Only 5 years use out of a kitchen

I have been gifted £4K.

I want to use this money to re do our very old kitchen. An Ikea kitchen or something similar. I have worked out I could get all the units, flooring and work done for the £4K.
It is a small room, current kitchen is old. It was was here before the previous occupants moved it, but fairly new at that point. I'd guess it is 12 -15 years old. I think it is Wicks, so nothing fancy.

However if I buy a new kitchen it would only get 5 years use. We intend to do a large double storey extension in 5-6 years time which includes a more luxurious kitchen / diner.

So AIBU and wasteful to get a new, cheap-ish kitchen, just to use for the next 5-6 years?

(BTW I do appreciate that this is a silly dilemma)

Could your kitchen be temporarily improved by repainting doors, cheap vinyl floor tiles and similar for worktops?

I have seen this done for less than £200.

I would do it. It sounds like you can't bear your current kitchen and why live like that for five years. You may not even get the extension for multiple reasons. I wouldn't make decisions now based on that far ahead.

@TrickorTreacle

No it can't be brought forward unfortunately.

My DH and I want to pay equal amounts to for the big extension. He won't be able to save his share in less time, with an additional unrelated project we have going on as well.
It will also be the perfect time to have a huge job done then as both DC will have started school by then and be out of the house most of the day.

The money I have for this potential 5-6year kitchen is mine to spend as I like. And I already have my portion saved for the extension so I don't have to think about that, and I'll be able to save for any over-budget complications in the years coming as long as I'm relatively careful.

How awful is the current one? How realistic is the 5years until extension.

We have a hideous kitchen- 70s. Peeling wallpaper and ripped lino. The draws don't work, the worktop is chipped and peeling and warped. We've lived here 3.5years. It barely functions. We're having an extension next year (planning gained and builders booked in). I'm glad we didn't "refresh" the kitchen as planned when we moved in, it would have been a waste

If you got new units and appliances, why wouldn’t you be able to re-use them for your new kitchen? No way you’d have to put a whole kitchen in the bin and start again. Carcasses can be moved and appliances uninstalled and reinstalled. It’s just the worktop and splashback that you’d struggle to re-use and you could get wooden one from IKEA that you could give away after you’re finished with them.

Some people even sell their used kitchens (fully disassemble then reassemble in another house). You’d only have to move your new kitchen carcasses to your new extension.
