My DD (nearly 2) has a range of health problems and has always been seen quickly by the NHS. But I'm getting very on edge about her recent "problem". Hopefully someone has some advice about what to do, or can calm me down and say I am being unreasonable.

She's been having a recent serious issue, I'm reluctant to say exactly what but it's as serious as having a heart problems and is potentially life threatening. So I'll use that to explain it.

DD was seen by a pediatrician who agreed she likely had this problem, she was referred for an ECG, in her review letter it says "I will see Name in my heart clinic in march"
She had the ECG done, the doctor conducting it said from what she saw, she would expect someone to contact us within two weeks, regardless of whether that was in the heart clinic or before.

Last week was three weeks past the ECG, we had heard nothing and also don't have an appointment for the heart clinic yet. I called pediatrics, they have an answerphone only system (I know this from past appointments) so I left them a message. But we're still waiting.

I'm torn between, this is my daughter who's life could be at risk, Surely they should have called back and explained when we'll be seen?!
And, they said march, it's still march, maybe the letter is in the post now.

Dp and other family members however, are furious that she is "being ignored".

Has anyone got some experience and knows if -

  • YABU - it's not even the end of march yet
  • YANBU - you should have at least had an appointment letter by now.

Call the hospital and ask to be put through to the secretary of the Paediatrician you saw. No one will mind you checking the information you have been given and they should be able to tell you if and where you are in the system. Hopefully this will reassure you.

ItsTheKissing · 16/03/2021 14:27

Oh sorry......
YANBU to check the process is in place given the information you were told by the paediatrician.

Another vote for calling the hospital switchboard and asking for the “paediatric secretaries” and if they ask which paediatrician tell them his name.

I imagine this is part of the huge Covid related back log that the NHS are dealing with at the moment. Obviously that doesn't help alleviate your very natural, worry at all. I'd chase it up through the secretary as PP suggested, or PALS might be able to help.

NormanStangerson · 16/03/2021 14:33

Agree with calling the switchboard and requesting the consultant paeds’ secretary. Could just be her ECG was so normal they’re not that worried and therefore not acting quickly. Meanwhile however you’re going out of your mind with worry, so I’d give them a call now.

Speak with the consultants secretary as per other posters.
I work in a surgery and we often have people calling us asking about hospital appointments which are out of our control but we always advise them to call the consultant/doctors secretary. Good luck x

Thank you all, I think I have the secretary's number somewhere. I'll dig it out and give them a call.
