Do you ever call in sick when you are not?

Just a thought really. I'm sometimes tempted to call in sick, but would feel too guilty. Is an occasional sickie acceptable?

I feel guilty enough being off work when I am genuinely sick

Same here. Making the dreaded phone call. Sad

Duvet days...I believe you are allowed 3 a year by law

I wish people on this site would stop spouting made-up shite as law.

fucksat50 · 23/03/2021 22:10

Never

HeelsHandbagPerfumeCoffee · 23/03/2021 22:10

Agreement very much comes into it. You request it based on service need

I know. It’s woeful

When much younger and much less responsible, in a job I hated - yes, a couple of times. I didn't feel guilty in the least back then, but I've grown up a good bit since and I wouldn't do it now. In my current job I don't get sick pay so I'd need to be really quite unwell before I'd miss a day.

Sparklingbrook · 23/03/2021 22:11

I might go into work tomorrow and ask about my 3 duvet days I am allowed by law. See what they say. Grin

SocialistSloth · 23/03/2021 22:12

I have in the past and it was a pretty shitty thing of me to do. On the not so shitty side, I once had the sort of hangover that left me physically ill and I called in, told them I was sick with a hangover and asked if I could take it as a day's holiday rather than a sick day because it was my own fault that I was so ill.

Jenasaurus · 23/03/2021 22:13

When I was 17 I did this, I got seen in town by someone who reported me to my manager He called me intohis office asking why I was in town, I said I was going to Boots to collect my prescription but I knew he didnt beleive me. I am nearly 56 now and would not dream of doing a sickie now I beleive being caught out then stayed with me.

Chickydoo · 23/03/2021 22:13

Please do, report back verbatim
AliceMadHatter · 23/03/2021 22:14

No, I love my job and it's a small company. I get on well with the boss so why would I?

poppet131 · 23/03/2021 22:15

I definitely wouldn’t - I think it’d be unfair on my colleagues and I would be pretty annoyed if it was reversed.

ThatDamnKrampus · 23/03/2021 22:15

I have in the past but in hindsight realise that when I was doing that my mental health was poor. My husband works for a company that allows 5 unpaid 'duvet' days which you can take at anytime without it triggering an absence meeting/disciplinary or using up holiday entitlement.

lunalucie · 23/03/2021 22:16

Yes for my sanity and so have my colleagues. We work in retail and don't get paid for the first 3 days sick so it doesn't cost the company anything and people jump on the overtime so it's always covered.

IveMadeAHugeMistake · 23/03/2021 22:16

Never, and I wouldn't. I'm funny about lying AND about phone calls, so for me the thought of (a) making a call and (b) lying on that call would be more stressful than just showing up to work!

I also just wouldn't, I dunno, I think it's wrong. If I need a duvet day I do it on my days off.

Lochmorlich · 23/03/2021 22:17

There's no difference between deliberately defrauding your employer and stealing imo.
Your gaining money by deception.

Lochmorlich · 23/03/2021 22:17

You're

allthegoodusernameshavegone · 23/03/2021 22:19

100 % no I never would, the stress of being off and knowing what I was going to have to catch up on would actually make me sick.

Sparklingbrook · 23/03/2021 22:19

Can you not have your duvet day at the weekend or on the days you don't work? Confused Or does that not count? It has to be a day you need to be in work?

ThanksItHasPockets · 23/03/2021 22:20

No. I’m a teacher and it’s more work to be off.

Fridacaninelo · 23/03/2021 22:21

Oh god yes, used to do it all the time when I worked in an office and have to commute.

Worked from home six years now and only two sick days.

VerySmileySarah · 23/03/2021 22:22

When I was in my teens & twenties I did quite a bit plus lots of hangover days. Now I really enjoy my job so I haven’t wanted to or needed to. Never say never though.

Racoonworld · 23/03/2021 22:22

No, I’m always too worried to take a sick day, even when I need it. I haven’t had a day off sick in years. I’m worried people won’t think I’m sick and worried about the work I’m not doing. I suffer from anxiety, I wish I could take one when I need to.
