AIBU to be hacked off at delay in holiday request being approved?

I requested annual leave nearly two weeks ago; I had to cancel the request and change the dates at the weekend because the place I wanted to go is now booked.
Line manager has acknowledged during a team meeting that she's seen the requests and she "will get round to it".
I understand that approving leave is not her top priority, but there's only two employed people in the team FFS (the rest having got pissed off & left so replaced by temps).
What do you think is a reasonable period of time for a request to be approved or rejected?

Id say a week

I'm just being horribly impatient. I WANT TO GO AWAY ON HOLIDAY!!!
So does everyone else, which is why everything is booking up fast.

Personally if it was urgent I would call my boss and ask them to approve immediately, but less than a week is easily doable.

I normally approve requests sent to me on the same or next day

couchparsnip · 17/03/2021 17:51

I had to fill in a form for Easter leave at the end of Jan. It still hasn't been approved and we're nearly there! I agree it's frustrating.

notdaddycool · 17/03/2021 18:10

I've always done the same day, when I was planning to shop around I'd often say to a boss I'm planning second half of August, OK to book and just book it.

CatherineofOnandon · 17/03/2021 18:50

Not helpful, but, this is exactly why i spent 2 full solid yrs looking for and finally securing term time school work and then left commercial.

I used to have wait ages for
holidays approval in commercial, then for them not to be not approved. I had to pay over odds for holidays and holiday childcare as always last min , all solely dependant on work and other colleagues, who had no children! Always scrabbling for holiday childcare. Not knowing what weeks i could have off. I could not continue like that.

I have been in term time only employment for 15 yrs now. I always know i have all of August and other sch holidays. This term time holiday issue resolution has improved my quality of life totally and that of my DC's , transformed.

I think a week is long enough. I think if something such as a hotel booking is depending on it, I think that a conversation to explain why (phone call if wfh) should accompany it.

"@notdaddycool I've always done the same day, when I was planning to shop around I'd often say to a boss I'm planning second half of August, OK to book and just book it."

This is where i would come a cropper @not , i would request leave before booking anything
and way b4 anyone else but then others would book last min flights and then refuse to budge , so my leave was cancelled/screwed! Leaving me with no childcare provision .

People who book holidays before it is approved are total c**ts in my opinion!

EveryDayIsADuvetDay · 17/03/2021 19:10

wow couchparsnip - seven weeks and still waiting - I'm clearly very impatient.

I guess it's one of those WFH frustrations, if we were in the office it would be a simple conversation of "is the second week of June OK?"

I always approve my team’s leave requests the same day or next day

MatildaTheCat · 18/03/2021 11:11

If you have a specific booking for those dates I would email her and say you are sorry to pester her but you need to know please. It impacts on your whole family if others also have to request time off.

Unless your boss is absolutely frantic then making these small jobs a priority is in her interests to keep you happy. It can’t take more than a minute or two?

Shinyletsbebadguys · 18/03/2021 11:15

I would ring your boss. Things are really busy and difficult at the moment so perhaps a quick call to explain the urgency is needed.

I've been on both ends of this. In one role there was a huge incident in a service that meant for a week all three senior managers within a 200 mile radius were sequestered working 18 hour days to sort out. I had a holiday request in that time I fully admit I missed. The member of staff couldn't get anyone to approve it as the nearest senior person for non emergencies was in Scotland and understandably was worried about leaving me really short staffed without knowing my setup . Thankfully sensible staff member sent me a text explaining the urgency and asking me to sort when I could , rather than getting upset. I did it at 2am that morning all sorted , but one of my colleagues on the same incident had a complaint put in about her.

On the flipside I usually have an idea of whats going on and have just rung a manager if I needed approval quickly. Just ring and explain. Not many managers worth anything will be arsey if you explain politely.

thecatandthevicar · 18/03/2021 11:28

I do mine same day or next day.

No one is too busy to authorise a holiday request, it's just being ridiculously disorganised. It's not professional.

I'd rather do them quickly, put them in the planning so everybody else knows which day are taken and doesn't try to take same days.

But then some people moan and reject the idea to do 3 minutes overtime Hmm

I would ring my manager and explain it's urgent. Don't blame her (to her face) but be proactive.

One week is taking the piss frankly.

Graciebobcat · 18/03/2021 11:30

They should do it the same day if it's a simple request.

Bargebill19 · 18/03/2021 11:31

You think that’s bad - I’ve just left a company that’s refused all holiday since September. Several of us hadn’t had any holiday for a year. We’ve all walked out.

EveryDayIsADuvetDay · 24/03/2021 20:06

yeah, finally approved and reminding her during a 1:1 meeting.
3 weeks!
Cottage booked Grin - sure it cost £30 more than when I first shortlisted it.
