...to really, really hate Sally, Mum of Spot?

She's so nice. And so calm. And she never shrieks like a harpy at Spot's insanely irritating behaviour lovable antics.

Today's story was about Sally cheerily helping Spot bake a cake for his Dad's birthday. Spot trashes the kitchen, drips chocolate cake batter all over the place, wastes several eggs by breaking them on the worktop. Sally remains calm. I'd have been reaching for the gin.

There have always been dodgy goings on in children's stories - remember Andy Pandy (in the olden days when they had strings, not the Tom Conti-narrated rubbish)? He was forever getting in a basket with Looby-Loo and Teddy - and shutting the lid.

Emzy5 · 08/11/2007 21:00

if i were maisy and charlie the croc was about, i'd wear my panties in the bath too.

Of course, reading the Spot books has been enormously educational, leading to extended discussions with dd1 about whether Spot poos in the toilet or in the garden.

You don't get that level of intellectual stimulation with Beatrix Potter.

Yes Spot probably just cocks his leg against a lamp-post. Maybe Sally has a pooper scooper and plastic bag for the big stuff.

welliemum · 08/11/2007 21:23

Spot is indeed a classic PFB.

I seem to recall seeing (we don't have it) a book in which Spot gets a baby sister and is really happy and loves playing with her. [vomit]

We can only hope (for his own sake) that he later developed some more emotionally healthy responses, eg trying to feed her rat poison or have her sent back to the pet shop.

We've no Maisy at all. What's the opinion of the panel, should we give her a try?

Oh yes, where is that naughty Spot? He's not eating his dinner - let's go and hunt for him around the house!! - I don't think so!! (Lift the flap flaps ripped off on first reading!!!) If he's not there to eat his dinner, he doesn't get any in our house!!!!
And has anyoone else got 'Maisy's Rainbow Dream' - far out man!!! The dds love it!! - Woooaaahhhh!!!!

Shitemum · 08/11/2007 21:26

I hate the whole spotty family

Shitemum · 08/11/2007 21:27

We've got Maisy's rainbow dream! I love it, the DDs quite like it too... Maisy is 100x better than blardy Spot.

BlueCornflower · 08/11/2007 21:31

Do you know, now you mention it, I've always thought Sally is a bit pathetic too although I've never consciously thought about it. Can't remember a specific occasion but she's rather wet.

Don't mind Maisy though. We have a few of the videos. Anyone else got the one where Cyril wets his pants? (They come off then Slubberdegullion...Cyril's I mean, not Maisy's...)

MingMingtheWonderPet · 08/11/2007 21:35

I too am a bit concerned about Maisy's rainbow Dream
DD1 loves it though. She loves any Mainsy book!

Spot is a pita!
There is one where he makes and decorates a cake for his Dad's birthday. Kitchen a mess, cake a mess, Sally just looks on indulgently (pfb!)

LazyLinePainterJane · 08/11/2007 21:35

DS loves that fucking lovely cake story. He wants to read it several times a day and loves it when the mouse says that they need CHEESE!

welliemum · 08/11/2007 21:44

Oh yes, the little mouse in the cupboard... (flap long since torn off and eaten)

So very funny. Ha. Ha. Ha.

We have that video! Sadly the video recorder is no longer hooked up . Maisy is seriously loved in this house and our books are doing their third round although annoyingly I have started to read them in the style of Neil Morissey .

Welliemum, YANBU. I did 3 Spot stories this evening and Sally was definitely more nausiating than I remembered.

LazyLinePainterJane · 08/11/2007 21:51

They read so badly though. All stilted with no flow!

And there are bones in the cake. I hope he chokes.

MingMingtheWonderPet · 08/11/2007 22:08

What has happened to Spot's sister though?
I have never seen her in any other book
Maybe Spot dropped her down the stairs, or maybe she got sent to live on a farm

(My mum told me that about our dog, I later found out the real meaning of 'the dog has gone to live on a farm'!)

RosaTransylvania · 08/11/2007 23:03

I made the mistake of buying my children the DVD box set of Little House on the Prairie.
Now my children know what a real mother should be like.
Ma Ingalls.
I would like to shoot the bitch be that perfect.

TinyGang · 09/11/2007 09:12

Rofl..No-one could live up to the saintly Ingalls. Freshly baked cornbread anyone?

Ooh, forgot to say how much I enjoyed olive's description of bedtime (further down this thread).

Amazingly similar to bedtime chez wellie. Not much skipping about saying "Good Night Table" here either

This thread has really cheered me up!!

3andnomore · 09/11/2007 23:29

oh, sally, maisy and peppa pigs mummy and daddy pig et al...all should be punished, they completely mislead in the way they portray parenting....well...or I am just a complete incompetent mummy who should have her children removed...that would be, of course, a possibility aswell!

(And gosh there are days when that seems a perfectly reasonable option...sigh...as much as I love them and all!

welliemum · 13/11/2007 21:30

Was thinking about this thread yesterday while making scones with the dd's.

8oz worth of scone dough eventually resulted in 5 comedy scones and flour all over the entire house. They had a lovely time but I aged about 10 years in one afternoon.

I love cooking but I'm just not cut out for this pinny-wearing Bake With Mother stuff, am I?
