Mouldy food in fridge with baby bottles.

So cut a long story short, went into the fridge of my friends house, ( we live next door and I'm part of her support bubble ) and she keeps her premade bottles in there. Her child is 16m and still on a lot of milk, however in the door opposite where she keeps the bottles was a mouldy bell pepper, with fuzz on it.

I mentioned it to her and she got up and threw the pepper out saying she didn't realise it was there, but it must've been there for a while to grow fuzz. I mentioned a possibility of contamination to other things in the fridge IE baby bottles. And she brushed it off saying well the tops and lids are on the bottles so it's not going to get into the bottle.

Am I being unreasonable?? I'd have to clean the whole fridge out and re make all bottles if that was me? Or am I just going OTT and she's completely right about nothing being able to get into the bottles.

16 months? Aren't they on cow's milk by now? My 15 month old only has one bottle a day. They're pretty resilient by this stage anyway. Probably putting all sorts in their mouth.

@IAmMeThisIsI

I am in talks with the GP for my anxiety, and have been for a while, just things taking a little bit longer, with everything else happening it's understandable. The only reason I helped her clean it was her child started crawling up her, so gave her a hand that way, she has an open plan kitchen/diner and that's where she was sitting at the time, so I didn't want to just throw it out, so instead just cracked a little joke about some extra flavour in the curry. And then the anxiety did creep in once I noticed the baby bottles. But all is well, I've been talking to her since I left and she seems fine, it's not been mentioned since.

They loved sharing 🤣

Aw OP, honestly I wouldn't worry about it then. She's obviously a good friend and she knows you better than anyone on here. So don't worry yourself about it.

Yes the treatment for mental health can sometimes take a while! Especially since covid etc. From my own experience I can tell you to keep chasing them up and be extremely honest with them about everything you're going through. In the end the treatment will be worth it. Good luck.

Conditionconditioncondition · 29/03/2021 19:56

Maybe spend less time worrying about other people's fridges and more time sorting out your own issues?

Talkabtit101 · 29/03/2021 19:56

@IAmMeThisIsI

Thank you, I feel bad by chasing them up as I know healthcare is in bad shape at the minute, I'll be contacted as soon as they can is the way I see it.

We're very good friends, and extremely close, I think this was more my anxious thinking rather than the actual mouldy pepper, since COVID I've been obsessed with germs and bacteria, so it's been one of those things. But as me and everyone else has stated, it was very OTT. And all should be fine with a bottle lid on.

In regards to other comments about cows milk, he has a milk allergy so is still on formula mainly, and he's not taken to a diet at all and is currently working with a paediatrician.

Fgs OP, how ridiculous. Hmm

Talkabtit101 · 29/03/2021 19:58

@Conditionconditioncondition

Thank you for that comment, however my own issues aren't something that I can actually " sort out " as I've been doing that for 6 months and I'm still on a waiting list. Private counselling is an option but most are phone-call based now and it not keen on spending £100 a session for a phone call. However I do look each day for face to face options. But as it stands there are none.

My DS has a milk allergy too but thankfully eats well and enjoys the oat milk.

I hope you manage to get some help with your anxiety soon.

Talkabtit101 · 29/03/2021 20:01

@PolytheneHam

Yeah it's been quite difficult for her as he ate okay from 8months till 1 year, then fully refused and would only drink the formula with very little food, it took months of pleading for help with it, it's a very difficult situation, as at the minute everything is a lot slower. But hopefully it picks up soon.

I did suggest oat milk before, but she'd said she had already tried it and it didn't go well.

Goat milk?

IAmMeThisIsI · 29/03/2021 20:12

I'm glad this thread has turned out being supportive towards the OP who is clearly suffering from mental health issues. Sometimes, I notice on mumsnet that people seem to find it easier to bring a poster down, rather than help out with kind comments and useful advice. I see all too often people who have mental health issues being name called and vilified on threads. This one feels like it's taken a turn for the best. Breath of fresh air. 😄

You are being OTT but I saw my mum at the weekend and noticed mould in the seal on her fridge door and secretly cleaned it 🙈. I know logically it's fine but it freaked me out (my issues too!). Just so you know you're not alone!

Beseigedbykillersquirrels · 29/03/2021 20:19

Completely off topic I know but your friend's child sounds just like mine. Has she tried him on Alpro Soya growing up milk? Much cheaper than the formula (even if it's on prescription so so immediate cost to her, that stuff is mega pricey). It can be used in cooking and everything as she would use cow's milk.

stuckinarutatwork · 29/03/2021 20:20

Very much OTT. The mould won't jump from the pepper and through the lids into the bottles! Even if it did, it isn't really harmful to a 16 month old.

@Beseigedbykillersquirrels

Hi! No I don't think she knows about that, I'll definitely mention it to her, she doesn't always manage to get it prescribed I know a few times I've had to drive out to boots 24HR pharmacy to get some, especially on weekends as they give it but if on a weekend she runs out your pretty screwed. But I'm definitely mention it to her. I think she's worried as he's not taking much nutrients from other foods, which is why she's stuck on the formula, he does drink juice and water though which is good hydration wise. Just the lack of diet, I've even tried to feed him to see if it's any difference. But he just gets worked up and doesn't take the food. It's a shame really n

Deal with your anxieties and don't project onto your friend.

Sounds just like mine! I was so relieved to get her off the formula and onto this (it's specifically fortified for 2-3 year olds). Formula is a complete faff!
