Ammi being unreasonable to take on a full time (term time) role in a school 40 minutes in the opposite direction to my children’s school
It would mean the have to go to breakfast club & after school club every day
But id have every half term holiday off with them

For me, it would depend on my financial situation. If I could get away with it, I wouldn't. I don't have any particular objection to breakfast clubs, etc., but how will the dogs manage being home all day alone?

ComtesseDeSpair · 19/03/2021 11:24

If it means you’ll have unbroken school holiday time at home then I would. The hour or so immediately before and after school is hardly quality family time they’ll miss out on.

You’ll need a dog walker to drop in at least once a day, though. Do you live in an area where there are enough dog walkers for that to be possible?

1AngelicFruitCake · 19/03/2021 19:14

How would this be different to what you do now?

Maxellious · 19/03/2021 19:15

Most parents work full time all year round. Their children are absolutely fine.

Just make sure you put as much thought into how the dogs will cope: walkers, day care etc

Washimal · 19/03/2021 19:23

Several years ago I left a job that was part time all year round for a job that was full time, term time only. It was definitely the right decision. Not having to worry about finding or paying for childcare in the school holidays is a godsend. Also however stressful things are at work it feels manageable because you know that you're counting down 7/8 weeks at most until the next break. Having the whole summer off with the kids is lovely.
Never had a dog though so can't comment on that aspect.

Badgerstmary · 19/03/2021 21:45

I think it depends on how old your children are. It would be a very long day for a 4 yr old but ok for an older child.

SoWhyNot · 19/03/2021 21:46

I’d be concerned about the dogs, not the children. Could you get a walker for them?

Elieza · 19/03/2021 22:04

If they like these clubs and especially if their pals go there then they would enjoy it.

The dogs won’t enjoy being locked up all day with their little bladders bursting. How would you like it. So you’d need to get a dog walker.

So if you add the cost of the school clubs, your travel costs, and the dog walker....remembering to adjust any benefits you get in line with your new circumstances. Is it worth it?

PlanetPuddle · 19/03/2021 22:38

I was with you until you mentioned the dogs.

idontlikealdi · 19/03/2021 22:39

You'll be ina better situation than not with holidays, doggy day care for the dogs.

PlanetPuddle · 19/03/2021 22:42

It would be great as wouldn't need to worry about childcare in the holidays but you can't leave the dogs alone for that long.

purpleme12 · 19/03/2021 22:55

What job do you do now?
I've been thinking about this recently
I work part time all year round so pay for childcare on those days
But if I worked term time full time I'd have to pay after school at least every day and I worked out that's actually more expensive that way

Mummywith2 · 20/03/2021 07:36

Yes it actually would work out worse to be honest
Id be worse off and wouldn’t be kind to the dogs...
children are 5 & 8
Youngest is in reception so it may be a bit much for her

As much as I'd love to have those holidays off
I think this is what I'd base my answer on as well, the cost of childcare

Elieza · 20/03/2021 12:43

Hang in there for a similar job nearer home that you could go walk the dogs at lunch break and your children wouldn’t have to do wrap around care unless they wanted to some days as their pals were there.

DelurkingAJ · 20/03/2021 12:52

My DH is a teacher and I work FT so we essentially have this set up (minus dogs) and it’s amazing. We have a childminder rather than school clubs but DH covers all the holidays which means that we’re not constantly juggling holiday cover and also have the benefit of two wages.
