about it Angry

Alright, blimey. I was only asking as I’ve never come across it before until very recently on here. English is my second language and I’m still learning, not trying to be a pedant or critiquing anyone’s SPaG. I thought I was only asking a question.

I just thought I’d ask as it didn’t seem like a particularly serious thread as the OP said they knew they were probably being a bit unreasonable as people are entitled to get builders in, and builders are entitled to work between certain hours.

Nevermind.

Sorry about the noise, OP.

MMMarmite · 31/03/2021 22:54

Ah sorry @Onairjunkie Flowers

There is a sad history in the UK of discrimination against people with regional accents. For a long time, you needed to speak "the Queen's English" for certain prestigious jobs, such as being a newsreader on the BBC - if you were upper class and southern then it matched your natural dialect; if you were highly educated you would be taught to speak that way; everyone else was excluded.

There's still mockery and subtle discrimination now, that's why people react so strongly.

Snorlaxx · 01/04/2021 18:58

Apologies Onair I was admittedly a bit crabbit and may have got the tone of your post wrong.

I am Scottish so it may well be a regional thing, I've never really thought about it.
Builders are still here but thankfully fewer of them today and a bit quieter!
