I'm classed as an essential worker. Normally I commute into London. I've tried to WFH as much as possible, but have had to come in occasionally. Came back in today for the first time since November. Despite it still being 'essential travel only', I've seen loads of people with suitcases, both my trains have been so full that you can't social distance (I'm currently sat directly behind two people who sat together in front of me because there aren't any other seats left, took their masks off and are drinking booze). It's also not a 'peak' time as such (we left London at 15:30).
Part of the problem is that the train company has cancelled loads of services and is now operating a one train an hour, calls at all stations, service because demand is so 'low'.
I have ASD and wearing a mask is very difficult for me (sensory overload - I can't go in shops any more as it's too much), but I do it on trains (appreciate not everyone can). I've also - when I have been going in - been getting up half an hour earlier than normal to eat breakfast before I get on the train, and arrive home starving hungry and thirsty, again forgoing the afternoon snack I would normally have. Yet in the last year there are loads of people not wearing masks, or eating / drinking (honestly this afternoon half the train was eating or drinking as I walked down the platform looking for a spare seat, which I found in the front carriage) despite official guidance being not to eat or drink unless it's a medical need, e.g. diabetes. I find this upsetting as I've tried really hard, at extreme personal discomfort, to abide by the guidelines but so many people (not a small minority) seem not to give a shit in a confined space with no proper ventilation.
I want to know, have I been spectacularly unlucky, or is this common? I'm really missing lockdown #1 travel when I was often the only person in the carriage!
If it's just my area (Chiltern line) then I'll email the train company to request they look at it. I appreciate it's a difficult balance between having enough trains for social distancing and losing money from empty trains, but it feels like the balance isn't right atm.
To caveat: I know case rates are much lower now; I know instances of COVID-19 live virus being found on public transport are quite low; I appreciate this could just be my ASD brain hyper-focusing on stuff and getting wound up about it.
YABU - it's like this everywhere
YANBU - that sounds abnormal and you should politely email the train company to provide feedback
