Can anyone give me some advise please.
DS is in year 4 and has always found it hard at school. Over the years he's got all these diagnoses and always been behind. He's quite a gentle soul and not really needed extra support, just getting on with it on his own way. Or so I thought!! School now say he is 3 years behind and needs specialist. I'm completely blindsided. I don't want him to move schools but I don't want him to be failed. What should I be doing? What should the school be doing? They say no resources for catch up classes or an extra adult to help him. I'm close to tears and don't know that to do. Any experience or advice would be welcomed.

Has he got an EHCP? If not then they need to be putting in for one right away. If they won't then you should do it.

Cloudyrainsham · 24/03/2021 14:05

Apply for an EHCP. You don’t need the support of the school. It’s a crap process with LA’s fighting you every step of the way but it’s the only way he’ll get the support he needs. Have a look at the IPSEA website. There are lots of model letters on there and info that you’ll need.

Lougle · 24/03/2021 14:09

I'm sorry you've had such a shock. Has he got an EHCP? If not, now would be the time to get that ball rolling. The educational psychologist will be able to recommend a type of setting during that process.

Trytrytryasimight · 24/03/2021 17:43

Thanks no, no ehc.
Looking into that now not sure if I need the schools support??
Every parents eve they've said he's 'where he should be'
Now I feel like a shit mum and an idiot Sad

He needs an EHCP, if they've said he needs specialist they are idiots to not have applied.

Ipsea have model letters you can use to submit a parental request, send all the evidence you have.

If he is emotionally managing I doubt an LA would make him move school, they would provide additional funding for his learning needs to be met but the school should be evidencing interventions already in place.

Schools have a nasty habit of saying all is fine when it's not.

Mumofsend · 24/03/2021 17:58

If you are on Facebook I recommend ehcp experiences and educational equality for v.good groups

WetWeekends · 24/03/2021 18:03

@Mumofsend

“ Schools have a nasty habit of saying all is fine when it's not.”

Why do they do this? My DC had a report filled in by school last year for his diagnosis that painted a terrible picture, since his diagnosis and me saying “what happens now, what help will he be getting” they’ve decided to say we’re in a different situation to where we were last year, and tried to refuse to do anything!

I hope you get things sorted OP, is it the SENCO you’ve been speaking to or the class teacher? SENDIASS may be able to help you communicate with the school

Hankunamatata · 24/03/2021 18:10

Are the school saying he needs a specialist placement in a special school? If so the should be applying for an echp.

lifeturnsonadime · 24/03/2021 18:16

Apply for EHCP, school should assist you, if not you can apply yourself.

Sometimes the differences in need become more apparent the older the child gets so it may be that your child was coping better in the early years in mainstream but now it is becoming apparent to school that they need more specialist help. It is good if school is recognising it now.

It is definitely a good idea to sort this in primary school. I'd arrange a meeting with the school senco to devise a joint plan of action. In the meantime if you are on facebook there may be a local SEN closed group to speak to other parents and to start considering education options for your child for the future.

lifeturnsonadime · 24/03/2021 18:17

p.s. you are not a shit mum or an idiot. I have two kids with SEN who managed really well in the early years and then struggled. Don't be hard on yourself.

Mumofsend · 24/03/2021 20:53

@WetWeekends usually as it then helps them avoid providing the necessary support. All of my DD's paperwork provided by school was excellent but they desperately needed the funding for her, I've heard leas great things from parents of children who aren't causing an issue.

Lougle · 24/03/2021 21:16

No child been be permanently placed in a special school without an EHCP. Sometimes, rarely, a child can be taken on an assessment basis, but that is normally because they had a sudden emergence of need/change in health and an EHCP is pending.

You can apply for an assessment of his special needs yourself. Look up the 'SEN code of practice' and you'll see that anyone can bring a child to the attention of the Local Authority.

Regardless, the school need to be helping your DS now so start being the squeaky wheel. Ask for him to be given an individual education plan (IEP) to address the areas he is behind in.

WetWeekends · 24/03/2021 23:45

Sorry to derail OP!
@Mumofsend Thanks for replying, my DC isn’t causing problems (for now) so I guess that’ll be why. The SENCO said they’d changed their mind about getting the Ed Psych in to assess him after his diagnosis of ASD because “the class teacher isn’t struggling to deal with him”. That pissed me off because he’s certainly struggling to deal with school!

WetWeekends · 24/03/2021 23:47

OP I absolutely agree with a PP that you are not a shit Mum! You weren’t to know what they weren’t telling you. The fault lies with our government who don’t fund SEN provision in schools adequately.

Desperatelyseekinganame · 25/03/2021 00:46

You are not a bad mum and it sounds like this has been handled terribly by school. Your child has the right to mainstream inclusive education and noone can take that away from him. What have school done to support him, they need to be clear about this. If they are saying he is behind, is he on the SEN register, what additional help is he being given, is it daily? I think it sounds like you would benefit from meeting with Senco who can talk you through some of this and maybe unskill staff member who spoke with you? Good luck.
