Another inheritance and universal credit one

Sorry, I know these have been done a bit.

DH lost his beloved mum last year, we received the inheritance a month ago and it was very gratefully received, we've been able to pay off all debts and buy things we've needed for a while, like new clothes and shoes ect. Nothing extravagant.

The inheritance put us above the savings limit for universal credit, but after paying off debts we are below the threshold again.
I know the debates, we have some money in savings now so can and are using that for day to day living atm, but are we still entitled to UC because we are below the savings bracket again? The savings money will run out eventually obviously.

So YABU you are not entitled

YANBU you should be entitled still

You should be eligible if you are below the threshold. Tabby

If you have under £6k, don't worry about it. Between £6 and £16, you need to declare it (and your UC will be reduced accordingly). Over £16k, you lose your UC.

@XenoBitch
We have between the 6k and 16k band, we were receiving approx £560 per month in UC before the inheritance

You can try claiming but they will probably want receipts for everything to check whether its deprivation of capital. Think they deduct £4.25 for every £250 over the 6k

Technically, you are meant to declare it to DWP... but if you don't, I certainly would not judge you. You have had the chance to repay some debts, replace clothing, make life a bit more pleasant. They would only be interested if you were off buying cars and going on holidays... as they see it as purposely reducing your savings to continue a claim.

So I hope you don't mind me asking
If you get inheritance do you have to tell them straightaway or can you use it to pay off debts and things? Will they let you do that?

purpleme12 · 26/03/2021 23:47

Maybe someone's answered that question actually...
