82 year old woman reported to police

For having a socially distanced cup of tea in the garden with 2 neighbours.
Honestly, who on earth would report somebody for this? It's hardly hundreds of people having a rave. Not sure what the world is coming to, the fact that the police actually travelled there and issued her with a warning too. An 82 year old for goodness sake.

@ImAncient

Ok I was under the impression they socially distanced? I’m trying to think what I would do? Would you need a rota? It’s years since I’ve had use of a communal garden.
We didn't have a rota, just used common sense.

I think outdoor socialising is clearly low risk but if we all just do what we want, that's how the virus spreads, 80 year olds included.

@Dragisnotacontactsport

I think maybe it's because an 82 year old may be very frail and something like a police visit could be very frightening.
Age is irrelevant, doesn't matter if she was 22.

I'm in total agreement that the police should not be investigating a cup of tea. I would rather they be patrolling streets and recreation grounds 24/7 to help keep everyone safe.

Yes its true sadly. Poor lady must have been so scared. Absolutely ridiculous and unnecessary!

ThatsNotTheTeaHunty · 19/03/2021 08:08

Would you feel the same if it were younger people?
I wouldn't report it but it is against the rules. Just because they had jabs (assuming they have) they can't bend and break the rules to suit them.

The rules are there for everyone.

The police really can’t win in this situation.

They investigate and people call it ridiculous and “clearly they have too many resources to squander”.

They don’t investigate and people know they won’t be stopped for rule breaking and will just carry on as they please.

The police didn’t come up with these rules. The government did and want the police to enforce them.

When 3 young blokes can walk all over my local Asda, all talking loudly with masks on their chins and not giving a fuck about social distancing - and staff are ‘unable’ (their words when I asked) to take any effective action, yes, it does seem ludicrous.

I hope the Stasi neighbour was pleased with him/herself.

The age doesn't matter. Elderly people can break the law just like anyone else.

The police had a report of a multiple person gathering, the police checked, no-one was arrested or fined because there was nothing wrong.

This is a total non-story.
