Should I have got a payrise?

Hello,

I was on maternity from November 2019 to October 2020, so I took 11 months.

During this time, everyone on my team who were on permanent contracts received a pay rise but I did not. I have been there for 7 years.

When having a look online, it says that if the entire team did then those on maternity should also but I'm not sure. Should I contact HR about this just to ask? I definitley did not get a pay rise, I have only just found out the whole team did because one of my work colleagues joked to me earlier that they were hoping to edge over 25k this year and I said oh you've not got there yet. They said no, last years pay rise was decent but not quite.

Is it because I took 11 months? I am really not sure where I stand on this. Any advice would be great!

Thanks

Can I just ask as well, does anyone know whom in a company is responsible for pay rises? Does my direct manager handle it at all or is it at a more senior level?

That will be specific to your company. There are no universal rules.

Yes speak to HR

It will depend on your company, where I work (massive company) it is all standardised whereas my friend's line manager decides on pay rises & bonuses

Anything in your Contract of Employment about specifics of timeframes regarding payrises?

Regularsizedrudy · 01/04/2021 23:24

You need to find out what the pay rise was actually for, cost of living increase? A change in the company pay scale? Etc etc. If it’s not linked to performance it does sound like you should have got it. Speak to HR ASAP.

Yes you should! See gov website, ACAS, maternity action etc.
I had 2 maternity's back to back pretty much and took a year each time and I had all my yearly bonus and pay rises paid to me as normal.

Should I have got a payrise?

I have since emailed both HR and my immediate manager yesterday morning asking essentially if they could give some clarity on why I had not been included in the pay rise that the whole team benefited from.

I'm not sure if they are looking into it or if it's a oops! moment but they have not replied yet, either one of them.

I think I definitely should of had it, I have been advised by someone who used to work for the company in HR that if I would of got it had I been in the office, I should of got it on maternity. Our payrises are based on how well the company has done as a whole, not on an individual level. It's annoyed me that no one has even responded to say they are looking into it but obviously I'm not going to let it drop. Thanks for the advice on here, appreciate it!

Hi,

Sorry more advice needed if anyone can!

So my manager is looking into it apparently but has said that although I should of been included in salary reviews it doesn't necessarily mean I should of got a pay rise.

Is this correct? I cannot see how it is fair when everyone else on permanent contracts, of both senior and lower ranks all got pay rises but I didn't. I'm not sure what could be given as a reason, apart from the fact I was on maternity. I would of absolutely been included had I been in the office.

If it is an across the board pay rise then you should get it. And as PP said it is worth reading about Alabaster which relates to payrises in maternity. www.cipp.org.uk/resources/news/the-basics-of-smp.html
