Do you ever call in sick when you are not?

Just a thought really. I'm sometimes tempted to call in sick, but would feel too guilty. Is an occasional sickie acceptable?

OP posts:

never have. I feel guilty even when I've had to. Last sick day was over a year ago when I had a kidney infection.

whattocallhim · 23/03/2021 20:28

No I'd feel too guilty and wouldn't enjoy it. I've occasionally been on a sick note and could have gone back a day or 2 earlier, but would have had to see the doc first to get passed so haven't bothered.

MaryIsA · 23/03/2021 20:28

Duvet days...I believe you are allowed 3 a year by law.

My issue is I live somewhere small so I have to stay in if I call in sick. Even when I am sick.

QueenofLouisiana · 23/03/2021 20:30

No, getting cover for a class causes mayhem. I value my colleagues too much to do that to them.

BellsaRinging · 23/03/2021 20:30

No, I would feel guilty because I know someone else in the team would have to cover my work. I leave sick days for when I am actually sick.

Strokethefurrywall · 23/03/2021 20:30

No but I enjoy my job and have a team to manage.

That being said, I've had days where I've completely burnt myself out mentally and I need to either sleep or chill on the couch but I think I've done that once in 2 years.

But no pulling a sickie for shits and giggles etc.

flashbac · 23/03/2021 20:31

No, it's theft.

@MaryisA what law and which country? Sounds barmy.

transformandriseup · 23/03/2021 20:31

When I first started work the companies I worked for only paid SSP so I couldn't afford to call in sick. Where I have worked for last few years do offer full pay for sick days but then I would have to catch up on my work when I was back so it would be pointless.

Strokethefurrywall · 23/03/2021 20:32

I meant to end my comment by saying that I think I would probably be more inclined to pull sickies I was in a job that I hated or didn't feel I was supported well.

Then my mindset would be far more "fuck it".

FoofOfTheWalkingDead · 23/03/2021 20:32

I used to, all the time. Then in my mid 30s I started taking anti-depressants and I just stopped. So maybe they weren't 'sickies' as such but I felt very guilty and then anxious that I'd get found out. I think a sickie here or there is acceptable.

Jumpers268 · 23/03/2021 20:32

Yes! Not often but sometimes you just need a duvet day. It'd be me that has to make up my work when I'm back so I choose carefully but no judgement to pulling a sickie 😊.

LEMtheoriginal · 23/03/2021 20:32

Never. I think the only time that would be acceptable is to protect mental health.

GrumpyHoonMain · 23/03/2021 20:33

Even before Lockdown wfh was flexible enough to allow duvet days - I would just stay in bed with my laptop, only answering important emails.

IHaveBrilloHair · 23/03/2021 20:33

I've done that, I assumed most people had at some point in their lives.

FishWithoutABike · 23/03/2021 20:33

No not these days. Used to have hang over days in my youth though.

mineofuselessinformation · 23/03/2021 20:34

No - because in my job, calling in sick involves a phone call and then an email detailing what should be done, in a format which is accessible. It's not strictly legal, but expected.
Going through the whole process takes around two hours, so it's enough to put you off unless you're really unwell.

Florelei · 23/03/2021 20:34

Absolutely not. I haven’t the time!

Epic!!!

What country is this the law in Coz I’m moving

Twickerhun · 23/03/2021 20:35

And no, I’ve called in sick when I could probably have gone in but I wasn’t sure - that’s about as far as I could go

MrsBDarcy · 23/03/2021 20:35

Never have. Struggle to take a sick day unless really poorly.

silverbubbles · 23/03/2021 20:36

I have called in sick when my kids have been ill. I think its more acceptable for me to be ill than take a day off caring for a sick child.

HelplessProcrastinator · 23/03/2021 20:36

I haven’t since the odd day in my early 20s. No point now as I have to catch up with the work when I return anyway.

What????

No.

What law, where? There’s sadly no entitlement to duvet days in English law.

Chimeraforce · 23/03/2021 20:39

Used to in my teens.
Don't now. I've improved alot since having a child. I save sickness for Her sick days so I'll just mainline meds for myself to get through.
