How much debt are you in?

Following on from the savings thread, how much debt are you in?

Not including mortgage but including student loans, car finance etc.

I’m not in any debt but haven’t got much in savings either!

overpaying by £500 per month can knock years off. Maybe even pay it off by 40 to 50 years old

Oh that's OK then. (Not really, that near enough triples my mortgage)

Ferrylights · 24/03/2021 16:00

Nothing, not a bean...for which I am very grateful

joystir59 · 24/03/2021 16:01

None, no mortgage either.

StarCourt · 24/03/2021 16:01

A few hundred on a credit card

ContractClockAndCrucible · 24/03/2021 16:05

Strange thread. "I'm not in any debt, but tell me about yours." That's a bit like "I don't have any fertility issues (3 DC) but tell me about yours."

shiningstar2 · 24/03/2021 16:27

£800 on an interest free credit card. Approx £2500 left on interest free credit for sofas and a carpet so approx £3300. I pay £200 per month off credit card so will be clear in 4 months. The other credit has about 18 months to go. Won't spend anything else on credit for the home until the current credit is cleared. Might spend on the credit card again if holidays abroad ever become a realistic proposition as always pay the deposit on credit card as it gives another option for refunds if things go pear shaped.

Yes very very odd

Small Mortgage

I'm a first year student, so a years worth of student loans

£700 on credit card which I'll pay off in full next year

MolyHolyGuacamole · 24/03/2021 16:41

Just under £5K on a credit card. Just making minimum payments each month.

MolyHolyGuacamole · 24/03/2021 16:46

No one is obliged to read or respond. And no one is appointed moral police on what's an ok question to ask.

And no, I don't 'feel shit' by what other people type on the internet. Comparison is the thief of joy

NewYearmorestress · 24/03/2021 16:50

More than some, less than others.

Etulosba · 24/03/2021 16:51

I'm not. I have no debts at all.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 24/03/2021 16:55

None. I didn't go to university and don't own a car. All I have is a mortgage.

I earn minimum wage.

BigPaperBag · 24/03/2021 16:55

£9649.07 across 3 credit cards but I can genuinely say I’m not bothered. DH and I paid the final instalment of our loan yesterday which frees up £476 a month extra for CC repayments. He owes around £5k. At the rate we’re going, we’ll only owe our mortgage in 18 months 💗💗

SpeckledyHen · 24/03/2021 16:58

Nothing . But then I’m old . If you had asked 20 years ago it would have been very different . A pointless thread .

excuseforfights · 24/03/2021 17:03

Just mortgage. Splitting from DH so will have sole responsibility for mortgage going forward. It's daunting, the thought of losing my job and not being able to make repayments is scary. House is in London so not a small mortgage. Savings will be wiped out.

Sunflowers095 · 24/03/2021 17:05

@mummywithhermini

None of your goady business op.
It's an anonymous forum get a grip. If you don't want to answer you don't have to?

I like financial threads because it's a benchmark - for example how much money do most people spend on their mortgage proportionally? How much savings should an average adult have?

How are we supposed to figure this out when no one ever wants to talk about money. If to you it's sensitive then no one is forcing you to participate.

Primero · 24/03/2021 17:10

None. I went to uni when it was free. I paid off my mortgage a few years ago. I've never ever bought anything on finance. If I cant afford it, I do without.

willithappen · 24/03/2021 17:12

Not sure why people are so annoyed at this question being asked. You don't have to answer

Reading those who do choose to share can actually help other people. If you see you are not alone with being in debt and can chat about it with others, even on a forum, it can really help.

It helps me to read anyway.

I'm 28. I still have a £2000 overdraft that I got when I was at uni (still no idea why I was given this much) never had to pay interest on it so I have never attempted to pay back. However, starting to pay that off this month. I actually got a second job part time so that the money I make from there can go to paying off my outstanding debt

I have a credit card of £500 limit, all paid off last month. Making minimal spends on it to keep a payment track for credit file

Early 20s I was so bad with money and got myself in a bad situation with payday loans and store credit. I currently have defaults that hadn't been paid off, due to expire in a year but hadn't paid off. Very scared of a ccj coming on those so have started to pay them off too. Got one settled last month. I will be able to settle another this Friday with pay and then I will have £1500 left on a Lowell account to pay still

I also have an Amigo loan 🤡 loan of £1750 and I am paying back almost double that. Something is going on with them though with a scheme they are entering. Not sure, I put my complaint in and waiting it out. I have paid back the full £1750 so now my payments are for interest still.

So yeah, been really bad with money but I feel I am getting myself in a really good spot now. With the part time job I hope to be free of most of those debt in the nest three months! Glad I got the second job to pay it off rather than sit and wallow in self pitty like I had been!

ShanghaiDiva · 24/03/2021 17:13

None.
Have never had any and have a seven figure sum in savings.
Is this helpful to you????

flapjackfairy · 24/03/2021 17:13

@CaptainVanesHair
I am sorry you are having such a tough time of it right now.
I hope things look up for you soon and there are better days ahead x

...sounds like you have been SO lucky with the timing of your opportunities - free education and no doubt cheaper housing relative to your salary at the time you bought....it really is much tougher for the generations that have followed in terms of stagnating wages, soaring house prices, job instability, heavy loans for university.
PattyPan · 24/03/2021 17:19

@Primero Envy < actual envy from looking at £68k student loan balance

Primero · 24/03/2021 17:19

Vixivixen. I am aware I have benefited from a certain degree of luck. But everyone my generation benefited from free education. Paying off the mortgage wasnt lucky. I just kept paying for the term of the mortgage. I suppose I was lucky to get on the housing ladder in the first place, but it wasnt at a time when prices were rock bottom. As for not buying anything unless I have the money to pay for it, that was a state of mind more than anything else. I have done without things over the years, believe me.

FabulouslyFunny · 24/03/2021 17:24

Hmmm Hmm
