To get an electric scooter for my 40th

My husband was going to get me an electric scooter for my 40th. I can’t drive and I think it would be fun, and I could use it for getting to/from work.

The rest of my family are horrified and think that everyone would laugh at me.

Personally I couldn’t give a fuck about randoms laughing at me , but I have noticed it really is only teenagers going about on them.

Aibu to get an electric scooter?

A bike is not a scooter

murbblurb · 29/03/2021 12:15

Op now knows this is pointless. No wheels on the pavement except wheelchair or pushchair. Not even kids on scooters. Use your feet if they work.

Not legal on the road, and when they we won't be short of organ donors.

Get a mobility scooter! One with a top speed of 4mph is for pavements (only 8mph ones can go on roads) Sorted!

MsScoot · 29/03/2021 17:44

Thanks for the suggestions: I’m not disabled at all physically, so I don’t think I can get a mobility scooter m

Some mean joyless answers on here, no kids scooters on pavements either?!

murbblurb · 29/03/2021 18:16

Correct. It is the law. A small child going much faster than its feet will allow is a bloody menace on a pavement.
There's also one who would have been dead if I didn't reverse into my drive, so when the fool of a mother let it scoot almost under my car i saw it and stopped. I may not have seen it if I had reversed out.

Not a matter of 'joyless', but the usual matter of not living on a private estate.

I have one of these.

They’re great for wide open pavements and some cycle paths.

They’re a menace on wide open pavements, which are for pedestrians. If you must use it, do so on the roads

If you do get a scooter, please also get a well fitting helmet.

@ElectricScooters

Loads of teenagers round here have them and fly along the pavements.

My DD is deaf and recently was nearly knocked under the wheels of a car as she didn't hear the scooter coming up behind her at speed.

Admittedly the risk of a scooter encountering a deaf person is low but the consequences could be horrific. I wish people would consider things like this as well as pavement cyclists (she was knocked over by a pavement cyclist a few years back and badly hurt her knees.)

OP I know you said you weren't getting one, but I would ask anyone thinking of it or getting one for your DC or anyone who rides a bike on the pavement - imagine knocking a child into the path of an incoming car as they didn't hear you coming.

If you think it's too risky for yourself to ride on the road, it's so fucking selfish to ride on the pavement and risk others lives.

Sorry this happened but cycles also don't make a noise. And travel at similar speed. If it's a share use path. Your daughter should pick a side of the path to walk on.
ElectricScooters · 31/03/2021 11:21

It's amazing that people are so self centred as well as ignorant. It's not a shared use footpath (well certainly not where I live in England) and is illegal to cycle on the pavements - it's in the Highway Code as well as legislation. There was a crackdown here a couple of years ago and fixed penalties/fines handed out.

Injuring someone and "cycling carelessly" could end up in a two
year prison sentence or a £1,000 or £2,500 fine. Perhaps the thought of this may put people off, if they are too selfish to give a fuck about injuring or killing people, deaf or not.

I looked into this when my DC was knocked down. Imagine being the person who knocked a deaf child under the wheels of the car. If you think you can live with seeing that and living with it forever, carry on cycling on where it is forbidden and tell people who can't hear you coming "Pick a side to walk on".

I will continue to judge people like that as selfish and ignorant.

ElectricScooters · 31/03/2021 11:24

Interestingly, the person who knocked my DC down, cycled off as quickly as they could and left her on the floor.

Perhaps they thought she should have just picked a side to walk on and didn't give a fuck. Or perhaps they realised what they had done and didn't want to face the consequences.

What kind of person is that? And if your defence is "well if I knocked someone over of course I would stop" have a think about that sentence for a moment.
