Ice Cream Van being parked almost opposite school - AIBU?

146 replies

CleverCatty · 24/03/2021 15:16

I've noticed that over Lockdown an Ice Cream Van has been parked almost opposite the school gates and most days from 2pm onwards (so when the nursery finishes for the day it's there and then when school ends).

The van used to be parked further down the road on which I live but has obviously moved further, nearer to the school?

AIBU that it shouldn't be every day or am I just being a Moaning Minnie?

Preying on kids ? If you don't want your kid to have an ice cream just say no?

SeasonFinale · 24/03/2021 16:41

see previous threads on here and on NM have criticised this being so close to the school and every day.

So your justification for complaining is that other whingers have also whinged about it too.

My original comment as to if it is a legitimate business acting within the law then so what. You can choose to buy or pass on by.

NumberThirtySix · 24/03/2021 16:44

In my city they need Street Trading Consent and can be prosecuted if they don't follow it- or have consent withdrawn. They are not allowed to park within 100m of school grounds. They can park for max of 5 minutes- then stay only long enough to serve customers in the queue. Then they must move on.
We had one outside school every day. It parked up over an hour before school finished in order to get the plum spot outside the gates. The queue blocked the pavement and kids were forced to walk round it IN THE ROAD!!! I reported it.

Just4thisone · 24/03/2021 16:45

There is one outside my kids school. They get an ice cream of the van about once a year. I just say no. Kids need to understand thry can't always have something because another child does. And the parent needs to understand its a business. And children can't be shielded from from everything.

MessAllOver · 24/03/2021 16:46

Grin Is this for real?

Unless your children are pickpockets or muggers-in-training, you don't have an issue...you control the money!

You should view it as a positive - this is an excellent opportunity to practice saying no. My DS is allowed ice-cream on Friday and, after much sulking, he has finally accepted that's it and has stopped trying to extract cornetto cones from the freezer in the hope that I'll give in once he's standing in front of me with the cone in his hand and a pathetic look on his sweet little face.

AuditAngel · 24/03/2021 16:46

Took DD2 (10) to the park after school on Friday last week, we (the mums) were disappointed the ice cream van didn’t turn up.

BrownEyedGirl80 · 24/03/2021 16:47

Just tell ds that when the music's on then they've run out of ice-cream

Except she has later qualified her original statement and said he parked around the corner - so how exactly do you know he has broken the law?

Well laws against chimes "7.1. The chimes should not be played in areas where people may be especially sensitive to their sound. In particular they should not be played:

a. within 50 metres of any hospital or similar institution;

b. within 50 metres of a school during school hours;

c. within 50 metres of a place of worship on a Sunday or other recognised day of worship. "

see it's parked on one of the main side roads that kids walk home from school from and parents walk down from. Literally less than a minute from the school and just across the road and in vision.

And he's there from 2pm when nursery finishes at the school and stays up until I think 6pm most nights if not later.

So no idea of rules around this but he parks up. Not sure if he's in a proper parking space or just parks on double yellows which we had painted there as it was getting stupid re parking.

I wish the ice cream van would park outside my house, he plays his music and I get all happy and then see he's parked half way down the street, I'm not committed enough to walk down the street.

CleverCatty · 24/03/2021 17:00

@katy1213

Moaning minnie and joyless grouch.
that's me!

See I can't get that worked up (when he's open) about the park cafe which is on the recreation ground opposite the school which also sells coffees, ice creams etc. My issue here is especially now the ice cream van has parked right next to the school, in clear vision of the playground.

lazylinguist · 24/03/2021 17:01

So you're cross with an ice cream van being parked not in front of but round the corner from a school, because last year it tempted you (a non-parent) too much and you bought lots of ice creams. Righty ho. Sorry, but that sounds like a you problem. Get some self-control and let parents say no to their children (like they have to in umpteen other circumstances- passing the sweets aisle in the supermarket, walking past the newsagent's etc).

TurquoiseDress · 24/03/2021 17:10

We have this outside DC1 primary school!

Does not bother me at all

If my child pesters me for an ice cream, all I say is no as we have plenty at home Grin

Maybe as a treat at the end of the week, especially if the sun is shining & everyone is going round with ice lollies & ice creams, ahhh the memories of primary & secondary school

TurquoiseDress · 24/03/2021 17:11

Oh and even ice cream sellers in vans need to make a living!

WhentheDealGoesDown · 24/03/2021 17:14

@whetherpigshavewings

If you are in England, he shouldn't be allowed in front of the school in the middle of a lockdown!

But no-one cares. Beauty spots are flooded with ice cream vans/ snacks / coffee vans... even if in theory we are only supposed to go there to EXERCISE, not meeting friends for coffee...When everybody else is doing it, why not.

You can meet one person for coffee or an ice cream now or any other food or drink without exercise, it changed on March 8th
Chooseausernamenow · 24/03/2021 17:18

Give the kids a break. They’ve had a shit year. A few ice creams aren’t going to kill them. Good god I’ve just read you’re not even a parent. Why on earth are you bothered what other people legally get up to. You need to get a hobby.

IEat · 24/03/2021 17:21

Just tell your kids No you can’t have an ice cream. No need to ruin for those that can

GintyMcGinty · 24/03/2021 17:24

It's just someone trying to make a living.

If parents don't want to buy ice cream they don't need to.

BriarsHollow · 24/03/2021 17:24

Did this thread go differently to how the OP expected?

Confusedandshaken · 24/03/2021 17:26

This has always gone on. You've only just noticed it.

I can remember the halcyon summer of 1976 when the ice cream van actually parked inside our secondary school playground at lunchtimes. I was 14 and had just got my first Saturday job so could actually afford to buy things from him. A rare treat as my mum had never allowed us ice cream van ice cream because it was unhygienic.
