Would you go to this wedding?

Original wedding postponed due to Covid to 2022 but I'm now pregnant.

We don't want to wait to be married and all 'proper' weddings are fully booked this year.

Would you attend a low key registry office wedding followed by drinks / bbq in the couples garden?

Or possibly just family at the registry office and invite other guests to the bbq? No pressure to stay a long time etc. Very laid back.

Does it sound naff / weird?

If you were my friend, I'd go with bells on....I much prefer smaller intimate gatherings where those invited know the couple well rather seeing lots of expense for huge crowd of people you feel you must invite. Congrats...have a great wedding....

Frokni · 27/03/2021 22:22

Sounds lovely! Go for it OP.

CherryPieface · 27/03/2021 22:22

This sounds like my perfect wedding invitation! Congratulations x

SeptemberAlexandra · 27/03/2021 22:23

Sounds beautiful. I much prefer intimate ceremonies where the focus is on the marriage rather than the wedding.

Londonmummy66 · 27/03/2021 22:24

Absolutely - most of the nicest weddings I have been to are the laid back low key ones

WeeWelshWoman · 27/03/2021 22:24

Sounds blissful.

Neonlightning · 27/03/2021 22:24

That sounds really lovely.

You could always set a "garden party" dress code, so your guests know to dress up more than jeans and t-shirt. Nothing wrong with jeans and t-shirt if that's what you want, but I also enjoy making an effort.

I would love to be invited to a wedding celebration party and to wear a pretty dress.

applesandpears33 · 27/03/2021 22:24

That sounds lovely. I suspect most weddings would have been like this before the big wedding industry took over. Much more intimate than an impersonal function venue. Have a great day.

Ragwort · 27/03/2021 22:24

Yes ,.. my first wedding was a very simple reception in the garden with a scout tent - we did all the food ourselves, very low key and easy going. Only immediate family at the register office.

Second wedding even smaller Grin - lunch for six !

Hydrate · 27/03/2021 22:24

Sounds perfect to me.

Thewinterofdiscontent · 27/03/2021 22:25

Absolutely. People will love the difference between yours and the identikit weddings everyone else does.

domesticslattern · 27/03/2021 22:25

Sounds lovely.
Hire a couple of local teenagers to pass drinks round and man the door. Don't do it all yourself!

katienana · 27/03/2021 22:26

It sounds lovely. Big weddings are lovely also. Why does everyone have to compliment one style of wedding by slating another. What matters is that you're happy with it and marrying the person you love.

MaryShelley1818 · 27/03/2021 22:26

It sounds absolutely perfect 👌

Cherrysoup · 27/03/2021 22:28

Sounds brilliant. I’d be there like a shot.

Neonlightning · 27/03/2021 22:28

A wedding I went to last year was really low key at the family holiday home. It was so much fun and so relaxed.

My friends did also set up a staffed bar, with custom cocktails which was so much better than the standard wedding wines. And food was a Mexican food truck. Super fun! Actually, way more fun than a AUD $105K wedding I also went to that year.

MixedUpFiles · 27/03/2021 22:32

I had a wedding that was just ceremony and dinner on a Monday night for a small group of family and friends do a backyard bbq sounds perfect to me.

I might or might not be able to attend depending on the particular timing and Covid rates because of our households vulnerability, but if we couldn’t attend, I would be very disappointed.

So many events have been canceled or postponed repeatedly this year. I would hope the lesson most of us take from this experience is that it’s the people that matter. Gathering the people you love to celebrate your marriage is the important part. The pictures will be just as amazing in your backyard as they would in the perfect venue because it’s about capturing the moments with the people. Wow, I’m feeling maudlin right now. Somehow your post triggered a memory of a picture of my grandmother at my wedding. It wasn’t a moment I saw myself, but she has the most wonderful smile on her face. It really captured exactly who she was.

Anyway, that’s what weddings are, those little moments. People don’t need a big event. They just want a chance to celebrate with you.

katy1213 · 27/03/2021 22:33

That sounds miles nicer than a 'proper' wedding.

DeRigueurMortis · 27/03/2021 22:33

Sounds lovely and I'd 100% prefer it to a wedding in an overpriced venue where drinks cost a fortune and you're inevitably seated with people you have nothing in common with and spend hours waiting around whilst photos are being taken.

The one good thing about the pandemic is that I think a lot of people are re-visiting their priorities.

Just make sure you plan for any weather - maybe hire/ buy some gazebos (you can get cheap ones from Amazon) so there is shade/shelter from sun/rain.

candle18 · 27/03/2021 22:35

Can’t think of anything better, so much more relaxed

jessstan2 · 27/03/2021 22:35

It sounds like a good idea, op. Very genuine.

Larryslockdownlunch · 27/03/2021 22:35

Was basically my wedding 16 years ago but baby was already born! Best thing I ever did

parietal · 27/03/2021 22:37

we did a party in our london garden for a joint 40th birthday. we hired a waitress to organise the food (M&S canapes in oven) so we could enjoy things & it was all very easy. The same would work just fine for a wedding.

ImAlrightThanx · 27/03/2021 22:38

The best wedding I ever went to was a registry office and then a gathering at the bride's mums house (complete with Buffett) Really relaxed and no stress for anybody.
I would attend in a heartbeat.

purpletrees16 · 27/03/2021 22:39

I’d also say supplement the bbq with catering pasta salad dishes if it’s larger numbers. If walking distance friends mostly you can split the day to save money too - invite people to the ceremony and to the evening bash but leave the day to them to get food or eat at home (as my friend did) so it was just crisps and BYOB. Still a great time.
