So worried about what the dentist will think next month!

My son hasn’t been to the dentist in over a year because of lockdown. He is finally getting an appointment next month as there is a huge backlog, but I am so worried about what the dentist will say! He is autistic and brushing his teeth was extremely hard, and he had yellow tartar along the bottom of his front 4 due to insufficient cleaning. I thought I had been doing a good job considering the fight he put up but obviously not! He now lets me clean them, but I fear damage has been done. He lost his first baby tooth and I thought great, il just make sure I take really good care of his new ones now, but the more it’s growing the more I’m noticing it’s very very yellow in colour! I am devastated! I’m really hoping I haven’t scrubbed so hard I’ve removed his enamel! I am pretty strict about his diet and rarely allow sweets, but the one downfall is orange squash. He point blank refuses to drink milk or water, hates it and gags, so I have no choice but to give him squash as I can’t allow him to get dehydrated. But fizzy drinks are an absolute no no and he’s never even tried them! I’m just so scared the dentist is going to think his teeth are very poorly cared for when we really have tried hard? Anyone experienced anything similar! Advice very welcome xx

I know when my foster kids’ first baby teeth fell out and the big ones grew in I did mention to the dentist I was a bit concerned they were more yellow than the baby ones. She said big teeth are naturally not as white as baby teeth and it’s more noticeable when they still have other baby teeth in their mouth but was totally normal and nothing to worry about. Now that they have lost just about all the baby ones it’s not as noticeable.

Your dentist will almost certainly just be pleased to see you. Try not to worry. Flowers

Please don't worry - the dentist is here to help you. He / she's seen it all before. Sounds like you're doing a great job with your little one.

Any good dentist will recognise the struggle that parents of children with autism face. They don't judge a bit of calculus.

The adult teeth always look more yellow, that's completely normal.

You've nothing to worry about. Dentists see countless sets of teeth, in all sorts of conditions, and they're certainly not interested in judging anyone.
