To take a job on 12 hour shifts now that the children are grown

I’ve been offered a new job in a supervisory role in the same company I’ve been in for many years - something I’ve been wanting to get into for a while.

Thing is it’s going from days 9-5 to 12 hour shifts, days and nights but no weekends.

It’s a whopping 17k pay increase but DH is being a bit sulky about it (he thinks I’ll be too tired all the time and be moany 😒 and it means I won’t be around so much / will be slightly less flexible with holidays etc) and even adult DD thinks it’s ridiculous I’m thinking of taking it ‘at my age’ - 48.

They’ve made me doubt myself and my capabilities - no doubt I’ll get more tired but I’m sure I’ll survive and catch up on my sleep on my days off.

It’s a great opportunity but instead of being happy for me all im getting is negativity.

Should I really be reconsidering??

Great! 2 days a week to yourself!

museumum · 21/03/2021 20:26

48 is a perfect age to ramp up your career. Is this not when most men reach their career peak? Go for it.

Mamette · 21/03/2021 20:27

Do it! 17K is a great pay rise.

Rupertpenrysmistress · 21/03/2021 20:31

Go for it, that is a huge payrise. I do 12 hour shifts, no problems yes it is tiring but you adapt. I enjoy my days off more. I couldn't bear to work M-F 9-5. Congratulations too, and 48 is still young, you have plenty more years to work.

Sh05 · 21/03/2021 20:31

Go for it!
If it's something you've been working towards then don't let anyone make you turn it down

tipilass6 · 21/03/2021 20:33

Do it! Sounds like a great opportunity. I presume you'll be working less days in the week with the longer shifts which is a bonus too

LemonRoses · 21/03/2021 20:34

Ideal time to move on up. Is it five twelve hour shifts? A sixty hour week continually would be quite a lot. Is it really a 17k pay rise if you’re going from a standard 37.5 hours to 60 hours?

RandomMess · 21/03/2021 20:34

Absolutely take it, you have 20 years of working yet!

DH is worried he'll have to step and do more I reckon.

Topgearmate · 21/03/2021 20:40

No it still works out at an overall 37 hour week, some weeks you only work 2 shifts plus you accrue hours to take off on top of your rostered holidays. One week in three is the killer with 2 12 hour days, 2 12 hour nights then a double back to a 9 hour afternoon. The next two weeks you only work either 2 or 3 shifts. And no weekends at all.

Do it . I did it years ago and loved the money and the time off much more than the 5 day week 9-5 drudge .

Topgearmate · 21/03/2021 20:47

To be fair DH is great around the house anyway, I get loads of support there. He just doesn’t have any patience with me ‘moaning’ - I don’t think I moan, I just like to chat about things 🤣
He’s also a bit concerned that it will mean we will find it difficult to get gone off together, the plan was that once the children grew this would be ‘our’ time. He’s a shift worker too but looking at the patterns they don’t clash too much, in fact we will have more time together in the day as 2 nights a week I’ll be working whereas I’d only be in bed anyway!

Sounds great. Congratulations.Flowers

LemonRoses · 21/03/2021 20:54

In that case definitely go for it.

Topgearmate · 21/03/2021 20:59

Thanks for the congratulations, I may be sorry when I’m hanging out of my arse at 4am in the morning 😂

Take it, pile the extra money into your pension & retire sooner

UnsolicitedDickPic · 21/03/2021 21:11

£17k payrise! My DP would be kicking me out the door. 😂

Topgearmate · 21/03/2021 21:14

This is the plan! I reckon I can save the extra £1k a month easily.

The only question you should ask is....do you want to do it? There are a million what ifs everyday and if you want to do go for it! Were only here once and lifes to short for regrets you have YOUR life to live do what you want!

Kitkat151 · 21/03/2021 21:18

Well done! Take the job....you regret what you don’t do in life

Topgearmate · 21/03/2021 21:22

I definitely want the challenge, I know it will be outside my comfort zone for a while and I’ll have to learn pretty quickly but I also know I have the capability to do it, I just have to fake it till I make it!

Congratulations! Sounds like a fantastic opportunity.

BonnieDundee · 21/03/2021 22:01

A £17k payrise?.wow. that would totally change my life. Go for it if you want to

grassisjeweled · 21/03/2021 22:04

Sounds like your DH is not liking the idea of perhaps stepping up more with housework etc?

AnnaSW1 · 21/03/2021 22:09

The 12 hr shift part is great but the days and nights part really is hard and can waste days off.

MoiraNotRuby · 21/03/2021 22:11

Congratulations, you are amazing, you will do a great job!

Sorry your husband and daughter didn't say the same thing - I guess your family has kind of pigeon holed you.

Enjoy the career development and the money it brings!
