Posting for traffic

My sister is due her first baby in May and they have bought absolutely everything they could possibly need so I am seriously struggling for gift ideas!

I thought it might be nice to put together a little bedtime story hamper of books they can share when baby is here

Mine is Guess How Much I Love You so will put that in, are there any other really beautiful or amazing stories you would recommend?

Some of my favourites (all fairly old!):

Each peach pear plum
Mr Magnolia has only one boot
The Very Hungry Caterpillar
Peace at last
Any of "The Large Family" stories
The Grumpalump
Little Bear
Dear Zoo

Our favourites have been wordless books, like Tuesday and Flotsam by David Wiesner. You can make up your own stories, and when the child get older, they can join in.

I think "Oh, the places you'll go" by Dr Seuss is my all time favourite to read to my kids though.

The Baby Who Wouldn't go to Bed was one of my dc's favourites.
"So the baby revved up his car vroomchugachug and drove away as fast as he could and the mother couldn't catch him..."
Always made us yawn though.

One Ted falls out of bed was also one of ds' favourites.
Green Eggs and ham went down well with all three of them.

And any of the Bunny and Bee books-Noisy Night was the favourite, but they're also good for first readers as there's a lot of repetition.

‘I love you to the moon and back’ is sweet too.
My nieces and nephews love/loved ‘Peepo’ and ‘Ten little fingers and ten little toes’ when babies, the older one is into ‘The Gruffalo’ and ‘Hairy Maclary from Donaldsons Dairy’ now.

We found some great books for children here - it’s actors reading stories for save the children but we’ve got a lot of the books as a result of hearing them. ‘Click clack moo, cows that type’ is our favourite! We’re doing a lot of Zoom/FT contact now, so glad to find new stories.

Goodnight Moon
The Big Big Sea
One Ted Fell Out Of Bed
Down in the woods at sleepy time
Peepo

Morred · 25/03/2021 12:14

Not specifically for bedtime, but There's A Bear on My Chair is one of my son's favourite bedtime stories. It's funny, good illustrations and ends with a picture of a bed :)

AryaStarkWolf · 25/03/2021 12:15

The Gruffalo was my daughters favourite by far, she's 21 now and I think I could still remember every line Grin

WonkyCactus · 25/03/2021 12:17

My nieces love the books in the Oi Frog series and the older one (age 3) has a great book called All the Ways to Be Smart which I've read to her many times!

TheSoapyFrog · 25/03/2021 12:25

Love You Forever, although I always cry when I read it. Or think about it...

ilovespinach · 25/03/2021 12:25

Julia Donaldson Books - The snail and the whale, Tiddler, Room on the Broom etc

Tal45 · 25/03/2021 12:36

Dear Zoo, Each Peach Pear Plum, Very Hungry Caterpillar x

Sparks46th · 25/03/2021 12:46

We've got a newborn, so following with extreme interest

TheKeatingFive · 25/03/2021 13:08

I think Goodnight Moon should be gifted to every newborn. There’s witchcraft in it. It sent my two off to sleep every time.

Anything by Sandra Boynton is brilliant for this age, shout out for Moo Baa Lalala in particular.

A big favourite of mine when they were babies was Where is the Green Sheep? In fact anything by Mem Fox is a winner.

BabyBee93 · 25/03/2021 13:08

Ah you're all fab thanks so much! Some lovely recommendations

So pleased to see the Gruffalo is still popular Grin I nannied many moons ago and the children I looked after loved it, so I'm glad to see it's still a favourite

And I LOVE the idea of wordless books! So imaginative
