Is this natural with age?

At 24 I weighed 8 stone, now at 29 I weigh 9.5 stone. I don't eat more than I used to and I exercise a lot, though lockdown hasn't helped.
I'm still the same clothes size but definitely feel and look a bit bigger, have stomach fat that won't shift.
I've had no children, and as I said haven't changed my diet or anything.
Has this happened to anybody else as they got older? 1.5 stone seems like quite a lot.

How tall are you? I think that makes a difference in whether an extra stone or so makes a big change to how you look.

Cormoran · 18/03/2021 23:56

Of course it is normal. The body goes through metabolic changes as it age, including lipid turnover, so you need to make adjustment if you want to keep your figure.
It is totally doable and easier to fix when the weight gain is limited instead of severe.

RagzReturnsRebooted · 19/03/2021 00:01

Are you on any contraception or medications that may contribute? Health conditions? Metabolism does slow with age, but you're not even 30 so effect should be minimal.

9 stone in my teens, 10 stone in my twenties, 11 stone in my thirties, currently 14 stone in my forties. I had three kids in my late thirties so alot of my recent gain has been due to that. As kids are a bit older now, it's starting to come off. Realistically, I will be happy with 13 stone (I'm 5.10") in my late forties/ fifties.
Yes, it normal for most women.

Absolutely same here! 5'8. 9st and a bit my whole 20s, hit 30 and it went up to 10. 36 this year and it's 11 and a bit now - although some of that is emotional eating that I hope to god will come off when we are normal and I can do other things to try and cheer myself up besides drink wine and eat sour Colin caterpillars (not at the same time, I'm not a psychopath)

Op - it’s not age, in your case, I’d expect. I lost weight between 22 and 27 when I’d been normal weight before- because I was much more active (exercise but also walking a lot).
I’m a lot older than you - and short - and my bmi says I’m overweight (I am!) but I now have a much greater muscle mass than I did when younger.
Is it possible that there’s some more muscle in your case but maybe you need to change some parts of your diet (just to kick start your metabolism?).
I hear you when you say you are eating the same.. but are you?? I cut out fizzy drinks and crisps and chocolate a couple of years ago and looked better (got back into size 10 at 43 after 2 c-sections).
Just recently started eating crispy again- boom!! Big tummy (still the same weight though..). I’m trying to say could it be time to ditch “one thing” and see what happens??

SavannahLands · 19/03/2021 00:08

People who exercise a lot can often find that they start to put weight on as Muscle develops and tends to weigh more than Fat. Likewise, Women often weigh more at the end of their menstrual cycle just before their period starts due to the extra fluid retention.

Sweet666 · 19/03/2021 01:12

It's calories in calories out, no matter what age you are you gain weight if you eat over your TDEE and lose weight if you eat under it unless you have some type of extremely rare illness

alexdgr8 · 19/03/2021 01:37

? underactive thyroid ?

Dragisnotacontactsport · 19/03/2021 07:07

I do eat a lot of sugar and carbs, sad to say that I have a sugar addiction and it's really something I need to stop. I take the contraceptive pill but nothing else. I will try to improve my diet anyway.

OP I kept my teenage metabolism till I was about 25. A large chocolate doughnut was a daily thing.

Probably fell apart a bit earlier, in fact I think c26 I was thinking, where's all this weight coming from?! Sad but true.

speakout · 19/03/2021 07:24

Is it an age thing?

I am in my late 50s and haven't noticed.
I haven't weighed myself for around 10 years but still comfortable fit into size 10 clothing.
I exercise and don't eat much carbs.

Claudia84 · 19/03/2021 07:50

Not sure whether it’s an age thing but 1.5 stone between 24 and 29 isn’t that much when you think of it in terms of pounds a week or even pounds a month. So even the slightest ‘extra’ or change in lifestyle is obviously going to make a difference.
Early 20s I was out a lot, probably had more hungover days where I didn’t eat particularly well but also had less money for eating out, used public transport more etc. I remained the same rough size throughout my 20s and am now mid 30s but I weigh between 1 and 2 stone more. I’m determined to stick here!

CatFaceCats · 19/03/2021 07:54

I was pretty much the same, I’ve always been slim and petite.
8st until about 20, then that crept to 9 by my late 20’s.
2 children later, I’m almost 40 and sit between 10 and 10.5 stone. But admittedly just now I’m comfort eating and drinking more coupled with lack of exercise. I could probably be more toned and look a bit better (for myself!) if I could be bothered

Robostripes · 19/03/2021 08:07

Ha very similar to me! 9.5 stone in early twenties, crept up to 10 and then 10.5 by late twenties. I did lose my baby weight after having DS at 29 but now at 34 I’m almost 11 stone and right at the top of the healthy BMI range for my height - a pound or two away from the officially “overweight” category. Really need to sort it but I’m terrible at dieting, my will power lasts a matter of days!
