I will go first...first job after leaving school..thought you paid tax then at end of year got it all back! I thought it was some kind of loan to the government 😳 heard mam and dad mention getting '-tax-back' over the years and thought that was what happened!

That my dad knew every horse rider in the country. Whenever we went past horses in the car he slowed down, so the riders put their hand up to say thanks but I thought they were waving hi to my dad lol

That you only had sex if you wanted a baby - I was most perplexed when we were taught about contraception at school 😂

taintedtrees · 30/03/2021 09:26

That the issues feminists would be concerned about in the 1980s would have moved on a bit since then but no, sexism is still rife.

Tigerchips · 30/03/2021 09:27

Well, Strasbourg is on the border of Germany and the language spoken is German so it's not that wild or stupid that people might think it's German really.

HappydaysArehere · 30/03/2021 09:28

I trusted people thinking they thought as I did. Big shock later.

MirandaWest · 30/03/2021 09:29

Strasbourg used to be in Germany until after the 1st World War I think.

whiteshark · 30/03/2021 09:33

@CoffeeandCakeEqualsLove

"Pay-per-view" was "paper view"...thought you were buying a picture book version of the film/etc
Me too. I was late 20s when it finally clicked !!
RLJ1905 · 30/03/2021 09:33

That when moving house, you literally moved your house.

That the moon followed me (cause I always thought it looked like it 😆)

FuriousCheekyFucker · 30/03/2021 09:39

Those of you who think Strasbourg is in Germany - well there are good reasons for it. The whole of the Alsace-Lorraine region borders have been fluid since the Middle Ages - the French have always wanted their natural border to be the far side of the Rhine - to protect against Germanic aggression, and the Germans the other side for the same reason.

The area has flipped between "ownership" over the years and is bilingual, and beautifully multi-cultural. Go have a Google of Colmar, the birthplace of the sculptor of the Statue of Liberty, a German speaking Frenchman who fought on the the French side during the Prussian wars...

Cabinfever10 · 30/03/2021 09:44

I was taken in by David Attenborough and the BBCs April fools programme about the drought in Italy and how poor the spaghetti crop (from the spaghetti trees) would be. For years I believed that spaghetti grew on trees 🤦‍♀️😳

BabyBooDueNov21 · 30/03/2021 09:44

That a mortgage was all necessary outgoings combined when paying for a house.

One day I was washing up, with the hot tap running continuously, when my DF asked me to fill the dish so that I wasn't wasting hot water because it's 'not cheap.' I replied - 'but you pay the mortgage, so... 🤷🏼‍♀️'

A very sobering conversation followed where I was informed that yes, the mortgage keeps the roof over our head, but if I want hot water/the heating/lights switched on/wheelie bins emptied etc they're all extra costs. I was in my teens 😳

InMySpareTime · 30/03/2021 09:48

That Brussels sprouts grew on the ground like little baby cabbages.
I'd only ever seen them in nets in the supermarket and when (at an embarrassingly advanced age) I saw a stalk of sprouts I was 😱

EBearhug · 30/03/2021 09:49

Many internal European borders have swapped about a lot through history- we're pretty unusual in Britain for having such stable borders (even with places like Berwick) - which is because our borders are mostly coast.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 30/03/2021 09:51

The town of Herford in Germany. Its definitely got lost and should be in England. Ideally near Hereford....

Notjustanymum · 30/03/2021 09:51

That because we’ve never rented (bought our first property at 20), our DC would be able to do the same...

Onairjunkie · 30/03/2021 09:55

Someone in my family, who shall remain nameless, thought Dunkirk was in Scotland. Presumably somewhere near Falkirk.

fashionablydusty · 30/03/2021 09:55

When we had our first child, DH thought that babies constantly leaked poo and wee and this is why they wore nappies, needed changing mats and parents carried spare clothes etc. He was rather relieved when he first changed DC1 to discover that a well timed nappy change can be done without necessarily being covered in mess. He confessed that he had also assumed that at around 2/3 years old children stopped the constant leaking and that's when they started to use a potty/toilet.

I his defence, he was the only child of older parents and he never really spent time with babies before having his own.

I thought the big hill behind my house was a volcano 🌋

ILoveYourLittleHat · 30/03/2021 09:57

@LunaNorth

Glamorgan was in Scotland. It still trips me up, to be honest.

It just sounds Scottish to my ears.

Me too! When I was very small I thought shopkeepers giving you "change" was for if you didn't have enough money to buy the things you'd brought to the counter - so they'd pay the difference for you! Why else would a shopkeeper give you a small, specific amount of money?!
LudoBear · 30/03/2021 09:58

I was 15 when I found out that the man doesn't put his penis into vagina and leave it there. I didn't know they put it in/put/in/out... didn't really know what they did actually.

DogsAreShit · 30/03/2021 10:05

Yy Glamorgan and Dunkirk were in Scotland. Penrith was in Wales. Middlesbrough was in the Midlands. (Why the fuck else would it have the word "middle" in it?)

I remember my friend's DSis stating this to us when we were teenagers and she was 8! She said she knew how often her parents had sex, we choked on our juice until she stated 3 times! GrinWe still remind her of this Confused
WhatWouldPhyllisCraneDo · 30/03/2021 10:09

I'm fairly certain Glastonbury was in Scotland. I'm not sure when, or why they moved it to Somerset Grin
