Weird skull ???????

Toffeepopcorn11011 · 22/03/2021 21:56

Really random but does anyone else have a giant groove/dent down the middle of their skull? Mine runs from the top of my head down to the base of my skull and is about 2cm deep- I only felt it by chance and now I can’t stop feeling it Grin I’ve asked my friends & family but nobody else has anything like thisConfused does anyone have any idea what this is??? And more importantly, is it normal??? Grin I know nobody has a perfectly round head but this isn’t a small bump or groove, it’s a deep vertical dent.

TIA!

When babies are born their skulls are in four pieces(?) or something like that. It's not one full piece.

That's so their heads can be squeezed out of a tight space basically.

The four pieces are supposed to fuse together into one smooth skull.

I guess yours didn't for some reason.

Weird that you just noticed? How have you not noticed before?!?

No idea how common it is...

B33Fr33 · 22/03/2021 22:02

There is a slight dent at the back of my skull, a depression where the bones fused. Not 2cm in depth though, that's huge!

Penistoe · 22/03/2021 22:05

The above poster is correct that this could be from your baby scull not joining properly. However if you have only just noticed it then it may indicate it is a new issue, in which case see your GP to get it checked out as it ‘could’ be a symptom of something serious.

wheresmymojo · 22/03/2021 22:06

I mean...I would definitely want to talk to my GP about it.

2cm is a lot...and if it really is the case that the skull bones haven't fused properly I'd be worried that I could be quite susceptible to head injuries.

Did your parents not notice when you were a small child?

Elouera · 22/03/2021 22:07

How how have never felt a 2cm deep grove in your head when washing your hair, brushing hair etc!!! Surely your parents/midwife/health visitor/GP would have seen this when you were young!?!

As another poster said, when you are born, the scull has sutures lines and multiple bony plates which move to allow birth, but fuse into a scull as your get older. If yours is indeed with such a dent, its just fused in a different way to the norm.

Toffeepopcorn11011 · 22/03/2021 22:08

That is really interesting, thanks for the information! I had heard about soft spots (?) and I wasn’t sure if this was maybe just where one of mine had closed incorrectly. Very strange!

I couldn’t believe it when I felt it, and I don’t know how I’ve got this far in my life without noticing it before! I’ve always thought that I had a bumpy skull but I only noticed the groove recently- shows how unobservant I am!

Ah I meant to put 1cm and accidentally put 2 sorry that was a typoBlush it’s about 1 cm deep (I really should be wearing my glasses!Wink)

Toffeepopcorn11011 · 22/03/2021 22:11

Sorry 2 was a typo, I’ll try and get it changed (if I can do that)- it was supposed to be 1cmBlush

I actually remember when I was a child my mum said I had a wonky head and when she was brushing my hair she would joke about how my head was all miss-shaped. It was a running joke between us! I didn’t appreciate this groove until recently. I’m sure I must have noticed it before this point, I think it just felt normal for me and so I didn’t actually recognise that it was possibly unusual!

Toffeepopcorn11011 · 22/03/2021 22:21

I’ve been doing a bit of Googling (worst thing for anything health related I knowBlush) and the area of the dent matches up exactly with the Sagittal suture so I think everyone is right that it’s something to do with my head forming as a baby.

I’ve always had a slightly wonky head and it was just a running joke between my mum and me, but I don’t think my brain was actually recognising it when I was touching my head because it’s just normal for me and (I think) it’s always been there.

I felt it randomly recently and the first that came in my head was ‘oh that’s just my wonky head’ then the more I kept feeling it, it was like I recognised that actually it’s a bit strange! It’s rock hard and just feels like the rest of my skull, just extremely dipped.

It’s never caused me any problems before but I remember a as a child my mum had a nightmare of a job getting me a bike helmet that fitted properly- it just became a running joke that I have a strange head but I was never unwell so never went to the GP for it etc.

I know nobody is reading this anymore but I’ll update anywayGrin Going to give my GP a call and ask if this is normal. I can’t find anything online related to an adult skull being misshapen and what it could be. If anyone else reads this and has any experience or knowledge please comment!

Toffeepopcorn11011 · 23/03/2021 13:55

Just to clarify my above comment, I can find information online about the soft spots not being developed properly, but I can’t find any medical information about it related to adult skulls and if it’s a problem or not.

I have similar, running family joke being that when I was a baby the girls from my sister's school over the road used to come to see the baby and poke their fingers in my fontanelle

Chanjer · 23/03/2021 14:00

You definitely shouldn't still have any soft spots still. With me you can just see the lines where it joins

Chanjer · 23/03/2021 14:04

And yes afaik it's not a problem.

Some cultures used to practice a thing called trepanning and for a while it was done by hippy types in America as a means to increase brain blood volume, which I've always found kinda fascinating but apparently the dangers of doing it centred around the hole cutting operation itself rather than the drawbacks of having a hole in your skull

Nets888 · 23/03/2021 14:23

@Toffeepopcorn11011, please update when you see your doctor. I'm interested what this could be, if you don't mind.

FOJN · 23/03/2021 14:29

It's surprising a hairdresser hasn't noticed and mentioned it to you. It will be interesting to see what your doctor says.

Thirtyysomething · 23/03/2021 14:30

I have exactly the same thing! I’ve also had the same issues as you regarding finding info online. I found it about a month ago but I have no idea if it’s new or has always been there... I’ve had a nightmare getting through to my doctor but your post has spurred me on to keep calling.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 23/03/2021 14:34

It could be that you are a lizard and the groove is the result of your 'frill' being removed at birth.

I have a dent to the left hand side of my forehead. It's been there a good few years. I showed it to a Dr once who didn't seem bothered by it. At a guess I banged it which is possible as I've banged my head in that area quite a few times in the past.
