hello. i am a disabled person who wonders about the safety for pedestrians once all vehicles become electric. i am visually impaired so i rely on my hearing. i walk with a white stick. all these vehicles do appear to be very quiet meaning you may hear what seems like a quiet engine and step out to cross a road thinking it's clear to walk over the road. nobody seems to think or be talking about this. aibu to think more should be talked about to help this situation? you must have elderly relatives or a disabled dc what do you think? we seem blinded by the green issue rather than the overall situation that faces people daily.

Definitely don't want mouse noise added

That is a selfish attitude.

I'm sure technology can be created so you are safe too

It has. It's called "adding sound"

There was a thread like this a couple of years ago. One poster said they turned the sound off on theirs because they liked the silence and that it was other people's problem if this was dangerous to them.

If DH, who is partially deaf, gets run over I'll make sure he knows it's his fault!
SoupDragon · 20/03/2021 15:14

Yes. He should be looking IIRC

SoupDragon · 20/03/2021 15:31

I've found the thread. Here is one choice quote:

When you switch the warning sound off, you are behaving like a selfish idiot

Then I look forward to you bouncing off my bonnet in the near future when you cross the road without paying attention.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 20/03/2021 15:38

That's awful. What about those who are blind? While DH can look where he's going it's a bit difficult for them. It shouldn't be possible to switch off the warning sound

I think hydrogen fuel cells will be the way to go, or if it can be used in a tank in the boot as LPG can be, then that would make it easier.

You do know that almost all hydrogen is produced by steam reformation of methane (natural gas)? Not a particularly green process.

The overall efficiency of a hydrogen fuel cell vehicle is even lower than one with an internal combustion engine.

its because i am blind i made this thread because the prospect of such silence from these new vehicles gave me the willies. also would hate to have to rely on others to get out and about simply because it was no longer safe for me to venture out alone due to these cars. but most posters have put my mind at rest telling me that it will be a requirement to have a certain amount of sound which until now i had no idea. i think you just look at your own situation. i get cabs if i am going into the city to a particular place and because the engine switches off it would be easy for me to be standing there waiting for a cab which is there waiting for me just to jump in. its only because of the call back you get on your phone when you make a booking that alerts me to the possibility he is waiting so i come out the flat and walk to where they park put out a hand to see if i can touch anything. tbf though because i use the same company most drivers are good and will get out and help me once they see i have a white cane. even during covid times with social distancing they have been good with me
