I think I was successful as a TA which I worked as for 2 years, but sadly the salary was very low (16/17k).
I was fired from a shop job when I was a teenager for making mistakes with the till etc.
I had 2 café/waitressing jobs where I wasn't fired, but a lot of criticism, especially from one who told me it seemed like I was regressing instead of progressing.
I was a teacher and that's what I trained in, but I was put on a support plan and quit before it went to formal capability.
I was a TEFL teacher abroad for a couple of years and I did really well with that I thought, but it was zero hours contracts sadly.
I got a TEFL job here but had a few classes taken off me, if just one student was unhappy, irrespective of the other 9, the lessons would be given to another teacher.

I've established teaching isn't for me, I seem to lack the energy it requires.

I work now in care but there's a lot of feeling of am I actually good at this, do I actually enjoy this (it's adults with severe learning difficulties and personal care needs) it's rewarding but can be challenging.

No idea if I'm actually doing well, I do what's asked and I show compassion and care. Never been told that I'm doing a good job.

Feel like I don't actually know what I'm good at. I'm quite logical and I enjoyed that aspect of teaching, but not the behavioural and pastoral issues. I always feel like you need a big personality in teaching, and many of them seem very confident.

Maybe I am a bit lazy too, but I've sometimes wondered if I am on the autistic spectrum.

I would just like a low pressure job, I'm prepared to work full time but I'm not willing to commit my life to a job and give up all my free time. Just want something relatively simple, where I'm independent and not constantly managed. No idea what to do anymore.

Have you thought about working in a school in a pastoral role? House or Year Group Officer, Safeguarding, Attendance, Exam Officer or Data Manager?

GlamorousHeifer · 17/02/2022 18:07

Truthfully, stay in care. They are desperate for staff right now so unless you do something truly horrific they won't get rid of you.
Just put your foot down and stick to your contracted hours (or find a care job with the hours you want) and keep your head down!

Butchyrestingface · 17/02/2022 18:13

It's not well paid and I don't know if there are a lot of jobs going in this area any more, but as a student, I did a lot of data entry roles (back office for banks and the like). I absolutely fucking LOVED it.

It was very routine, pretty mindless, I could more or less just switch off and get on with it. Zero pressure. Was able to work part-time or full time hours. But as I say, not great pay.

HotChoc10 · 17/02/2022 18:31

I'm sorry you're going through this, it's an awful feeling to lose your confidence. You sound like a thoughtful, conscientous person and it sounds like the care work is going well - you'd know if it wasn't, I think, you might just be a bit bruised from the other experiences.

I do agree with the person who said that most people do just tolerate their jobs though, rather than enjoy them. So you're not alone there!

What about sorting mail at royal mail? The pay is way above the market average compared to Amazon, Hermes etc. You could certainly get a temp job for a few shifts in the run up to Xmas to see if you like it and maybe get taken on if you persevere.

You would be on your feet a lot and maybe some shifts at unsociable hours but very low pressure job and if you get taken on by RM it is great security.

Hi OP I feel like this as well- have horrible memories of not getting on well at shop jobs or waitressing when I was young...

I've tried working in a museum which was OK mainly selling tickets, patrolling about but they wanted to make us give guided tours which I found stressful.

I tried working in childcare when teaching didn't work out for me, but found myself too emotionally involved and found the constant struggle to have enough staff stressful. they also wanted me to manage other staff and take on more responsibility due to having my teaching qualification.

I've done a bit of secondhand book selling on Amazon which used to be OK but now the prices have come right down and it got more difficult.

Like you, I like the idea of not being managed / over managed, but not sure what I would like to do in the future. I'm not doing anything at the moment as I have some health conditions also

Just to let you know you are not alone Flowers

I once had a job a bit like this for Royal mail temping (through an agency) sorting it was OK but quite tedious
Orangesandlemons77 · 17/02/2022 20:20

Maybe a temping agency could be helpful actually, could try some things without the permanency and also have a chance of staying on if they need someone. Mainly office work though.

Sorry just remembered I had posted on your thread previously. Blush It's been a long day. Hope you find something OP

Haus1234 · 17/02/2022 20:24

Something in the public sector, eg local council? It has a reputation for a slower pace and good flexibility.

Alternatively, something like pensions administration?

Lemmyathim · 17/02/2022 20:48

Tutoring?

Orangesandlemons77 · 17/02/2022 21:26

What about freelance copywriting or proofreading...you say you enjoy writing and want to be self employed...could combine with something like exam invigilating or marking for a bit of extra income and maybe keep some hours in care while you build it up?
