Doesn’t like any vegetables at all?
I was just watching a video about a man who wanted to find recipes he could eat that don’t contain vegetables as he doesn’t like any veg.

I mean come on.. there’s as many flavours in different vegetables as there are colours in the world.. yet he would proclaim to ‘hate all colours’

I just don’t get it. Kids I sort of understand; especially when they descend from fussy parents. But I just think ‘grow up’ when I read about adults not touching vegetables. I’m not talking about “I don’t like broccoli or carrots” - won’t eat vegetables at all.

And the “salad? Do I look like a rabbit?” Slur that comes from people

Who won’t eat anything remotely green or healthy, that saying really boils my piss. Just say no thank you?!

I know IABU as it’s none of my business but it just made me roll my eyes and would be interested to hear others opinions on it.

My ex hates all vegetables and refuses to eat them which has in turn made my older children more fussy with their vegetables because they saw their dad turn his nose up at the vegetables I would serve whem I cooked. The worst part is my ex was a trained chef. I adore all vegetables that I have tried so far and I am always open to trying ones I haven't before, my husband loves his vegetables too.

LifesTooShortForYourNonsense · 19/03/2021 17:32

When I was in hospital with my DC I loved the food - it was all bakes, cottage pie and veg, fruit crumbles etc- real family favourite stuff. So many new mums standing there saying ‘but I don’t like veg, and I don’t eat fish, and I only eat pasta’. Grown adults being picky over nice, free food. Confused

I was surprised, but they gave me double portions of some things Smile

GrandTheftWalrus · 19/03/2021 17:36

I'm only picky or fussy about curry/spicy foods. At work last year we were getting meals provided and lots were curry and rice, I can't eat too spicy as it sets off my ibs but that's the only thing.

Babysharkdoodoodood · 19/03/2021 17:39

Oh god. Yes. The sheer damned fussiness. My eldest ds is not nt and he went through a phase of only orange/yellow food. Now he's grown up he likes to experiment. Even had roast broccoli & garlic the other day.

Ds2 will not eat more than a spoonful of anything green unless it's asparagus and hates pepper. However he loves fruit so balances it out.

DH whinges if there's no broccoli. Hates asparagus and anything vaguely weird like artichoke.

And I'll vacuum anything off the plate. Grin

I don’t like vegetables, as a child we had home cooked food all the time and I ate it all including veggies, then I stayed with a relative who forced me to eat all the food on my plate ( an adult serving ) I was a 6 yr old child, I was upset and crying, I ended up choking on a vegetable and threw up, since then I haven’t been able to tolerate vegetables even when hidden in the food, I would gag and throw up, I know it is psychological and have tried many times to eat them but as close as I get to eating them is onion powder, my children still eat all the vegetables I serve them except carrots as my daughter has an allergy ( confirmed by GP), so I never judge what someone does or doesn’t eat.

I dislike veg. I eat because I know I should, some I tolerate more than others, but there are none I'd say I actually like.

I was brought up eating lots of veg and with a vegan parent. I didn't like it then, but it was a case of eat it or starve.

ivykaty44 · 19/03/2021 17:55

tabu

and I would have thought the same until very recently when it was explained that there is a reason that vegetables taste sour to some people.

There is not much I won't eat or try and I have even changed my taste to like some foods, goats cheese and. swede being two

there is also a reason for some people not to like cilantro - it taste soapy to them, its a gene and its why it taste like soap to many people

I love vegetables and fruit, unfortunately I have problems with most fruit, especially apples my favourite. I've met people who dont eat any veg or won't entertain the idea of just eating something because its healthy ie egg white. I will try any bloody thing, why the hell not. I've come across some wierd and wonderfull flavours, that I thought would be gross but i was pleasantly surprised. Just saying I've also tried some stuff that under no circumstances I'd try again. Apparently if you try something ten times you can grow to like. Health is more important than you could ever comprehend, only when it's gone do you realise just how much. So please just eat your greens.

SheilaWilcox · 19/03/2021 18:01

So much judgement on here.

I don't eat fruit or veg (actually, I've discovered I can eat frozen raspberries as the texture is bearable.)

I don't know where it stems from. possibly being forced to eat it at home. having to stay at the table until I tried everything then vomiting afterwards.

Since moving out 25+ years ago, I've tried to find things I can eat. I buy different things from the supermarket to see if I can find something I like. Sometimes it's the texture I don't like - as I love fruit juices, but can't sink my teeth into an apple or orange. Sometimes it's the flavour.
I happily prepare veg for my husband and family and quite often love the smell when prepping. I've managed to liquidise some things and have them as soups.

It's not by (conscious) choice. It's horrible to go somewhere and be hungry because there's nothing you can make yourself eat. Work buffets always putting tomatoes, cucumber, lettuce in sandwiches, restaurants with limited menus so you avoid going out.

I've seriously considered trying a hypnotist as I'd love to eat fruit and veg.

I'm so embarrassed of my food 'quirk.' This thread shows I'm right to be as the contempt shown towards people like me is horrible.

Clumsyvolcano · 19/03/2021 18:01

I know a couple of people like this, not many but you’re right OP, I think the exact same as you, very childish to me unless they have some sort of sensory issue.

What I really don’t understand is, how can someone go that long without eating fruit and veg? Their nutrition must be atrocious.

If I go a few days without fruit or veg I feel like my body craves it as if I’m in need of the nutrients. It’s madness how adults don’t like any, it smacks of a fussy, spoiled child. Hmm

Bekstar · 19/03/2021 18:02

Sorry but as an autistic adult who is married to another autistic adult I totally understand this. My husband won't eat a single veg. Even if I try to hide it in things like hidden veg Mac and cheese. He still notices and won't eat it. He is very limited to what he eats, literally it has to be meat based and processed at that.

Dinkydody · 19/03/2021 18:03

@Sixdegreesofseparation

Boils my piss has to be one of the ugliest terms you could choose to use Hmm just sayin

kowari · 19/03/2021 18:03

I think you could get by on fruit like peppers, tomatoes, cucumbers, butternut squash and so on and be healthier than an adult who eats vegetables but in practice doesn't get even 5 a day.

Suja1 · 19/03/2021 18:08

Sadly, some people with autism have sensory problems with fruit and veg. Wet and slimy, apparently. It's difficult to change that, I'm afraid.

Snaketime · 19/03/2021 18:11

Well as someone who doesn't like any fruit or veg at all because the texture makes me physically sick (I have tried all of them more than once) YABVU and judgey. I honestly hate people like you, it sucks being this way as it is, maybe try being a little understanding instead of a bully.
Oh and just because I am fussy doesnt mean my kids are, both of my kids love fruit and veg.

Thisistherhythmofthenight · 19/03/2021 18:15

No I agree with you OP. Can't be doing with people who have the taste buds of a child lol.

BoomBoomsCousin · 19/03/2021 18:15

@ClearMountain

The mistake is thinking you have to like vegetables to eat them. You’re an adult, you should be able to take your medicine even if it’s not very nice. I dislike most veg but I force them down for health reasons.
^^ this.

Not eating them for fun when you don't like them is more than reasonable. But as an adult you should be consuming them anyway because your body needs them.

Does it help to make soup and blitz it to death?

Not liking the texture of any fruit or vegetables at all is usually indicative of something else going on. Have you explored why this is?

honeybee88 · 19/03/2021 18:24

Hahaha...he is a man! How did I guess.....big baby!

Feefsie · 19/03/2021 18:26

I had an extremely varied diet as a child. My family were keen gardeners so we had kale, broccoli, cabbage, runner beans, kidney beans, tomatoes, strawberries, rhubarb, carrots, turnip etc. . We used to pick blackberries and billberries and make jam and crumble. My mum thought nice tasting fruit like grapes and melon weren’t as good for you.
She is a very good cook and was way ahead of her time. Everything was cooked al dente without salt in the water. We also ate liver, fish, cheap cuts of meat slow cooked. She also made a pudding everyday like treacle sponge or rice pudding. . I absolutely love food and can’t really think of any fruit, veg or salad that I don’t like. My kids were weaned on a wide variety of foods and tried everything including spinach and avocado. They are both excellent eaters sometimes we have salad and sometimes we have takeaway and cake. No food is off limits.

mbosnz · 19/03/2021 18:32

Tormenting, torturing, and abusing children by force feeding them, serving them up food again and again, until the poor child eats it, or the parent caves in and then nags at the child for being so naughty, is effing appalling. I worked with a woman who very proudly used these tactics. I tried, and tried, to get her to see the error of her ways, and that this was why her children were so food resistant, but nope. Then she described the slop she was feeding them in the name of good nutritious home cooking. I'd have rather starved than eat that crap myself.

I get impatient with performative non eating of veges, as others have said, the gagging, the proud recitation of what a person won't eat, when a guest - after the damned meal has been cooked, lol.

People not wanting to eat vege and quietly leaving what they don't want to eat on their plate - absolutely no problem. That is their right and choice, whether they are 6, 16 and 60. My piss is boiling at the bully adult above forcing a 6 year old child in such a way - not least, because I can remember the same sort of bullying as a 7 year old when I'd been farmed out to the neighbour yet again, and couldn't eat peas.

Shell4429 · 19/03/2021 18:35

People on the autistic spectrum often don’t eat fruit or veg. My son is 29 now and still doesn’t.
