AIBU to expect the neighbours to shut their dog up?

Neighbours have two dogs. They seem to let them out to play in their garden early on a morning and leave them out there most of the day. One dog is fine, if it sees us it just stands wagging its tail. The other barks from the moment we go in our garden until shortly after we leave it. Every single time. Atm I'm only going out to peg washing out and potter, but it gets on my nerves now; it will drive me nuts when I want to sit out.

Have tried talking to the dog in a friendly fashion but it just carries on barking. Have tried telling it to shut up, same - although sometimes this will prompt one of the owners to come out and tell it to shush by making a fuss of it - briefly - then they go back in and leave it to resume barking - their tone is very much along the lines of 'oh did the mean neighbour tell you stop barking.'

I have no idea how to get this dog to shush.

Record the times and duration for future use should you need to go council route.

Despite what mumsnet will tell you, they absolutely are interested in constantly barking dogs that stop people enjoying the use of their home.

My stance would always be to try talk to the folk first, but let's be honest if they're telling the dog 'did that mean lady tell you stop barking' kind of thing then they don't give a shit about you.

And from experience, in real life and the mumsnet standard, barely anyone gives a fuck about their impact on anyone until the council get involved and make it official.

I write this as someone who has a neighbour whos dog screams and howls whenever she leaves the flat (yes even at 1am, and it can be heard at the opposite side of our flat, no escaping it), and a big fuck off dog on the road that the owners put outside for it to constantly bark for hours on end, in full company of the owners whilst they're pottering about their garden .

Occasionally they get the hint by the neighbours windows slamming shut and squawk at it to shut up. It doesn't.

The other weirdo just stands by and lets the rat of a thing also bark constantly when she is home. I would have reported at least one of the fuckers but I'm moving anyway. The stupid dog owners, and person next to us who likes to light fires at 4pm, blast radio so loud you can't hear your own voice when outside, and shouts for normal conversation (and you can hear them when you're inside clear as day, word for word) and spends the summer revving motorbikes for hours in the garden, are the absolute reason. Latter person knows they're a pain in the arse, spoils everyones enjoyment of their garden too because there is not a sunny day they aren't doing this, and has clearly told people they don't give a fuck and has threatened people for complaining to them they're noisy.

And yes I'm a dog owner. And no, it doesn't bark. Yes I have camera/audio for when I'm out of the house to check dog is settled and not fretting. It's not hard to train to be honest.

So, I'm going to be very unmumsnetty and say don't bother even trying. Your idea of suggesting a way for their dogs to get used to you is a brilliant and polite way of going about it, and perhaps is a worth a shot. But otherwise I'd just go heavy handed.

People like this fuck me the hell off. And you can bet they're mumsnetters too. No way is anybody this unaware of what an annoying selfish person they are.

your dog doesn't seem to like me being in my garden

Don't say that. You make it sound like you are the problem. You are not, they are.
I'd tell them it's unpleasant to listen to dogs barking all day and it's spoiling your enjoyment of your garden.

@Flowerlane

How can they see you is there a gap in the fence you can fill? Or some kind of trellis with greenery to put up so their view is blocked?
they hear me, as soon as I start walking down the garden

Thanks for all the helpful suggestions, I'll get working on them and fingers crossed one of them will help... .

@skirk64 Utterly cruel. This isn't the dogs fault! Upsetting it further by creating an awful noise will create more problems. It could increase the barking, if that's possible,

Stellaris22 · 24/03/2021 22:07

Agreed. Punishing the dog for the owners lack of proper care is highly unfair. The dog clearly wants attention, exercise and stimulation but isn't getting this. The barking will be very stressful for the dog.

Our dog barks at squirrels and hedgehogs if she can so at night we take her out on the lead in the garden for her wee. During the day she goes out when she wants, but gets brought straight back in if she barks at people she sees on the public footpath in the distance. It's very antisocial so we don't let her do it.

You can also contact your local council who will send them a letter about the noise nuisance.

Roselilly36 · 25/03/2021 08:12

Have you lived there long OP? Usually dogs get used to a neighbours noise/movements and calm down after they realise they have nothing to fear.

The noise is getting you down and that is understandable,if you can’t enjoy your garden, I would have a conversation one last time with your neighbours, if things don’t improve, report to council is your best option.

I hope the situation improves soon for you.
