AIBU to feel workplaces are insensitive to employees when talking £££

I find it really hard not to make comments or passive aggessive digs when my boss talks about spending large sums of money on work related investments, as if it's of no consequence, whilst I sit there working out that expense as a proportion of my salary.

An example may be a cancelled business flight at thousands of pounds, just written off as not convenient etc. Or a 'nice to have' consultancy at a large daily rate. An expense claim that's more than I get paid in a month.

There are so many more I could list. Really peeves me, knowing I give so much more value than these silly expenditures. Making it known is probably doing me no favours, but I know I would always be more sensitive if ever in that position.

AIBU to be annoyed by this?

@clarkegriffin exactly this. Even if they don't boast as such, it's clear to see the profits. The latest trend to blame covid for no payrises/bonuses is going to wear thin with people too when they can clearly see a profit has still been made (in some companies)

Slightly different situation as a freelancer, but in my last project the overall budget was €36 million from which we were expected to achieve savings (globally) of €27 million meaning that we were "self-funding" the work required at €9 million. The self-funding was to include running global RFPs, vendor selection, procurement of hardware and services and roll-out. I doubt very much whether any of us in the team gave much thought to the budget or forecast savings in relation to our daily rates, which were comparatively "modest".

Usually this doesn't happen because my industry is more often than not cash strapped to the nth degree. For a long time I was unsympathetic to staff saying this because I knew (because I managed the budgets) that what sounded like a lot of money when offset against other costs really was not.

I got a huge lesson when I sat in a meeting for a job where I admit I'd been seduced to my lack of credit by all the financial perks. Fully loaded car , huge expense account and I had been turned (not a proud moment).

Anyway the CEO waxed lyrical about the new head office they were building for eye-watering amounts of money, that we could design our own offices etc etc. The money spent was huge , I knew the company was doing well. All was fine.

Until he announced that he was cutting the signing bonus for ground staff. These were the staff that made the money by actually doing the job (don't get me wrong I worked my backside off at 90 hours a week , calls at 2 am ridiculous travelling but I was extremely well paid for it and loads of personal and I was under no illusions who delivered the " real" work).

These staffs roles were relatively low paid (higher than industry standard but still low paid). They had recieved a £100 bonus for staying after recruitment. He stopped it. Not because he couldn't afford it but because he didn't see why he should anymore.

We all argued. Explained that they needed it , even explained that it would hit our recruitment.

Nope. Stopped it.

I resigned that night. This guy could have paid that bonus put of his own pocket and barely notice the dent. But no he cut it for just over minimum wage staff who he depended on. I did actually financially screw myself at the time , but honestly it was worth it. I have spent years understanding walking the line between debatable decisions and making choices that people saw as money grabbing. Even I had my limit.

Yeah I feel the same except I work for the NHS.
I have had £80k work of unused consumables sat under my desk for months (we have no other storage left).

We are using them because reasons but nobody can be bothered to resolve it or send them back or anything.

Gooo · 19/03/2021 13:48

Aren’t using them*

My boss chose to have my pay and compensation conversation (no pay rise - not even one in line with inflation) and very meagre bonus on a Zoom call with her huge new kitchen extension in the background.

Thought it was fairly tin-eared.
