To think this was ageist

I was sat on an interview panel, and all the applicants came onto teams at the same time for a welcome. Most were probs mid 30s one older lady maybe mid 50s, the lead interviewer said to all “looking around don’t be intimidated by the other applicants, like don’t think oh some look younger and more energetic...”

Now the older person looked embarrassed, but nothing was said, and I thought this was an awful comment to make.

Surely it’s inappropriate at best? And should I bring it up with HR?

Yes, it's inappropriate, and ageist, and patronising. It also has the effect of making you feel totally inadequate and embarrassed because you feel like you're looking like the crone in the corner.

KrisAkabusi · 18/03/2021 17:37

Were there others younger than their 30s?

OverTheRainbow88 · 18/03/2021 17:38

No, it was a role that needed a fair amount of experience so mid 30s was the youngest age as such

I guess he was trying to be helpful. I wouldn't automatically think it was malicious though, probably well-intentioned, but clumsy.

mbosnz · 18/03/2021 18:40

I'm sure it was well meaning, but oh dear!

Hollyhocksarenotmessy · 18/03/2021 18:48

Very inappropriate. It wouldn't have crossed my mind to be worried about being an older applicant, until he said that, then I would have felt very self conscious. More energetic? That's weird as well. Is it a role that needs an unusual amount of energy?

I think a quiet word would help. I guess he is a manager not an HR person? Fuck me, I've had them blithely say awful things in interviews, while thinking they were being helpful.

It was actually said by a woman. I have no doubt in my mind that no ill intent was meant and the person would be horrified if she cottoned on.

I am no way senior enough to raise it with her personally. But feel bad just letting it slide. As if it were a racist comment there’s no way I would remain silent.

It’s a job that requires a lot of energy both physically and mentally, but defo something someone mid 50s could do!!

YANBU and the person who said that needs to be told in no uncertain term that comments like that are unacceptable. I would definitely not let it slide, personally. No need to go in all guns blazing but someone needs to have a word with her.
