Coffee pod machines

Can anyone recommend one with supermarket own brand compatible pods please? What do you like about it/do you find it expensive etc. Don’t want to buy a machine and be completely stuck with buying expensive coffee pods and no choice of cheaper brands. Thanks

Nespresso machine. Even Aldi sell compatible pods.

Orchidflower1 · 21/03/2021 23:22

I can’t recommend one as such but I can suggest one NOT to get. We have a tassimo and there are never any cheep pods around. Aldi and Lidl to copies of other brands.

Orchidflower1 · 21/03/2021 23:22

Cheep 🤣they don’t make a lot of noise either ......cheap! sorry predictive text!

doubleshotespresso · 21/03/2021 23:24

Nespresso most definitely. All major supermarkets do the capsules hoc are compatible....
you want the original shaped pods - taste is way better and more freely available than the new dome shaped ones.

Crimeismymiddlename · 21/03/2021 23:25

Nespresso. Pods to be found everywhere. The best cheap ones are the Aldi ‘best’ brand and the Sainsbury’s finest. Or the Starbucks brand are nice but a bit pricier. I normally go for the N’or brand-really nice and reasonable price.

Oops just realised there’s voting...meant to post this in chat Confused
Thanks for replies! Orchid flower i had thought as much with tassimo to be honest, which is a shame because they do a great range of flavoured coffee/hot choc pods.
@NewPapaGuinea there are so many different nespresso machines I’m overwhelmed with the choice 😆 what do you have?

I'd second Nespresso, everywhere does compatible pods. I think you can get refillable ones on ebay too.

They do a machine for a pound thing though when you take out a subscription, worth doing the sums to figure out if supermarket version + buy coffee machine is cheaper than machine for a quid +nespresso coffee.

NewPapaGuinea · 21/03/2021 23:31

I have a U, made by magimix (Krupps also made same model with slight differences). Does the job.

So much single-use packaging though! You can’t be persuaded to go the French Press route? You never need to worry about compatibility or cost!

Nespresso pods are recyclable and they even collect them from you

Or Aeropress. Almost as quick/convenient as a Nespresso, but much cheaper and environmentally friendly. Best if you have a kettle you can control the temperature with though as 85c is the recommended temperature so not to scold the coffee.
Shopaholic100 · 21/03/2021 23:47

Nespresso vertuo pods can only be bought online.

maxelly · 21/03/2021 23:48

Nespresso branded pods are recyclable, but it's still a very energy intensive process to make the pods in the first place, and then to clean and recycle them so not a particularly eco option, putting aside all the other environmental and ethical issues with Nestle as a brand. Besides the OP specifically said she wants to buy supermarket own brand pods which are not recyclable. You can get refillable pods but I find them extremely fiddly to use.

OP, I've recently given up on my nespresso machine, partially for the eco issues above but also I found even own brand pods expensive compared to buying ground coffee or beans, plus the coffee in mine always came out lukewarm. I swapped to a cafetiere initially and treated myself to a 2nd hand bean to cup machine at Christmas which is really great - a good reliable brand really isn't that much more than a pod machine and with the saving on the coffee itself I don't think it's a bad choice?

WitchesBritchesPumpkinPants · 21/03/2021 23:48

I have a Philips Senseo

I order the 'pads' (not pods) from stormbrew (they're disc shape, but like tea bags, so minimal waste/recycling. I love it SS I just add a splash of cream.

We have a Nespresso at work, I like that too but find recycling the pods a hassle & it still takes resources to recycle the pods-so I prefer the pads.

Friend has a Tassimo. The machine isn't great, the coffee isn't great, I hate their milk things & it's such a faff.

doubleshotespresso · 22/03/2021 00:15

I forgot earlier I think the Nespresso type pods in Aldi (possibly the best imho) are about £1.40 for 10 which is a great price and the quality and range is good. Sainsbury's pods are also very decent and they do bumper sized boxes

There's also moka pot! Compatible with every coffee in the world.
curtainleaf · 22/03/2021 00:41

I have a nespresso and I prefer good cafetière coffee instead. I'm a bit of a coffee snob and I find nespresso has a bit of a weird artificial taste. I don't know why. Plus the pods are very bad for the environment.

UrAWizHarry · 22/03/2021 00:43

They make shit coffee and are horrible for the environment. Even the recyclable ones as they still need to make and send the stupid things back and forth.

Get a french press or an aeropress.

safariboot · 22/03/2021 00:45

DM likes her Dolce Gusto. There are some third party pods but not many, nowhere near what Nespresso (original) has. And it's so much single use plastic. But it makes good coffee.
