To worry myself sick about not working again?

In my fifties and got made redundant last year. Been 6 months now and not a flicker of an interview.
I have gone for all kinds. CV is great according to my friend who specialises in that sort of thing. Just the problem more than anything is so many people are going for the same job. I can't even really blame my age as my DD is her 20's is also still looking and got made redundant before me. And another female relative in her 30's been looking for over a year and has chronic health issues which certainly does not help matters.
It feels like everyone is starting to get back into employment and back on their feet and I just feel really anxious tonight.

My best friend and sister are similar - aged 50 and 48.

My sister has had interviews, there's stuff out there.

My theory is that a lot of well off people are going to retire early...just my theory.

I hope you find something soon. Flowers

Are you overqualified for the jobs your applying for?

I was briefly unemployed a few years ago and in spite of being suitable I didn’t get a single interview.

In frustration I applied for 3 jobs I thought I didn’t have a chance at and got interviews for all three.

I now always overshoot and it’s been generally successful.

I just feel very anxious as like I say, everyone seems to be getting back on their feet.
I am not massively qualified but worked all my life and got good references. I have applied for all types of work. It just feels so demoralising.

I would contact the last few companies you've applied to and ask if they could help you out by giving you any feedback on your application. Say you were disappointed not to make it to interview and would like to improve any future applications. It could be just that there were so many applicants but they may pick up on something you could improve. Good luck! X

Any chance agencies could be helpful? I have found them good over the years. It gives you an advantage if someone can say "i met this person and think they're cool".

I look at the number of people applying for each role and it is crazy.
I will try that idea though PP, thanks x

What is your line of work?

MrsFin · 30/03/2021 23:31

What's your field OP? What kind of job are you looking for?

I know you said "all kinds", but what's your thing?

LeftHandDown · 30/03/2021 23:44

Don't give up. I was made redundant just before lockdown and have only recently started working again. It is demoralising not getting interviews, or being told you did well at interview, 'they liked you, but....' It doesn't exactly give you anything to build on. But something will hopefully come along soon.

I did wonder if my age was going against me, but 2 of the women I work with are newish to the company and also 50+.

Are loads of people applying for the jobs you're going for? I'd heard loads of people were going for each job etc, but I know some of the jobs I went for there weren't many applicants and I'd guess that sometimes I'd been contacted by recruiters as a candidate filler.
