To never shop at Iceland again

Brilliant for picking up weird ice cream treats for the children in summer that no where else stocks and my children love the hot dog stuffed pizza crusts for Friday pizza night but I have just read this, and my poor children will be forever deprived of the most revolting looking pizza on the planet ....

To summarise. Iceland increased sales by 20% to £2.9 billion (not a typo) over lockdown. However they are the only big supermarket chain not returning the £40 million tax relief they received. So essentially we have given £40 million at a time when they are taking in money like never before.

Sainsbury’s, Tesco, Morrisons, Asda, Aldi, Lidl - are ALL returning

To never shop at Iceland again

Iceland are a bunch of hypocrites they haven't banned Palm oil at all I went in there thinking that they would only stock non-palm oil products and it is total bollocks

anything that's not made by them contains palm Oil and they're still selling it All of those products. I never was a big shopper there but I certainly won't be using them anymore ever.

BoJoHoNo · 27/03/2021 22:30

“The owners have extracted almost £150 million since the onset of the pandemic” to buy out a former shareholder and acquire 28 restaurants. He doesn’t mention any of that in his explanation whatsoever!

Which has safeguarded existing jobs and will presumably create many more opportunities in the future once the hospitality sector reopens. Everyone has the right to choose were they want to spend their money though and if you think Tesco or wherever are more ethical/worthy etc then fair play to you.

Norwaydidnthappen · 27/03/2021 23:19

My Nan is a fan of Iceland, I think it’s because they deliver free of charge and she likes frozen veg and fish.

I’m not really a fan, we don’t eat much frozen food so it’s a bit lost on us.

ssd · 28/03/2021 08:14

Iceland sell more than frozen food.

I thought they were only doing for their own brands products , did they say they were banning it from their shops altogether? Your problem there might be caused by a misunderstanding.
SnowWhitesRestingBitchFace · 28/03/2021 08:53

We do a lot of our shopping in Iceland (I honestly don't think a lot of people realise they also stock fresh produce too). We have 2 stores local to us and they are always friendly and helpful. We were able to get deliveries all through lockdown, never once had a ridiculous substitution either. If they were entitled to the money then they were entitled to it 🤷🏻‍♀️

Lochmorlich · 28/03/2021 09:00

Well imo Iceland will always be a cut above Tesco heiress Shirley Porter.

DropDTuning · 28/03/2021 09:01

Yabu to have ever shopped there

@FionnulaTheCooler

I don't understand why supermarkets were given money in the first place when they were never required to close. I can understand why places like clothes shops etc were given it to keep them going until they were allowed to reopen and hopefully start turning a profit again, but why supermarkets when Covid would have had no effect on people's need to buy food, or in fact increased sales due to more people having lunch at home instead of at work or school?
A lot of what Rishi did makes no sense at all. Just look at the 3 million self employed he excluded for nonsensical reasons.
RingtheBells · 28/03/2021 09:09

They haven't done anything wrong though, your blame should lie with the government who gave the supermarkets this in the first place.

Inthevirtualwaitingroom · 28/03/2021 09:11

i went in to my local iceland, they had no hand sanitiser on the door as you go in, not impressed, and no where to complain online

sophiasnail · 28/03/2021 09:50

When my mother who is shielding and very inexperienced with technology, tried to do her very first online shop, she chose Iceland because it was the only place she could get a slot. I don't think she has ever been into an Iceland store. They forgot to include her eggs and made a few odd substitutions and she got herself in a muddle and called the number on the receipt. It actually took her through to the manager of the local store who explained very patiently that they could refund the things she didn't want, and she could still keep them, and actually offered to jump in his car and bring round her eggs. That manager was so kind to a confused old lady, that I would happily forgive anything Iceland does! (We're 120 miles away, otherwise I would be doing her shopping)

Yabu to have ever shopped there
Why is that?

I'm not a regular shopper there but will go in on occasion if I'm passing and need something as it's easier than going to a large supermarket. Why would any be unreasonable to shop there Confused

i've been to several supermarkets and i've never seen anyone sanitise their hands or trolley handles. why would you ? people are handling products etc on the shop floor.
GreenSlide · 28/03/2021 11:55

@warmandtoasty2day why would you sanitise your hands? Have you been living under a rock for the last year?

malaboi · 28/03/2021 11:57

I used Iceland over lockdown as only place I could get deliveries (ocado was a shit show). I like them, lots of branded goods that are good value & food selection of frozen veg

malaboi · 28/03/2021 11:59

I don't shop in Tesco but absolutely wouldn't now as they were fined for underpaying 70k staff

It was an off-the-cuff comment. I just hate it and think it has consistently the worst quality and least healthy food of any supermarket. It may be cheap but it's very poor value for money if you look at ingredients

But I am not heavily invested in defending this opinion.

Tesco reported itself to the HMRC for this error in its payroll system!

And repaid all employees and previous employees effected

malaboi · 28/03/2021 12:07

I know they reported it themselves but errors on payroll sound so pretty suspect to me as I work in payroll

malaboi · 28/03/2021 12:08

Of course they should have repaid staff, my point is it's shouldn't happen in the first place.

Of course not But it was an error That was identified, they reported themselves and paid it all back

Not great but no corruption or malice to it by the look of it

Surely the branded stuff they sell is exactly the same ingredients as the branded stuff in other supermarkets? Eg I can pay a 6 pack of Heinz beans for £3 something in Iceland whereas one tin in my local m&s is almost £1.

malaboi · 28/03/2021 12:12

@Lentillover1900 it's a legal requirement to pay back if you have underpaid staff Confused
