shuz1980 · 20/03/2021 07:51

Would ibu to not going into work today because of a really heavy period. I had coil removed a few days ago and period is so heavy im soaking through pads. If i go ill be having to go to the bathroom every 15 minutes to change pad. Im also tired with the amount of blood im losing. Is an heavy period reason enough to call in sick?

I agree that sounds very heavy bleeding - don’t go to work and seek medical help.
Sustained blood loss can make you very unwell. I was changing a pad every 20 mins with a miscarriage and blood pressure dropped very low and I nearly had a blood transfusion. Take care as ask for help xx

Rillington · 20/03/2021 08:18

You need to see a doctor if that's what you are losing. That's not normal.

Makingnumber2 · 20/03/2021 08:21

If you're soaking through more than 2 maxi pads an hour you need to go to A&E. I've just had a gynae surgery and this is what I was told. I know coil removal isn't surgery but it is a procedure I think you should be seen by a medical professional

Youngatheart00 · 20/03/2021 08:22

You don’t need to tell work the specific, precise reason. I agree with a PP up thread who said to state you had a medical procedure earlier in the week and are suffering some significant side effects.

When I’m really heavy I tend to use tampons and towels together, but flooding and clots can still be an issue and I’m not sure of the advice regarding tampons if you’ve just had the coil removed.

Murtaghjames · 20/03/2021 08:27

Yes, stay at home. I suffer with really heavy periods so I understand what you are going through. Take it easy today and rest Flowers

WillowSummerSloth · 20/03/2021 08:28

Stay home OP. If a man were bleeding this heavily, they would almost certainly stay home. Periods are a valid reason to rest if they are painful, heavy etc. I think we've been conditioned by the patriarchy to be ashamed and not talk about it and carry on regardless. Please take it easy and hope it settles soon x

AppleKatie · 20/03/2021 08:33

I agree with the advice to a) see a doctor b) not to tell work the precise reason.

And the pp who said ‘if you’re not exaggerating’ I think that’s a disgustingly sexist remark to make to a woman describing a frightening medical emergency. Why would she be exaggerating what is their to gain Confused.

SisterWendyBuckett · 20/03/2021 08:42

So sorry you're experiencing this. You definitely need to stay home today and speak to someone about the level of blood loss. Hope things ease up very soon.

tiredmum2468 · 20/03/2021 08:52

Please call 111 now and ask their advice that sounds horrendous and not normal
They might need to give you something to help with the clotting and then it'll calm down hopefully
In the meantime make sure you're drinking loads of water but definitely stay off work until it's sorted
I hope you feel better soon

shuz1980 · 20/03/2021 09:04

Thank you everyone. Have spoke to work and manager was absolutely brilliant about it. Not sure why I was stressing so much. The dr who removed coil did say I could experience heavy bleeding but not sure if she meant to this extent so im going to call 111 for some advice as the amount im loosing is concerning and doesn't seem to be slowing down. Thank you all again for advice and well wishes Thanks

Makingnumber2 · 20/03/2021 09:05

Glad your manager was understanding and hope bleeding slows/you see someone who can help sort it Flowers

Notavegan · 20/03/2021 09:07

I hope it eases off. Do call for advice though definitely. Glad you sorted it with work.

ToffeePennie · 20/03/2021 09:09

Stay home.
Not only does it help destigmatise periods and pain, it also demonstrates that you aren’t willing to sacrifice your work quality, which says more in my book.
Those of us who suffer PMDD often have to get our work rearranged/shift work around it, so why should you have to suffer!

HotSauceCommittee · 20/03/2021 09:12

I hope you're ok, OP x

Fussyeaternightmare · 20/03/2021 09:15

I hope 111 advise you to get seen, don’t minimise anything when you’re talking to them, just lay it out. We’re so socialised to minimise any female experiences medically and being apologetic for ‘making a fuss’

There was a thread a few years back where the poster was bleeding really heavily. She took the advice from the replies she was getting to seek help and ended up in hospital. It was late at night and the doctors basically told her if she’s just gone to bed to sleep on it, which is what she’d planned to do before she started her thread, she wouldn’t have woken up. Hers was an extreme case though and turned out she’d developed sepsis as a result of retained products from a missed miscarriage I think.

CodMouth · 20/03/2021 09:17

Definitely call 111. I didn’t experience that when I had my coil removed.

Worriedmummy82 · 20/03/2021 09:20

Yes it's a good enough reason. Although I'd be tempted to lie and say stomach upset depending on how supportive you think your manager will be.

mumwon · 20/03/2021 09:47

this isn't normal for coils being removed - I think you should talk to someone asap

Lullaby88 · 20/03/2021 09:47

Like others have stated seek medical attention. Cant wait till they normalise days off for women with period pains.

Beetlebum1981 · 20/03/2021 09:48

@shuz1980 it's good to hear you have such an understanding manager. Hope you get sorted.

thosetalesofunexpected · 20/03/2021 09:48

Please get medical help as soon as possible !

Its not normal to be bleeding as much as that !

Don't just put up accept this is just the way things are !

I used to have heavy periods blood clots and after a couple of extremly embarrassing accidents of once bleeding on my friends sofa, thankfully it was a leather one,
and another accident,
the thing is when you bleed so heavy as that too,
I wouldn't be susprised you are also suffer from very low iron deficiency,
Feeling lethargic, run down listless cause of feeling
,anaemic.!

I used to constantly worry,be parnoid about posibilith of bleeding into my clothes,

I could never where white or light coloured clothes ever on my period,

I eventually had the mirer coil ,
what a difference it made to my life Grin

mumwon · 20/03/2021 09:52

(I have used coils & the first one was before I had dc) did dr have difficulty removing it? It should only have been a bit uncomfortable not really painful when they removed it -although you may have bad cramps for a while. Yes you might have a heavy period but this sounds excessive - please ring dr,

Fussyeaternightmare · 20/03/2021 14:44

How are you now @shuz1980?
