To think there is NOWHERE where women can escape inappropriate comments

I'm on a Facebook fan group for a TV series and posted a comment about a prediction for the next series.

Can I point out

  • the prediction had nothing to do with sex, or females
  • The TV show does not feature sex
  • my comment was a completely ordinary comment, not in the least bit sexually provocative

And I had a man commenting "nothing to do with [TV show] but you're sexy, I'd love to fuck your brains out"

I've called him out and he's come back with a "whoa it's a joke I think you're ugly haha it was ironic" type post.

But FFS, is anywhere safe from these kind of men?! I can't even post about a TV show now without some creep coming along to spoil things. I've reported him and now blocked him but it's hardly the point. Don't feel like I can post in that group now and I was quite active. And with women-only spaces dwindling by the day (heaven forbid we don't accept men into our discussions, men who don't even want to join in but are affronted at being left out) it's harder to find anywhere IRL or online where we can have harrasment free spaces.

The behaviour of male posters is a problem in every mixed sex group I'm in - I'm in one disability support group where the admin was booted out of his own group for messaging the women!

IdblowJonSnow · 20/03/2021 01:02

I was in a neighbourhood online group. One woman complained that someone on it had asked her for her number or a date. The other men told her if she had a problem with that then she shouldn't be on the group. Which was predominantly asking for info about decorators or reporting crimes.

It's awful. You did right to call him out.

VampireTheBuffetSlayer · 20/03/2021 01:59

There was a post from John Lewis being a safe space for women and I posted that their changing rooms weren't a safe space. Some dick replied to my post saying that having looked at my profile pic I probably didn't have anything to worry about.

NiceGerbil · 20/03/2021 03:43

Places where there aren't any men?

NormanStangerson · 20/03/2021 03:58

What is it with men who behave inappropriately and then respond in the aggressive way you described, OP?

I was catcalled, ignored them, and then had abuse hurled at me that I was an ‘ugly cunt’, anyway. It was horrible, I felt attacked and I was furious they made me feel that way.

It’s like a despicable reaction to their perceived wounded pride and is probably at the bottom of the sliding scale of sexual violence.

JamesMiddletonsMarshmallows · 20/03/2021 09:33

I've just been called a Karen for calling him out 🙄

It’s not the Like of Duty page is it?

OhWhyNot · 20/03/2021 09:37

Spaces that are female only

As now apparently a women can have a penis Hmm

JamesMiddletonsMarshmallows · 20/03/2021 09:54

@NormanStangerson no, is that one bad?

I think you did exactly the right thing by calling him out. The more women who do it, the less likely these men are to think they’ll be able to get away with it if they try it. I also think it’s really important to publicly support other women when it happens to them.

Ignore whoever called you Karen. It’s a misogynistic way of telling women to shut up. Perhaps reply asking why they think it’s acceptable for men to talk to women like that? Please don’t let him stop you from posting on a site you enjoy. He doesn’t hold that much power over you.

vampirethriller · 20/03/2021 10:25

I put an ad on gumtree pre covid looking for cleaning/housekeeping work. First reply was from a man asking if I wanted to meet up and give him a blow job for money and make it a weekly thing.

Biancadelrioisback · 20/03/2021 10:28

I saw a horribly sexist comment on FB recently, basically talking about women as 'things' reserved for certain people or things to chose from.
Reported it to FB and it doesn't actually go against any of their guidelines.

thosetalesofunexpected · 20/03/2021 10:38

Does not shock me or susprise this happens on social media sites !

Hmm
CatsHairEverywhere · 20/03/2021 10:41

No where is safe from men, their inappropriate behaviour or their sleaze bag ways. Not even spaces that should be female only anymore.

Weirdfan · 20/03/2021 10:53

I'm on a MH support group on FB where not messaging/hitting on other members is the number one rule, it's made crystal clear when you join and agree to the rules and there are reminders almost daily. They still have to remove at least one man a day for breaking the rule, on a fucking MH group ffs Angry I've had it with NAMALT, maybe not all but the vast majority are absolutely 'like that'.

OhWhyNot · 20/03/2021 10:59

I absolutely agree. I find the worse are who truly believe they are understanding, supportive of women and then either once your guard is down or they decide their is an attraction the male entitlement side shows but what’s worse is they can not recognise this

Notanotherhun · 20/03/2021 11:29

I'm 34, I can honestly say I am baffled by all these men. Where are they? I have had no dealings with this sort of thing. Is it all not becoming a bit of twitter storm that doesn't mirror the real lives of the silent majority?

NotJustAnyOldDog · 20/03/2021 11:43

I’m a primary school teacher. It’s all women except two gay men and it’s lovely!

OhWhyNot · 20/03/2021 11:44

I would be very very surprised if you spoke openly with your female friends and they hadn’t been subjected to sexism, male entitlement, sexual harassment or some form of sexual violence

As it’s been played down since, well that’s hard to establish when, but certainly since the time how we live has been documented (by mainly men) we have documentation of sexist attitudes and violence towards women that was considered acceptable. It’s not surprising that many women do not recognise lower level everyday sexism abs still dismiss harassment as just one of those things men do
