To ask do you have a "job" or a "career"?

Had this conversation with my cousin. I was complaining about work and how stressed I was this week and she said that "it's only a job" to which I said well it's my career, I love it and I want to move forward etc etc. She said that to her work is just a job...not a career. She works for money each month and that is it.

So it got me thinking? Do you have a "job" or a "career" or is it both to you?

A job.I work as a midday supervisor in a primary.I love it as its close to home and only couple hours a day.As much as I like the kids and my colleagues it will aways be just a job.

starbrightstarlight8888 · 30/03/2021 21:06

I have a career. I'm currently studying to gain more qualifications to move up the ladder.

orangejuicer · 30/03/2021 21:06

I have a career that I'm proud of.

NotAPanda · 30/03/2021 21:06

I’d always thought that ‘job’ refereed to a specific role, and ‘career’ was a broader term that covered your whole working life and expertise in a field.
For example you ‘build your career’ by having various job roles.

SimonJT · 30/03/2021 21:06

I have two careers.

One is fun and enjoyable, the other is very boring but pays the bills.

Aurorie11 · 30/03/2021 21:07

Used to have a career, took redundancy and now have a job. I leave work at work when I finish now, saw a FB post earlier from someone I used to manage about the stressful day she had today, don't miss that one bit

Lostlemuria · 30/03/2021 21:08

I used to have a career but I gave it up and now have a job. A ‘mom job’ but it was the best choice for me and our family.

Meowandthen · 30/03/2021 21:08

Very much a career. You can’t do what I do without a lot of qualifications and experience.

SomewhereInbetween1 · 30/03/2021 21:10

A job 😊 head of the marketing department but I have zero desire to move on and up to a different company or role. I think that a lack of desire to move forward makes it a job for me rather than a career.

OrangeBananaFish · 30/03/2021 21:10

A job. I've lost all motivation and enthusiasm to work hard for a career. As long as I can pay my bills and have a little bit left for fun stuff I'm happy. I'm not interesting in studying or promotion. I'd rather earn enough with as little stress as I can TBH.

WobbliHead3000 · 30/03/2021 21:11

I have a career and am really proud of it and my prospects. I think it comes down to what you value... for some they are happy with a paycheque and/or minimal stress but others are willing to be put out for long term gain in a specific field.
Nothing wrong with either.

PopcornAndWine · 30/03/2021 21:12

Definitely a career for me. I have only realised over the last 2-3 years or so how ambitious I actually am.

LucieStar · 30/03/2021 21:12

@Meowandthen

Very much a career. You can’t do what I do without a lot of qualifications and experience.

This. I've worked my way up the ladder for the best part of 15 years and been to university 3 times to be qualified for my career.

DynamoKev · 30/03/2021 21:13

Job.

hemhem · 30/03/2021 21:15

Career. Multiple jobs in thr same field, all with the same end goal in mind. Its been very stressful at times but after nearly 20 years I have something I'm proud of and my end goal is still my goal that motivates me. I'd be letting myself down if I gave that all up now after so long and so much hard work!

Okbussitout · 30/03/2021 21:17

I have a career. I have a masters which I paid for myself and did part time while working in a supermarket. It was very hard. I didn't see my partner much while doing it. It then took me ages to get a job. As I couldn't really work for free as is pretty much needed. So I've done loads to get where I am. I'm still not well paid and fixed term contracts are the way it is in the cultural sector.

Yes it is just work and I wouldn't make myself ill for it. But I've done so much to succeed it does matter.

Equally I have friend who have just a job and I understand this approach too. So absolutely no judgement from me. Success for me isn't about money and your job.

sbhydrogen · 30/03/2021 21:19

I have a career, which is massively preferable to having just a job (at least for me)

ColdandFrosty1 · 30/03/2021 21:21

At the moment just a job but it will form part of my career when I've done more training Smile

MadMadMadamMim · 30/03/2021 21:22

I have a career. It took a lot of qualifications and I've done it for over 30 years. It's progressed as far as I wanted to go and it's something I've enjoyed. It's more than a job to me because I get career satisfaction from it as well as just money.

To me, a job is where you only do it for the pay and switch off immediately you leave work.

nokidshere · 30/03/2021 21:24

I had a career which I loved, I now have a job that I equally love but I'm also nearing retirement and looking forward to having neither.

HelpMeh · 30/03/2021 21:26

Definitely a job. I hate working and derive no sense of self worth from it but it gets me out of the house. Wish I had more money though Grin.

The things I'd enjoy doing only really exist in a voluntary capacity.

Lizzie523 · 30/03/2021 21:27

Following!

greengrey · 30/03/2021 21:27

Job. I love it but there's absolutely no progression.

3CCC · 30/03/2021 21:30

A job but it has a small promotion but it's more like a career mini step ladder

Maverickess · 30/03/2021 21:30

I have a job by most people's standards, in care. I have, and am working towards more qualifications, but they are not at university and my job isn't one that anyone would consider a career I don't think.
I do it because I can't afford not to do something, but I do this job because I like it, what it lacks in pay and status it makes up for in job satisfaction.
This type of job is often called a vocation I think rather than a job or career.
I'd see a job as something you do, not that passionate about (doesn't mean you aren't good at it) to earn money. A career as something you study and train for highly like being a vet or an engineer, because you have a passion and interest in the field, and a vocation is somewhere in the middle, with some qualities of both.
