To ask cyclists to follow the rules!!!

summeriscomingsoon · 18/03/2021 16:14

Nearly hit by a cyclist going through a red light again as I was crossing the road. We have numerous offenders doing this.

Also going on the pavement to avoid traffic jams.

Cycling has increased so much since lockdown and great health benefits but some of them make me mad!!!

Aibu to expect them to behave as if they were a car on the road and stick to the rules.

YANBU. Selfish wankers.

YANBU

KoshkaKills · 18/03/2021 16:25

YANBU. DD nearly got hit by a bike that didn't stop at the red light.

DaisyWaldron · 18/03/2021 16:28

YANBU, but I generally get 10 cars narrowly missing me or not stopping for a red light for every bike that does, so I'd target the drivers before the cyclists.

PattyPan · 18/03/2021 16:43

Yanbu - good cyclists hate twats who run red light too. I wouldn’t say cyclists should behave like cars though - I’ve been nearly hit by cars not stopping at red lights or zebra crossings plenty of times. (Yes, it is compulsory to stop at a zebra crossing!)
Also some pavements are shared spaces so cyclists are allowed on those ones. They’re usually marked with a round blue sign where they start but that can be quite far off.

Couldn’t have put it better.
PattyPan · 18/03/2021 16:54

I’m guessing you don’t want cyclists to behave like these drivers in Enfield Wink mobile.twitter.com/GlennWilson92/status/1370404874622472195

The one today was a posh looking lady who looked like she was miss Marple cycling in a country village. This was in a busy city centre FFS! Totally oblivious

I'm way more concerned by drivers than cyclists.

TooBored1 · 18/03/2021 17:21

How about asking all people to follow the rules?

Every day, I see pedestrians stepping out without looking, I see cars jumping lights, speeding, going wrong way down the road, parking in the pavements etc etc. And yes, some cyclists break the rules too.

And let's not forget, the cyclist is probably a car driver too. And will be a pedestrian sometimes.

It's not about a particular GROUP needing to follow the rules, it's about PEOPLE needing to follow the rules.

Bubbinsmakesthree · 18/03/2021 17:22

YABU to want cyclists to behave like cars but YANBU to expect them to behave safely.

Ringshanks · 18/03/2021 17:23

I got knocked over by a cyclist who didn’t stop for a zebra crossing- she said she didn’t realise they applied to bikes! However she was quite upset and much more shaken than I was .

Tinydinosaur · 18/03/2021 17:24

YANBU I got hit crossing a road when a cyclist went through a red light. And have had to emergency break while driving for the same reason, or them just pulling out of junctions without giving way. And have been stuck going 3mph on a 2 mile country lane behind a pack of about 25 cyclists struggling to get up it.

Tinydinosaur · 18/03/2021 17:25

The cyclists round here are a bloody nightmare.

TooBored1 · 18/03/2021 17:27

The drivers around here are killers. Quite literally
LimaFoxtrotCharlie · 18/03/2021 17:28

YABU.

some cyclists break the rules. So do some motorists. So do some pedestrians

Yabu for this comment though - why shouldn’t elegant ladies cycle? And why not in the city centre when that’s where it makes the most sense to cycle? Confused
LoveFall · 18/03/2021 17:36

We have forest trails near us the take about three people walking abreast. Some but not all of the cyclists use them as commuter trails and travel very fast. Dh has almost been hit many times and I find it very startling to have someone shout "on your left" just as they race by. I don't know the solution but a bit less speed would help.

Beseigedbykillersquirrels · 18/03/2021 17:52

YANBU. Cyclists want it all ways. They want cycle lanes, so they build them. Then they don't use them but stay on the roads. They expect people to pootle along behind them as they cycle along on their merry way. No thought or consideration for anyone else who wants to get to work on time. However, they are not prepared to wait behind pedestrians on shared paths and often ring their twatty bells with the expectation that they will part like the red sea and let them through so they can continue on their merry way. I once was stuck behind a cyclist for miles and managed to overtake on the one stretch of road for five miles where it was safe to do so. I then waited at temporary traffic lights for a few moments and in that time, the cyclist had caught up to me, overtaken me at the lights and made sure I was stuck behind him again for the remaining miles of my journey. Why would anyone behave so utterly selfishly? Maybe it's just the cyclists where I live that have exceptionally poor manners. I hope it is, but reading some of these comments I'm not so sure.

Yes, there are certainly some selfish people around aren't they? I gave up using the cycle lane near us as 9 times out of 10, a car would be parked on it, meaning I'd have to try and pull out into the moving traffic.

Far safer for all if I just used the road, rather than the cycle route.

I'm not saying the cyclist in you example was right (that was a pretty selfish thing to do), rather just pointing out that it's PEOPLE who are selfish, not just cyclists.

Stellaris22 · 18/03/2021 18:04

YANBU. When I cycled at uni a friend said they cycled through red lights as they thought it was safer, which I thought was ridiculous.

I don't drive and I walk everywhere, but pedestrians can be a lot worse. I regularly see people walk across a road without looking or not be bothered to walk the few metres it takes to reach a pedestrian crossing.

nocoolnamesleft · 18/03/2021 18:09

I once got knocked over by a cyclist on a pavement. He wanted to know why I didn't jump out of the way. He came from behind. And I use a walking aid.

Cyclists want to use cycle lanes, but usually they’re badly planned which means they stop at random, don’t connect to each other, have vehicles parked in them, or have drains in them which can be dangerous to cycle over when it’s wet or icy - I have come off my bike before when skidding over a drain cover. Yes, it sounds like that guy was a knob (I hate being trailed by a car especially for any length of time) but he probably didn’t want to be breathing in your fumes from behind. Ironically you are criticising cyclists for expecting pedestrians to move out of the way when you expect them to move out of the way for you. How is it different just because you’re in a car?
CuthbertDibbleandGrubb · 18/03/2021 18:15

Let him or her who is without fault on the road cast the first stone. All these threads seem to me are having a go at cyclists, some of whom are bad but overwhelmingly outnumbered by bad motorists. In my view at least 25% of those with a driving licence should not have one, and I would not sat 25% of those who cycle should not be allowed to.
